Opis:
In this study, an Estonian tree-ring network of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) H.Karst.), originating from both living trees and dead wood of construction wood, was used for determining the growth variations over the past 350 years (AD 1657–2009). Regional curve standardization was used to remove the non-climatic growth variations from the individual tree-ring series prior to dendroclimatic analyses to focus on the low-frequency (long-term and -period) growth variations. Previously, the chronology has been shown to correlate markedly well with Estonian precipitation history. Here we further detail this dendroclimatic connection. Correlations between the Estonian precipitation and treerings improved systematically with both the number of meteorological stations included and with the documented technical advances in the network of instrumental weather observations. The observed June precipiation explains roughly 20 percent of the tree-ring variance over the period when the network of weather observations is densest (1946–2009). On decadal and longer scales, the June precipitation explains higher portion of tree-ring variance, roughly 50 percent, over the full instrumental era (1866–2009). Comparison with previously published and similarly standardized tree-ring chronology from south-eastern Finland, based on Scots pine tree-rings, showed that the two chronologies exhibit several coinciding periods of ameliorated and deteriorated growth.

Opis:
The aims of the study were to determine the effect of temperatures and precipitation on the ring width and to compare the results with the results of previous studies conducted in other mountain ranges of the Czech Republic. The research was performed in the central part of the Ceskomoravská Upland in the vicinity of Herálec municipality in selected 70- up to 110-year-old spruce stands at altitudes from 680ma.s.l. to 779 m a.s.l. Measuring of tree-ring widths and synchronization of individual ring series were conducted in PAST4. The age trend was removed by ARSTAN and climatic effects were modelled in DendroClim2002. The correlation of tree-ring width with monthly precipitation is positive and statistically significant for July of the previous year and for the entire summer period from June to September of the current year. The correlation of tree-ring width with mean monthly temperatures is negative and statistically significant for July and September and positive and statistically significant for October of the previous year. Negative correlation was also found for temperatures of the entire summer period from June to September of the previous year. The regional tree-ring chronology mainly shows two periods of highly reduced increment: from 1992 to 1996 and from 2003 to the end of the analysed period. The results thus confirm the hypothesis that the tree-ring width is in positive correlation with summer precipitation and negative correlation with summer temperatures. Also the results of the habitual diagnostics have shown a relatively low degree of crown transformation which indicates a weak or short-term stress load.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to investigate differences in radial increment reaction of Norway spruces from the Beskidy Zachodnie Mountains (S Poland). Spruce stands were located at different altitudes and slope aspect. Two altitudinal zones were distinguished by a separating altitude of 900 m a.s.l. The dendrochronological belts, consistent in terms of radial increment, amount to 200−250 m in the lower zone, and narrow down to ca. 100 m in the upper one. Factor differentiating radial increment of spruces at various altitudes was temperature in September of previous year as well as precipitation in March and June of current year.

Opis:
The study analysed short−term rhythm of radial increments of spruces from different elevations and their climate drivers. Two Norway spruce stands were chosen at the lower and upper montane forest belt in Roztoka Valley (DR) (1000−1050 m asl, 49°13 N, 20°04 E) and in Hala Gąsienicowa (HG) (1500−1550 m asl, 49°13 N, 20°04 E). 20 trees were sampled and one increment core was taken per tree. The sampled trees were dominant or co−dominant individuals without visible damage. To remove the age trend, the tree−ring widths values were standardized to annual sensitivity indices. Principal components analysis, bootstrapped correlation and pointer years analysis were used to classify sensitivity of investigated series and identify the climate factors, which determined annual variability of the radial increments. Pointer years were also determined by using interval trend method. The first principal component (PC1) accounts for 39% of the variance among all tree−ring series. The second component (PC2) accounts for 15% of the variance among the tree−ring series and divides the series into two groups. This grouping seems to express the lower and higher locations of the sites. The sensitivity series of spruces from both sites had different as well as similar features. These differences resulted from different tree's reaction to temperature in early spring and precipitation in spring and summer. The similarity of increment reactions of spruce from both sites was caused by their similar sensitivity to sunshine duration and precipitation in January, temperature in June and July, sunshine duration in June. Cluster analysis confirmed the impact of the climatic factors on differences of increment reactions of spruces. A number of the pointer years was higher at site located in the upper montane forest belt. Their chronology also consisted a stronger climatic signal. The climatic sensitivity which was specificity for a given climatic belt was recorded into individual tree series. For that reason, the tree−ring width series of trees are useful in the estimate of a climate−increment relationship. They can also be used to dividing dendroclimatic belts.

A local tree ring chronology for Norway spruce from the Ormtjernkampen National Park in Norway has been developed for the years 1808−1996. The widths of annual tree rings are shown as absolute [mm] and standardised values. The dendroclimatic analyses have demonstrated that high June−July air temperatures and atmospheric precipitation in January have a stimulatory effect on ring formation. The high air temperatures of April in the current year and of June and September in the year prior to ring formation have a limiting effect on radial increment.

Opis:
The paper compares the properties of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) wood from stands growing in the lower and upper subalpine forest zone in terms of the tree−ring width, the share of latewood and the wood density. The investigation concerned material originating from plots established within the boundaries of the south−western incidence of spruce in Poland. Plots were located in the Sudety Mts. and in the Carpathians (tab. 1). On each plot fifteen Norway spruces were chosen and increment cores were sampled using the Pressler borer. The surface of the cores was smoothed and the tree−ring width was measured. The latewood zones were determined and the share of latewood was calculated. Then, the cores were divided into 2 cm sections, for which the relative wood density was determined. Tree−rings were wider in trees growing in the lower when compared with those from the upper subalpine forest zone (tab. 2). Weak negative correlation was revealed between the elevation and the tree−ring width (r=–0.308). The latewood share was slightly higher in trees from the upper than those from the lower subalpine forest zone (tab. 2). However, no statistically significant correlation between the latewood share and elevation was recorded. The wood density was slightly lower in trees from the lower than those from the upper subalpine forest zone (tab. 2), but the difference was not statistically significant. The correlation between the wood density and the elevation turned out to be insignificant.

Opis:
Content fluctuations of the oxygen isotope δ18O in the Devon Island ice core during the last 100 000 years are a measure of climate fluctuations in the Northern Hemisphere. The course of content of the oxygen isotope δ18O and the sums of solar radiation reaching the upper edge of the atmosphere are characterized by approximate minima and maxima (by positive correlation). This proves that, during the last hundred thousand years, climate fluctuations (cooling and warming) in the Northern Hemisphere were conditioned by long-term changes of the orbit and altitude of the Earth's axis. Climate fluctuation forecasts for the Northern Hemisphere were developed for the next 40 000 years on the basis of the established periods of change of the oxygen isotope δ18O and the known solar radiation periodicity. Climate changes in Europe during the last 25000 years were presented together with a forecast for 1000 years (according to organic substances in deposits and radiation) as well as climate changes in Europe in the period from -500 years BP to 2100 AD (according to δ18O and pine tree-rings). It showed that climate changes depended on the concentration of planet mass in relation to the ecliptic plane (from the gravitational impact of planets on the Sun). Concentration courses of planet mass in the Solar System and climate fluctuations in the Northern Hemisphere were compared. Of interest are examples of synchronic fluctuations, i.e. dispersal of planet mass in the Solar System, the widths of pine and spruce tree rings and air temperatures in Europe.
