Opis:
Seed orchards are expected to produce geneticaly improved seeds while maintaining a sufficiently large genetic diversity. Field trials comparing open-pollinated Scots pine progeny from seed orchards and commercial seed stands were established at five climaticaly different sites in Poland. The paper presents first height measurements obtained on trees at age 4. Seedlots differed significantly, but there was no strong evidence of better performance of clonal seed orchards progeny over the progeny of production seed stands. There was no distinct geographical trend in the origin of the best growing seedlots, but populations from the northern part of country tend to perform better than south-eastern ones. Progeny of the local production seed stands at their native environment were not the best, except in one case. A strong site effect reflecting a fertility gradient of the planting sites was found.

Opis:
The paper shows differences in morphological and anatomical features of the Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) growing on former agricultural and forest lands. It was found that at the same age and in the same climatic conditions Scots pines from former agricultural land had larger stem dimensions and needle sizes as compared with the trees growing on forest land. These results lead to an interesting conclusion connected with future afforestation and reforestiation in the Krynki Forest District.

Opis:
Decrease in emission of harmful gases and dusts in industrialised regions of Poland triggered improvement of forest health. Results of research dealing with pine stands in the Olkusz Forest District prove that. It was shown that number of side shoots growing out in the whorl rose up to 4−5. Trees developed height increment over two times higher than the model one and as a result height growth rate increased. Examined stands moved to the higher site index class during last 25 years. The need of further research on growth processes of trees being under anthropogenic influence was emphasised.

Opis:
The paper analyses the height growth and the of height increment of the 18 year−old pine advance regeneration under the shelter of varying canopy densities. A significant effect was found of the stocking of the parental stand on the growth of generation. The height increment increased in response to removal cutting (60% in the second year and 80% in the third year after treatment). In drought years, the greatest relative decrease in height growth of the young−growth stands (by ca 40−60%) occurred in the stands of the greatest canopy closure while it did not occur in the stands to which a removal cutting was applied immediately before the drought year.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to develop a site index model for Scots pine stands in southern Poland describing changes in height growth of stand's upper storey over time. The research material contained the height growth data obtained from an analysis of 189 tree stems. The collected material was used to develop the parameters of six dynamic growth equations which allowed to determine site productivity and predict changes in height growth of stands with age. Statistical criteria for assessing the accuracy of mapping empirical data and biological reasonableness were the basis of selection of the equation that best fits changes in height growth of the examined pine stands with age. The developed model can be used to predict the growth rate and determine the site index for Scots pine stands in southern Poland.

Opis:
The study presents the results of an analysis of the pine tree growth increments (height increment, dbh increment, basal area increment and volume increment) for a 5-year period. The study involved Scots pine trees of Kraft's class 1, 2 and 3 (dominant stand) in stands of different age classes (II, III, V) growing in fresh mixed coniferous (BMoew) and fresh coniferous (Boew) forest habitats. The multivariate analysis of variance was performed to assess the statistical significance of age and dominance of trees within a stand on their increment. The dominance position was classified for each tree using Kraft's criteria. The following characteristics were also measured: dbh of the trunk in two directions (N-S and W-E), and crown projection area on the basis of the characteristic tree crown points, projected using of a crown projector, characteristic points in tree crowns (7 to 14 on average). The actual height was determined after trees were felled. The following measurements of the single tree growing space were selected and determined: crown projection area – pk (m2), crown diameter – dk (m), Seebach's growth space number – dk / d1. 3 , crown projection area to basal area ratio –d d k 2 1 3 / 2. , crown deflection coefficient –d h k / , single tree space ppd=pk·h (m3). We assessed the strength of the relationships between tree growth parameters and tree growth space, crown length, relative crown length and slenderness. Both the age and dominance position of trees within the stand affected the growth increments. The strongest correlation among measured traits was between the 5-year volume increment and decreasing slenderness.

Opis:
The paper was aimed at determination of the effect of different tree density in the naturally regenerated monotypic and even aged young Scots pine stands growing in the fresh coniferous or mixed fresh coniferous forest sites on their further development. Research was carried out in Nowa Dęba Forest District (south−eastern Poland). A total of 12 research plots (160×40 m) were established in the selected stands. Plots were divided into 4 equal square pieces (40×40 m), where different methods of tending were applied (variant A – control, variant B – thinned, leaving 16 thousand trees/ha, variant C – thinned, leaving 10 thousand trees/ha, variant D – thinned, leaving 6 thousand trees/ha). The thinning was carried out in April 2007. In subsequent years (2007−2010), selected elements of stand structure like: height, height increment, density and damage resulting from abiotic and biotic factors were determined. Tree density significantly influenced both height increment and qualitative (tree shape) characteristics of naturally regenerated young pine trees. In the course of early thinnings, the number of trees needs to be reduced approximately down to the 10−16 th. stems/ha in the first stage of growth (seedlings), and further down to about 6 th./ha in the coppice stage. Such density enhances the chance of good growth and silvicultural quality of the stand. Noteworthy, even the heavy thinning does not significantly impact the actual proportion of both biotic (e.g. ungulate browsing) and abiotic (e.g. heavy snow) damage in the young naturally regenerated Scots pine forest stands.
