Opis:
Scientific research on the Palm Sunday procession, specifically focusing on the characteristic chants used therein, began in Poland only in the 20th century. After the Second Vatican Council not only were there changes to the procession rite, but there were also far-reaching reductions in the former repertoire of chants. Polish church hymnals of the post-Council period are rather varied, de-pending on the hymnal editor’s vision. In the repertoire of ten hymnals researched and analyzed for this paper, only two chants can be found in common. Both are translations from Latin. Altogether, in the presented hymnal editions we find as many as twenty-four different chants. Polish editions contain many more chants than hymnals from other European countries.

Paschal Mystery
Opis:
The analysis of euchological texts drawn from two different liturgical celebrations, namely the Palm Sunday and the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, focuses the theological thought on Christ’s passion, death and resurrection. The fundamental fruit of this Paschal Mystery is the eternal life for every believer. A spectrum of every euchology is related to eschatological thought for the great number of texts from the currently used Roman Missal refer to the eternal life with God. Although these two celebrations share common theology and reveal the truth about redemption of human soul from sin and damnation, they differ from each other in totally different moments of their celebration as well as circumstances when they were introduced to the Liturgical Calendar. Nevertheless, the role of those texts is to reveal the unquestionable truth: Christ’s Cross is the altar, on which Christ, being obedient to his Father’s will, sacrificed himself for our sins. All these thoughts lead to one common aim – the eternal life with God. The liturgical reform of the Second Vatican Council assumes a return to original texts which were used to celebrate the Eucharist. Therefore, the analysis presents the juxtaposition of the current euchologies and the oldest Roman sacramentaries: Gelasianum and Gregorianum-Hadrianum which are juxtaposed with the Missal of St. Pius V and the Latin-Polish Missal, in which some modifications can be observed as well as differences in the selection of the Eucharistic texts.

Opis:
Human time, no matter to what culture or religion a man belongs, is filled with celebrations that give rhythm to his life and help him capture the essence of his existence. Also Christianity over the centuries worked out various forms of specific celebration. The goal of this text is to look at the character of celebrate in the fourth and fifth centuries and to determine how the Christian writers wrote about the celebration. The first sources that author considered are two ancient texts of Socrates of Constantinople (Socrates Scholasticus) and Sozomen (Salminius Hermias Sozomenus) with the same names: Historia Ecclesiastica. In both works there are little chapters, in which appear the mention of the celebration, the majority of them is associated with Feast of the Passover and The First Council of Nicaea, others occur mainly on the margins of the narrative. This is because the history of the Church is here treated primarily as ‘political’ history, shaped by the decisions of great personages of the Church. The most important conclusion that emerges from these two texts is the observation that the differences in the way of celebration are not a source of division, but most of all divisions for doctrinal reasons manifest themselves in a separate celebration. The second source is The Travels of Egeria, also called The Pilgrimage of Aetheria (Itinerarium Egeriae), a letter describing the author’s travel to the holy places. In her report Egeria devotes much attention to the description of those involved in the celebration of subsequent festivals. The modern reader is struck by the generosity of crowds gathered in prayer and their vivid faith that motivates them to make long prayers going for hours. Celebration of Christians in the fourth and fifth centuries was an expression of a vivid faith. Their religion permeated life in all dimensions, and determined the essence of who they were. It was touching the inexpressible, the main aim was above all communion with Christ and the Church. Originally Christians celebrated entirely in the community of the Church, which gives a more or less clear framework to all that can be considered for celebration.
