The author attempts to go beyond the study of the history of Islamic philosophy to the larger theme of religious dialogue between Christians and Muslims. He explores first some of the conditions that are required for any successful Christian-Muslim conversation. Next, he turns to some of the central issues specific to dialogue between Christians and Muslims. In addressing these themes he points to resources that are particularly useful to those trying to teach introductory courses on this complex matter, and to give students an inkling of where they might look for further training to embark upon more advanced types of dialogue. In conclusion, the author returns to his starting point and considers various levels at which dialogue can be begun, even at an elementary stage.

Opis:
According to saint John of Damascus, Islam is one of the Christian sects. The difference between Islam and Christianity is mainly in understanding Logos (Logos as an eternal Word of God) and “logias” – the words of God that were revealed and written down. Christians understand Logos as the eternal Word of God directed to people by God. This Word is Jesus Christ. Meanwhile, Muslims refer to Jesus as a prophet and teacher. The Word of God for them is Koran, but initially it was also the Holy Bible. Muslims could not comprehend the person of the Holy Spirit and perceived Him only as a Divine power. Nevertheless, the biggest problem for Muslims living at the time of John of Damascus was to understand the embodiment.

This article presents the points of view from which interreligious relations in the Ottoman world have been approached in academic historiography, the frames of interpretation and concepts that have been used, and the critical reassessments and revisions that are currently underway. Conceptions about the position of the non-Muslims and the nature and forms of interreligious relations in the Ottoman Empire have changed perceptively over the last half century. The mosaic world of subjugated nations and self-governed religious communities (millets) that lived parallel and distinct lives gave its place, in the last two decades of the twentieth century, to the plural society of extensive interreligious interaction at individual or communal level. In tandem came the shift from an emphasis on the oppression of the non-Muslims to that on toleration. We are now in a new phase of revision which focuses on the forms, extent and limits of toleration and intercommunal interaction, and pays close attention to change over time.

Opis:
Since the beginning of islam in the 7th century christians and Muslims have been a permanent challenge for themselves. the confrontation and the closeness which accompanythem through the entire history are rooted in the universal and monotheistic character of both religions. From the christian point of view it would be diffcult to talk about interreligious dialogue or at least its modern developments, without the Second Vatican council (1962–1965) and the declaration nostra aetate. the council recognized in it the spiritual, moral and cultural values present in different religions, emphasizing spiritual and moral values between Muslim and christians. For the frst time in the history of the catholic church, the council’s fathers offcially called for the co-operation with Muslims. this is the starting point of the real dialogue between christians and Muslims. This article attempts to describe and analyse – in three parts – some aspects of the dialogical initiatives of christian-Muslim relations. A greater part of it refers to the roman catholic church, but some examples of interpretation and dialogical initiatives of the Orthodox and protestant churches are included as well. Islam as a point of reference is taken as a whole. After a short introduction containing a general defnition of dialogue and its interreligious form the frst part deals with historical facts which shaped the dialogical attitudes. the selected historical facts build a background forsome theological ideas on islam in orthodox, catholic and protestant traditions. The second part focuses on the practical aspects of dialogue – its forms and representative institutions, i.e. the pontifcal council for interreligious Dialogue, World council of churches and Orthodox center of the ecumenical patriarch in chambésy which are engaged in the dialogue on behalf of the main christian churches. the third part offers some ideas concerning aarguments for dialogue, its effciency and quality which might be important for the future of dialogue.the modern history of christian-Muslim relations shows that the dialogue between adherents of these two largest religions is possible despite that it is not an easy undertaking. the author underlines that there is no alternative to dialogue as there is no better way to defeat prejudices and heal the wounds of the past.

Opis:
Despite being a mineral-rich country, in 2012 the Central African Republic (CAR) was ranked 10th in the Fragile (formerly Failed) States Index according to Fund for Peace. The history of this country has been turbulent. Regular rebellions and disastrous state economic policies have led to economic, political and social collapses in the CAR. The most recent rebellion, conducted by Michel Djotodia and Séléka’s rebel coalition was different than previous coups, supported financially and military by France and Chad. The rebellion has had several stages and lead to the CAR being accused of cannibalism, religious war and genocide. Its conclusion is meant to be a division of the CAR into the supposedly Muslim and Christian parts, even though it does not reflect the country’s actual religious divide; the majority of the CAR’s mineral resources, however, are located in what would be the Muslim part. The article describes the events that took place between December 2012 and May 2014, which formed the basis of false accusations of genocide, religious war and cannibalism in the CAR. The article points towards the Séléka organisation, which from December 2012 has been carrying out its plan to decimate and mentally and financially impoverish the Central Africans, leading to the country’s division. The article analyses two military organisations that have been fighting each other since December 2013, describing their military aims, the course of fighting and the results of their military actions. The text presents both the consequences of aid given to the CAR by France and Chad, and their hidden agenda.

Opis:
In addition to the western Mediterranean culture, Cyprian Kamil Norwid’s cultural interests also include the world of Islam and the civilization of the East. As emerges from the poet’s surviving letters and notes, his interest focused mainly on the question of the origins of the Muslim religion and the centuries-old history of Christian-Muslim relations. As a descendant of King John III Sobieski , the victor over Turks at Vienna, and an avid reader of Jerusalem Delivered by Tasso, Norwid simply could not neglect this issue in his ruminations and studies. His notes on Islam in Album Orbis were illustrated with many graphics and drawings related to eastern themes. It seems that Norwid’s historical approach to Muslim issues was to a large extent shaped by some patristic sources, and first of all by writings of Saint John of Damascus, rather than by his contemporary scientific or travelogue orientalism.

Opis:
Poddając analizie pół wieku relacji pomiędzy chrześcijanami i muzułmanami, autor usiłuje odpowiedzieć na pytanie w jakiej mierze Nostra aetate stanowi dzisiaj inspirację do dialogicznej relacji międzyreligijnej. Deklaracja zachowuje teologiczny dynamizm swej epoki.
Openness to dialogue with religions of the world initiated by the conciliar declaration Nostra aetate presents an unprecedented event and begins a new era in relations between the Church and Muslims. Very useful turns out to be a critical reading of the declaration 50 years after its promulgation. Analyzing half a century of relations between Christians and Muslims, the author tries to answer the question to what extent Nostra aetate is today an inspiration for inter-dialogic relationship. The declaration retains theological dynamism of its age. The author compares the aporia of the Christian-Muslim conciliar era to today – first by the criteria of Nostra aetate, then in the light of later texts of the Magisterium. Finally, given the growing Islamic fundamentalism, the author wonders how to make it that the dialogue promoted by the declaration would become the actual challenge today.
