Opis:
The point of departure for the article are Cyprian Norwid’s words quoted in the Krakow daily “Kraj” in January 1872. They were used in the review of the anonymous poem Niewolnik, in which the emigration poet is shown in the role of an authority deciding about the proper approach to poetical testimonies to struggle for freedom. Norwid’s oral opinion used by the reviewer is concerned with another, also anonymous poem. The reviewer remains anonymous as well. In his analysis of the newspaper publication and of the circumstances accompanying it Okulicz-Kozaryn clarifies these unknown issues: he identifies the authors of both poems as well as of the review, at the same time finding out that Norwid’s words are a different, richer version of the poet’s dictum recorded briefly in another place.

Opis:
The article is concerned with Norwid’s critical opinions connected with the January Uprising. The period preceding it, abounding in great patriotic-religious demonstrations in Warsaw, was considered by the poet as a very positive and by all means original one. On the other hand, he thought that the very uprising and its course was a secondary act, devoid of logic and aim. The author of Fulminant repeated his judgments, sometimes harsh ones, in the memorials, letters and poetical works that he wrote at that time. His critical opinions of the low level of the insurrectionist press, or the unwilling participation of the Polish intelligentsia in the insurrectionist actions, were not always just and true. In many cases Norwid simply did not accept historical facts. Maybe it was his personal traumas of an underestimated, or even rejected poet, that were voiced in this way. The attitude of a prophet shouting in the wilderness was a temptation that was difficult to resist. The awareness of his own mission, the imperative that he should proclaim the truth, encouraged Norwid to assume uncompromising stances. He tried to render the position of alienation, or even of rejection by referring to Sophocles’  legendary figure, Philoctetes, bit by a venomous snake and left by the Greeks on the island of Lemnos. The writer’s numerous press articles written in the period of the Uprising will be those magic, but unable to reach the target, arrows shot by Philoctetes.

Opis:
The January Uprising was for Norwid – along with the Revolutions of 1848 (the Spring of Nations) – a sequence of historical events forming his view on politics and history. The poet’s attitude towards the last Polish insurrection in the 19th century reconstructed by researchers (Adam Krechowiecki, Wiktor Weintraub, Zofia Stefanowska, Jacek Trznadel) is full of contradictions. The article poses the question about their sources. Analysis of Norwid’s poems, letters, as well as of memorials, calendars and articles written by the above mentioned historians of literature, leads to the conclusion that the discrepancies between the interpreters’ opinions result from three factors: the changing attitude of the poet towards the events of 1861-1864 (from enthusiastic support of the Warsaw manifestations preceding the Uprising to growing doubts that were concerned with the way of conducting the struggle and the insurgents’ moral grounds); the writers’ attitude towards the subject, that was determined by the particular historical moment, in which they took up the issue; and thirdly – from the Norwidian concept of historical time.

Opis:
The text is a review of the book entitled Poeta i myśliciel. Rozprawy i szkice o Norwidzie (A Poet and a Thinker. Studies and Sketches on Norwid) published in 2013. The book was prepared in the Center for Studies of Cyprian Norwid’s Work of the Catholic University of Lublin as the 17th item in the series “Studia i monografie” (“Studies and monographs”); it contains 13 texts written by Tadeusz Makowiecki who lived in the years 1900-1952, concerning the issues connected with the person of Norwid, with his work and its reception. The studies and sketches contained in the book were published in the years 1926-1952, but until now they were scattered in various publications. The material was collected and edited by Edyta Chlebowska and Włodzimierz Toruń. Among Makowiecki’s works published in the book texts are found with a critical character: a review of Zofia Szmydtowa’s publication Norwid wobec tradycji literackiej; an opinion about reception of the poet’s works – Z batalii o Norwida; short sketches touching the poet’s biography: T.T. Jeż a Norwid, in which the author investigated may be the first case of the poet’s life influencing literature; and Z lat szkolnych Cypriana Norwida; Makowiecki’s doctoral thesis Młodzieńcze poglądy Norwida na sztukę; articles bringing up the questions connected with the poet’s social-political views: Norwid wobec powstania styczniowego, Norwid a rok 1848; a synthetic disquisition Norwid myśliciel; the text Stygmat ruin w twórczości Norwida, referring mainly to some aspects connected with the presence of ancient motifs in the poet’s works; and finally studies containing interpretations of particular poems: “Promethidion Norwida a “Dworzanin” Górnickiego, Promethidion, Za kulisami “Tyrteja” (together with Irena Sławińska) and Fortepian Szopena. Makowiecki’s “Norwidian” works were read and appreciated even earlier, among others by Konrad Górski and Marek Buś. Despite the flow of time a considerable number of the Norwidist’s observation have not become out of date.
