The article attempts to present in a synthetic way (also in the axiological aspect) the editorial work of Juliusz Wiktor Gomulicki. The editions of Norwid’s ouvre prepared by Gomulicki, especially the first complete edition of the poet’s writings, were published mainly in the years 1944–1989. Undoubtedly, Gomulicki’s greatest editorial success was the full coverage of Norwid’s writings. However, there were also some flaws, such as the excessive “biographisation” of his editorial commentaries, erroneous readings and peculiar, in the literary sense, interpretations. Furthermore, Gomulicki marginalised Norwid’s activity in the area of plastic arts (cf. his lithograph Solo). Also his genological classifications and categorisations, which had a great influence on the layout and form of the corpus of Norwid’s writings, raise some serious doubts. Finally, it is also impossible to recognize the critical and scientific character of this publishing endeavour, which Gomulicki willingly and constantly stressed.

This paper discusses the history of the first critical edition of the Hildebrandslied. The sole extant version of the famous Old High German epic, preserved only in fragments, was copied on the first and the last page of a codex dated to the 8th/9th c. and written in Fulda. The first scholarly edition of the Hildebrandslied was published in 1812 by the Grimm brothers who were also the first to recognize the poem’s alliterative verse form.

Opis:
The present paper contains information about dramas in editions of Cyprian Kamil Norwid's writings published up till now, and especially about editorial differences between them, mainly in the field of language, and to a lesser degree, in the field of punctuation. These results are then compared with the text of dramas prepared for a new edition of Norwid's works (Collected Works) that started to appear in 2007 under the imprint of the Learned Society of the Catholic University of Lublin. The Author of the present article has prepared dramas for the edition, taking the poet's autographs or (in case of their being lost) their first edition as the basis. It has turned out that a considerable number of corrections had to be made in the new edition of the text of Norwid's dramas, which is illustrated in the article by numerous examples.

In accordance with the title, the article is concerned with the editorial problems posed by the part of Norwid's work that is least known, that is his notes and albums,. The need of reflection on this domain of the poet's work appeared along with the new edition of the poet's Works. Within the edition Norwid's “portfolios” have been separated as individual volumes, which stresses both the qualitative and quantitative dimension of the phenomenon in the work of the author of On the freedom of speech (Gomulicki's edition of Complete Works included only the texts written with Norwid's own hand, excluding prints and illustrations – drawn both by the poet himself and by other people). On the one hand the article explains the reasons for such a decision, and on the other it undertakes a number of editorial questions as well as ones connected with the text that appear as a consequence of the assumptions that have been made. Apart from the problem of the autonomy of Norwid's notes and albums the question of the integral character of the collection has been touched upon; also, the problem of their final textological form, their contents (e.g. the question if inserts made by hand should be included, as they are not Norwid's own texts, but together with the notes and drawings they constitute a certain semantic and compositional whole). Ordering the illegible and sometimes complicated compositional design of the collection should be accompanied by reflection – which is shown by analyses – saying that in the case of Norwid's notes and albums (e.g. in the case of the so-called “his own summaries” or “the authors summaries”) excessive care taken of legibility and accessibility (an example being Gomulicki's edition) may lead to excessive “polishing”, and in consequence to upsetting the genological bases of the notes and albums. The problem is also raised of legibility of the notes and other sources Norwid used (often the notes are just excerpts from books he had read, and the drawings and water-colors are imitations of other artists' works). Selected issues from the domain of editing notes and albums show the specificity and stress the identity of this part of Norwid's work.

The article is a review of the first volume of the critical edition of Norwid’s prose developed by Rościsław Skręt. The review focuses on the choice of works for editing and print, on establishing the status of source texts, determining the form of the texts for print, performing language modernization and associating the textual material with iconography. Examining the actions undertaken by the editor in all these dimensions, one can put forward a claim that his work tries to follow two contradictory editorial directions. The editor developed an innovative canon of Norwid’s prose and managed to avoid mistakes made by his predecessors. At the same time, one can observe that the editor restrained himself from departing too far from the solutions adopted by the previous editors. This latter tendency is particularly evident on the linguistic plane. Hence, one can describe the reviewed edition of the text as a half-way revolution.

Was the Commynes’s syntactic cohesion (a man “not literary”, father of the genre of memoirs and diplomat of the fifteenth century which syntax has been often described as paratactic or uncohesive) influenced, according to the received idea, by his habit of the diplomatic despatch and was she perceived as uncohesive by his contemporaries? To answer his questions, respectively, we compare the lack of cohesion of the Memoirs with those of his autograph letters and then we search the headlines of the publisher Sauvage (1552) who propose a version pointed as more cohesive than that of the manuscript which serve of base to his edition. The results will show that the letters seem more cohesive than the Memoirs and that its Mémoirs’ s syntax is not underlined as embarrassing by its editor.

This article presents critical edition of enlightenment period’s epithalamium of Antoni Marcin Sienkiewicz (1690–1752) titled “Konstelacyja pierwszych koronnego nieba planet” (“A constellation of the most brilliant planets of the crown sky”). The epithalamium was written in 1724 on the occasion of Maria Zofia Sieniawska’s wedding with Stanislaw Ernest Denhoff. Since some references in the text might be difficult for today’s readers, this article includes the necessary clarifications on mythological characters and the overview of Sieniawski’s and Lubomirski’s families. Moreover, the article presents a short historical note about the author’s biography (he was considered as the most prolific panegyrist of Polish nobility), as well as about Maria Zofia Sieniawska, to whom the work was originally dedicated.

