    The paper presents the calculations of the Management Difficulty Index (STG) for forest ranges in the State Forests. The calculations were made on the basis of the characteristics of the management conditions and the scope of tasks for all forest ranges in the country in 2009. The usefulness of the STG index was proven in the management practice of the State Forests.

    Opis:
    The purpose of this study was to analyze the profitability of the State Forests by using accounting measures and to determine their practical applicability for evaluating the State Forests’ activities covering the years 2008 – 2012. In our assessment, we used the ratios: return on assets, return on equity and return on sales, which were calculated for the four following levels of financial result: operating result and economic activity result, gross profit and net profit. The degree of variability of the analyzed ratios was determined for the years 2008–2012. On the basis of our survey, the State Forests’ activities were found to be profitable. The ratios return on assets, sales and equity show only slight variation depending on the applied category of financial results. Furthermore, this study confirms that there is a high degree of variation over time. In the years 2008–2012, the profitability ranged from 2% to 13% with the highest profit having been reached in 2011. We conclude that for the State Forests’ activity assessment, the profitability ratios established for the category of operating results will be of great significance.

    The paper presents the method of determining the management difficulty index for forest ranges of the State Forests To assess the management difficulty level, a set of 16 sub−indices was developed characterizing terrain obstacles, the structure of and threat to forest resources, as well as the extent of management tasks. The annual work time structure of range forest managers was a basis for the point rating of individual sub−indices. The usefulness of the method was proven in the management practice of the State Forests.

    Opis:
    Podjęta w 2006 i 2007 r. akcja inwentaryzacji przyrodniczej w Lasach Państwowych objęła gatunki roślin i zwierząt oraz siedliska przyrodnicze wymienione w dyrektywach Unii Europejskiej – ptasiej i siedliskowej. Skierowała ona uwagę pracowników nadleśnictw na sprawy dotychczas leżące na marginesie ich pracy zawodowej: ekologiczną typologię ekosystemów leśnych, różnorodność biologiczną wychodzącą poza rośliny drzewiaste i zwierzęta łowne oraz wywołujące szkody w lesie, wreszcie międzynarodowe znaczenie przyrodniczych składników w gospodarce leśnej. Oceniając pozytywnie tę akcję autor wnosi kilka uwag do metodyki i zakresu inwentaryzacji, podejmuje problem naturalności i antropogenicznych zniekształceń ekosystemów leśnych, zwraca uwagę na rolę rezerwatów leśnych jako wzorców typów tych ekosystemów, a także na potrzebę ściślejszej współpracy leśnictwa z przyrodnikami – naukowcami.
    Undertaken in 2006 and 2007 r. inventory of nature in state forests covered the species of plants and animals and habitats mentioned in EU directives – birds and habitats. It focused the attention of forest inspectorates’ personnel on matters being so far on the margins of professional work: ecological typology of forest ecosystems biodiversity extending the trees and game, and, as last, international meaning of natural elements in forest industry. Positively evaluating the whole action, the author makes several remarks to the methodology and scope of inventory, discusses the problem of naturalness and anthropogenic distortions of forest ecosystems, draws attention to the role of forest reserves as patterns for types of such ecosystems and to the need of closed cooperation of forest inspectorates with naturalists – scientists.
