Opis:
Analysis of genetic relatedness and inbreeding in Polish population of the Newfoundland dog breed. The aim of the study was to analyse the fi ve-generation pedigrees of Newfoundland dogs, registered in the Polish Kennel Club and shown in 2015 in Poland. Pedigrees come from the Polish Newfoundland Club website and their analysis was possible with the use of the international pedigree database (https:// www.newfoundlanddog-database.net/). Inbreeding coeffi cient (COI) and ancestor loss coeffi cient (AVK) were calculated and pedigrees were analysed for the presence of common ancestor. Results indicate low mean COI values, with individual values ranging from 0.78% to 7.03%. The mean kinship was 3.14. Five-generation pedigree analysis did not show high inbreeding in the population studied and AVK exceeded the suggested value of 85% only in one case. It can be thus concluded that the population of Polish Newfoundlands, at least its part, presented at shows in 2015 and most likely intended for breeding, is not to be considered inbred.

Opis:
Sweetland is a fictional record of the resettlement of a fishing town in Newfoundland due to a fishing crisis caused by a cod moratorium. The main character, Moses Sweetland, refuses to leave his home island and by feigning his own death manages to stay behind when all other inhabitants depart. The article focuses on the transformations that the deserted island undergoes, with special focus on Gothic elements, the motif of the map and Pierre Nora’s concept of lieu de m´emoire.

Opis:
A diverse fauna of helcionelloid molluscs, hyoliths, and other small shelly fossils is described from limestone layers within the Forteau Formation of the Bonne Bay region in western Newfoundland. The fauna is dominated by internal moulds of various molluscs and tubular problematica, but also includes hyolith opercula, echinoderm ossicles, and other calcareous small shelly fossils preserved by phosphatisation. Originally organophosphatic shells are comparatively rare, but are represented by brachiopods, hyolithelminths, and tommotiids. The fauna is similar to other late Early Cambrian faunas from slope and outer shelf settings along the eastern margin of Laurentia and may be of middle Dyeran age. The similarity of these faunas indicates that at least by the late Early Cambrian, a distinctive and laterally continuous outer shelf fauna had evolved. The Forteau Formation also shares elements with faunas from other Early Cambrian provinces, strengthening ties between Laurentia and Australia, China, and Europe during the late Early Cambrian. Two new taxa of problematic fossil organisms are described, the conical Clavitella curvata gen. et sp. nov. and the wedge−shaped Sphenopteron boomerang gen. et sp. nov.