Franciszek Dionizy Kniaźnin has created manuscript for a few years. It was a kind of his poetica will. In this collection, titled Poezje Franciszka Dionizego Kniaźnina ręką własną pisane, author included works published in three previous collections volumes of verse as well as completely new poems. Reused works had many editorial alterations compared to original ones. First time published works had been totally unknown before. Poezje Franciszka Dionizego Kniaźnina ręką własną pisane was not published as printed, scientific edition yet. This article describes today’s editor dilemmas about making a critical edition of four first book contained in the first volume of autograph. Mainly it is focused on the problem of comparasion variants of particular texts, which often are very different.

A new, critical edition of the 8th-century treatise De haeresibus et synodis (CPG 8020) by Patriarch Germanus I of Constantinople is in progress; it will provide new insights, especially into the large extent of sources that were copied or paraphrased. The article takes a close look at three chapters that could be considered as sources for different Christian heresies (Manichaeism, Montanism and Christological dissenters) in 8th-century Byzantium and some of the first new text- and sourcecritical findings. The accounts on Manichaeism and Montanism are based on older, lost sources and can therefore not be consulted as historical sources on these heresies in the Early Byzantine age. The account of the Ecumenical Councils involved in the Christological controversies attributes faith formulas to Councils that did not actually issue them and thus must be dismissed as a historical source on the course of these controversies as well. Nevertheless all three chapters, like the rest of the treatise, testify to the views of an Early Byzantine theologian on heresies and Church Councils and to how he reached his views. This scope for further study is deduced from the character of the text itself and thus especially appropriate.

This paper presents the second critical edition of the poem “Rozbój duchowny” (“Spiritual warfare”) written by Polish poet from 17th century Wacław Potocki. The first edition, published in 1980, prepared by Jan Malicki, has some editorial mistakes, hence the poem was edited again. The commentaries explain biblical and mythological references, the meaning of Old-Polish words as well as the proverbs. The author also points out to the relationship between the text of the poem and work “Spirituale Christiani militis certamen” by Antwerp engraver Hieronymus Wierix and describes the theme of the knight of Christ as a leitmotiv in Potocki’s poems.

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest omówienie oraz próba oceny opublikowanej nakładem wydawnictwa Bellona polskiej edycji krytycznej Mein Kampf Adolfa Hitlera. Przekładu i opracowania podjął się Eugeniusz Cezary Król – wybitny niemcoznawca, który wcześniej dokonał już wyboru i tłumaczenia Dzienników Josepha Goebbelsa. Przygotowane przez niego wydanie Mein Kampf jest pierwszym pełnym polskim przekładem pracy Hitlera, który dodatkowo opatrzono naukowym komentarzem i aparatem krytycznym.
This article discusses and evaluates the Polish critical edition of Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf published by Bellona Publishing House. The translation and edition have been undertaken by Eugeniusz Cezary Król, an outstanding expert on German matters who has already selected and translated Joseph Goebbels’ Diaries. The edition of Mein Kampf prepared by him is the first complete Polish translation of Hitler’s work and has been provided with a scholarly commentary and critical apparatus.

Opis:
The article is concerned with the edition of Cyprian Norwid's Promethidion prepared by Stefan Sawicki. The recognized theoretician, historian and interpreter of literature appears here both as the author of a comprehensive monograph of Promethidion and as an experienced editor embracing the central categories of the poet's viewpoint and artistry, and, on the other hand, with a linguistic precision analyzing particular expressions and tropes. His discerning analysis, careful textological edition of the text and comprehensive interpretation of the poem serve each other. The edition, albeit designed for a broad group of readers, meets the requirements of a critical edition, gives a lot of precisely justified amendments, the necessary explanations, and a list of variants of the text. In the sphere of meanings and structures the poem glitters with variety and shows many aspects of the problems. “Concepts-keys” that are central to the poem are the concept of art (“with no limits”) whose definition is in many ways completed by the concepts of beauty, love, work, good and truth, “constantly approached as if from the side of the conscience”. They are made manifest in utterances by many subjects that have differentiated styles and genres, which is done by means of peculiar techniques (amplifications, approximations, speaking by negation assuming the form of a dialogue, the “counterpoint” technique, evoking the value “by negating anti-values”). However, the whole forms a cohesive “Norwidian collage”, and the image of a “superior speaking subject” appearing as an “image of a prophet of the contemporary Church” has a clear author's stamp. Hence, the message of the poem is perceived “as the voice of a poet: a real one, convinced that what he wants to convey to the society is just”

Opis:
The article focuses upon the description of the massacre of seven Maccabean brothers and their mother, from the seventh chapter of the Second Book of the Maccabees, as one of the most important representational patterns for the chronologically later Christian hagiographic literature, and also outlines theological foundations, developed by the Fathers of the Church, for the inclusion of the heroes of the Jewish uprising from the second century B.C. in the category of martyrdom characteristic of Christianity. In the part devoted to the Old Polish reception of this theme, special attention is devoted to a separate literary rendition of the story, which is the only one of its kind, in A Pathetic Story of one Mother by Samuel Dowgird of Pogowie. A detailed analysis focuses on both placing this adaptation within the entire translation work of the Lithuanian author and the idea of its interpretation. The paper is complemented by a critical edition of Dowgird’s work.
