Nazism
Opis:
After World War Two, German historiography focused its attention on a few aspects: 1) the resistance movement in Nazi Germany; 2) losses that Germans suffered from the Allies in the years 1943-45 (air raids, contributions, plunder, rapes and robbing); 3) the occupation and 45-year long division of Germany. Only if the events were shown in this way, could Germans play the role of the victims instead of initiators of the war. The end of every decade after the fall of the Third Reich brought a discussion on the year 1945. A question was asked: Was it the end of German statehood or was it rather the beginning of a new stage on the way to a democratic state of free German countries? At the same time, East German historians argued with West German ones on the continuity of the German Reich after 1945. From 1951, it was the German Federal Republic that identified itself with the German Reich. Since the reunion of both German countries, the historiography of the new, joint German state has tried to show that the Third Reich was not rooted in German tra ditions, but was – as Ernst Nolte claimed – a „false link in the history of Germany”, and that the feeling of defeatism prevailed among Germans in 1945. It was social democrats and communists that were first to shake off that feeling. The contemporary German Federal Republic, does not feel responsible for the Third Reich, even though it is its legal heir. Summing up the positions of German historiography (in the years 1949-1990 of two German states – the German Federal Republic and the German Democratic Republic), I believe that the escape from the Eastern Front, expelling Germans, unconditional surrender, and hardships of the post-war period were the direct result of the war started in 1939 by the German nation led by Adolf Hitler. The sooner Germans universally accept it, the more respected European nation they will become. They must also recognise the fact that after 700 years, history came full circle – both Polish and German peoples have returned to their roots – the times when their predecessors came as settlers and conquerors…

Opis:
Jerzy W. Borejsza regarded the term ‘totalitarianism’ as a helpful tool in describing the political systems in Nazi Germany, fascist Italy, and the Bolshevik/communist Soviet Union, but opted for restricted use of the term. Apart from the classical determinants of a totalitarian system, he believed that the mobilisation of hatred against the predefined ethnic/national, racial, or class enemy was essential to any totalitarianism. Rather than adding a new distinguishing feature of the totalitarian system, the Polish historian carried out a series of multi-aspect comparative analyses of its earlier-defined traits and characteristics. He has drawn a precise distinction between a totalitarian and authoritarian system. Not satisfied with apparent similarities, he tried to explore the issue more deeply, identifying different intensities of the phenomena specific to totalitarian systems. He stressed a gradation of totalitarianism in the different totalitarian systems, at the different stages of their functioning. To his credit goes the introduction in the historiography of the concept of ‘anti-Slavism’ and, as part of it, anti-Polonism, as essential traits of the National Socialist ideology. He opposed the simplifications tending to appear in broadly used terms, the attempts to ‘ideologise’ and ‘politicise’ the history, particularly in describing the communist totalitarianism. According to Borejsza, fascism, Nazism, and communism had once frequented the same school of totalitarian hatred and took there the same classes – but they were differently evaluated when it came to the finals.

The author of this article analyses The Stone, a play by Marius von Mayenburg, a renowned and highly acclaimed German playwright, dramatist and director. He perceives this work as a reckoning with Germany’s national so-cialist past. Through the prism of three generations of the Heising family, Mayenburg exposes the mechanisms at work in the creation of a family legend (“we are decent people; we were never Nazis; we helped the Jewish people”), which turns out to be merely a product of distortion and misrepresentation of historical truth, and an attempt to avert the blame.

Opis:
The Nazi past of family members is a recurrent theme in contemporary German literature. It cannot be easily forgotten, as it keeps resurfacing and influences the next generations. This is the central idea of Thomas Lehr’s novella Frühling (Spring), published in 2001. Its protagonist discovers that during World War II his father was a physician in the Dachau concentration camp. Devastated by this revelation, the son cannot cope with it and as a result commits suicide. Lehr’s book reflects upon the Nazi’s children and their life in the shadow of history. The story also points out how it is possible to cope with this haunting past.

The forgotten victims of Nazism are those, whose suffering was not acknowledged in the collective memory of a nation. The abovementioned category describes individuals persecuted on the ground of sexual orientation, both during the period of Third Reich and many years after its downfall. The research problem of the article is the approach towards the subject of gay persecution in the Polish historical narrative. The author performs an analysis of the reception of homosexual Nazism victims‘ testimonies, taking into consideration political and ideological aspects of text refraction. The Polish memory discourse rejects the issue of non-heteronormativity in the context of World War II history. It is demonstrated by, inter alia, lack of memorial sites and marginalization of the subject in historical education.

