    Forecasts predicting the reunification of the Korean Peninsula were common throughout the 1990s. Since then, enthusiasm for such predictions has dampened, and though the fundamental assumption of reunification remains, predictions of when and how this will happen have been more restrained. Reunification leaves two unresolved yet interdependent issues: reunification itself, which is the urgent challenge; and the strategic issues that emerge from reunification, which have the potential to fundamentally transform strategic relations in the region of Northeast Asia. Within this context, this paper examines the prospects of Korean reunification against the background of the interstate relations. Initially, it will establish the framework from which such scenarios will emerge: the historical background of the division, the extreme differences between the two states, the role played by the North Korean nuclear threats and the impact of the September 11, 2001 on the interstate relations, and finally general situation and relations in the East Asian region. Then, three possible scenarios of the unification will be developed: through peaceful integration, through the fall of North Korea or through a war. Summing up, even the death of Kim Jong Il will not bring change in the domestic and foreign policy of North Korea which is going to continue an aggressive approach toward the South. In the short-term reunification is definitely not in the interest of the current ROK administration, and the South has no intention of encouraging it. None of the considered scenarios envisions early reunification, and it seems that for the future, the status quo on the Korean Peninsula will remain.

    Japonia oraz Chiny posiadają długą tradycję ingerowania w sytuację na Płw. Koreańskim. Wynikiem tego jest wiele sporów historycznych, ale również i terytorialnych. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest przedstawienie oraz analiza głównych sporów terytorialnych, które wpływają na współczesne relacje dyplomatyczne Chin i Japonii z Koreą Południową oraz Koreą Północną. Zostanie przedstawiona zarówno ich geneza, jak i stan obecny, w tym sytuacje, do których doprowadzała eskalacja konfliktów. Analizie poddane zostaną następujące spory: wyspy Dokdo/Takeshima, skała Ieodo/Suyan i granice wyłącznych stref ekonomicznych na Morzu Żółtym, przebieg granicy chińsko-północnokoreańskiej, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem sprawy wysp na rzekach Yalu i Tumen, a także przynależność państwowa góry Beakdu. Co jakiś czas spory te prowadzą do eskalacji napięć, potęgując zarówno rywalizację polityczną, jak i gospodarczą w Azji Wschodniej, a niemożność ich rozwiązania szkodzi relacjom między państwami koreańskimi a ich sąsiadami.
    Japan and China have a long tradition of interfering with the situation on the Korean Peninsula. The result is a lot of historical and territorial disputes. The aim of this article is to present and analyze the main territorial disputes that affect contemporary Chinese and Japanese diplomatic relations with South Korea and North Korea. Both their genesis and the current state of affairs will be presented, including situations caused by escalation of conflicts. The following disputes will be analyzed: Dokdo / Takeshima islands, Ieodo / Suyan rock and the boundaries of the exclusive economic zones in the Yellow Sea, the Sino-North Korean border, with particular emphasis on the issue of the islands on the Yalu and Tumen rivers, and the nationality of Mount Beakdu. Every now and then, these disputes lead to an escalation of tensions, intensifying both the political and economic rivalry in East Asia, and the inability to solve them harm relations between the Koreas and their neighbors.

    The paper addresses the topic of inter-Korean economic cooperation. The author describes the development of economic relations between the Republic of Korea and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea from their establishment to the present day. The focus of the paper is on determining both countries’ underlying reasons for varying their level of engagement in joint business projects. The author argues that South Korea and North Korea established economic cooperation in order to achieve contradictory goals. North Korea decided to engage in economic cooperation with South Korea after the breakup of the Soviet Union. North Korean leaders were hard pressed to secure a new source of income in order to stay in power. South Korea welcomed North Korea’s willingness to cooperate in the hope that gradual changes in the regime would lead to greater openness and democratization. The analysis uses a simple decision model based on game theory. It incorporates strategies of different levels of engagement of both countries and the consequences of their implementation. This model explains past changes in inter-Korean economic exchange and makes it possible to predict future trends.
    Artykuł poświęcony jest analizie współpracy gospodarczej pomiędzy Republiką Korei i Koreańską Republiką Ludowo-Demokratyczną. Autorka przedstawia przebieg kontaktów gospodarczy pomiędzy krajami od początku ich nawiązania do chwili obecnej, analizuje uwarunkowania nawiązania współpracy ekonomicznej oraz przyczyny zmian w polityce obu państw. Autorka wykazuje, że dynamika relacji gospodarczych między krajami jest pochodną przeciwstawnych celów politycznych, które partnerzy próbują realizować. Korea Północna angażuje się we współpracę, aby uzyskać środki niezbędne do utrzymania urzędującej elity przy władzy. Celem Korei Południowej jest natomiast zwiększenie bezpieczeństwa na półwyspie, poprzez zmiany prowadzące do otwierania reżimu północnokoreańskiego na świat zewnętrzny i przemiany polityczne na północ od strefy zdemilitaryzowanej. Analiza opiera się na modelu decyzyjnym czerpiącym z teorii gier, który ujmuje dostępne krajom strategie działania w postaci różnych poziomów zaangażowania we wzajemną wymianę gospodarczą oraz przewidywane konsekwencje ich zastosowania. Model ten pozwala zarówno tłumaczyć dotychczasowe zmiany w międzykoreańskich stosunkach gospodarczych jak i prognozować przyszłe zachowania partnerów gospodarczych.