The objective of this article is to present a critical analysis of selected elements of Nazi legacy in the Federal Republic of Germany (Deutsche Bundesrepublik, BRD). The remnants of the Nazi system have been tolerated, and even sheltered by the authorities of West Germany in almost all aspects of life. A question arises, then, about the effectiveness of the denazification after the Second World War and about a change in mentality in German society, as it should be noted that some elements of Nazi legacy were abandoned only in the 21st century, and therefore the Federal Republic of Germany has not managed to fully make reparations to the victims of Nazism. This article also discusses the fact that in a post-totalitarian state it is extremely difficult to find ‘pristine’ biographies, considering the number of former members of NSDAP who filled important offices in the BRD.

Forced labor is a perversion of the law, an activity to which one is forced, to which one is not freely obliged, and for which there is no legal basis. Of course, laws can be passed that regulate forced labor. But such laws turn out to be an injustice, if one reflects on them. Therefore, I will first outline the subject of the article, the forced labor of foreigners under National Socialism. Then I will discuss the principle of forced labor, the “disenfranchisement”, then its implementation. Finally, I will deal with the relationship between law and morality.

W ten sposób charakterystyka pewnej formy przemocy, którą wypracował autor, będący jednocześnie jej ofiarą, uzyskuje poparcie i szeroki komentarz.
The article presents, analyzes, and interprets the concept of useless violence, which appears in the fifth part of Primo Levi's book "The Drowned And The Saved". Levi tries to capture the specificity of the violence used by the German Nazis with this concept. The author's approach to the phenomenon of useless violence is extended to include additional accounts by witnesses and the findings of researchers who deal with the functioning of concentration camps and the phenomenon of Nazi terror. In this way, the description of a certain form of violence developed by the author who is also a victim of it obtains support and broad commentary.

Sanctity is the very essence of political power, which needs its own rituals, myths, and symbols. This sacred nimbus confirms the authority of the ruler, making it unusual, mysterious and – as a result – untouchable. Religion is also the main source of the legitimacy of power, changing rulers into the sons of gods or at least kings „by the grace of God”. The twentieth century brought a new phenomenon: totalitarian personality cult, which is based on archaic beliefs and myths concerning power. Personality cult was a kind of charismatic power described by Max Weber, who considered charisma as strictly personal supernatural gifts of a new ruler. This article focuses on efforts made by the twentieth century dictators in order to create an artificial charisma and to become a living (and ruling) god.

Wrocław and Lvov are two big metropolises full of historical monuments which were located on the borderlands of terrains occupied by nations with glorious past and their own universities. The location played a decisive role in the fact that both universities were involved in political and national conflicts. Lvov defended Polish traditions in the East and Wrocław initiated and organized the intellectual fight for maintaining the German eastern borderland. Jan Kazimierz University (Uniwersytet Jana Kazimierza) in Lvov was founded earlier than the University of Wrocław. The first was Polish in character, the latter was German. Political changes after the Second World War resulted in liquidation of the Jan Kazimierz university in Lvov. It was replaced by the national Ukrainian university. The German university in Wrocław was also liquidated. The new Polish university used its building and libraries. At the same time inherited from Jan Kazimierz University its cadre and ethos and referred to the most prominent German scholars.

The aim of this article is to present an ironic, grotesque, farcical and tragic dimension of totalitarianism in Martin Amis’s selected works. The author is going to analyse and juxtapose three dictatorial ideologies: Nazism, Communism and Islamic fundamentalism while showing Martin Amis’s distinctive literary techniques, styles and modes used with reference to the examination of each of these three issues. Firstly, the emphasis will be placed on the exploration of those novels of the British writer that present Nazism and Communism and their aftermath, namely Time’s Arrow, House of Meetings and Koba the Dread: Laughter and the Twenty Million. This section will present ironic, grotesque, satirical as well as tragic facets of these two totalitarian systems depicted by Martin Amis. The subsequent part will focus on the issues of Islamist fundamentalism, terrorism and the relations between Islamist and Western culture at the turn of the third millennium. Here, the author is going to scrutinize Martin Amis’s novel The Second Plane: September 11: Terror and Boredom as well as she will refer to the writer’s miscellaneous interviews, talks and discussions. Similarly to the previous part devoted to the analysis of Nazism and Communism, this one will draw the attention to Amis’s grotesque, farcical and ironic delineation of Islamic fundamentalism, yet here, a special emphasis will be placed on the writer’s description of a political and social aspect of this matter rather than on his concern for linguistic an stylistic innovation. Finally, by juxtaposing these three totalitarian ideologies in Martin Amis’s selected fiction the author is going to show numerous interpretations and sides of this subject matter, ranging from political and social debate to cultural and literary criticism.
