Opis:
Referring to historical and sociological literature, and based on extensive fieldwork in Greenpoint, Brooklyn in 2006 and 2010, the text presents a particular interpretation of the Polish female immigrants’ work experience in the position of live-out domestic cleaners in New York City. My interpretation is that their work, as they see it, contains elements of both small business enterprise and live-out servant. Generally, Polish Greenpoint cleaners associated small business-like characteristics with working in the middle and upper-middle class homes in Manhattan, while servitude-like ones – with working in the lower middle class Hasidic homes in Brooklyn.

POLISH VILLAGE
UNITED STATES
Opis:
Babica is one of the Subcarpathian villages from which, at the turn of the century, the first streams of migration to the United States began to flow. Emigration from this village rapidly became a common phenomenon. Krystyna Duda-Dziewierz, sociologist, decided to study the process. The research was conducted during the interwar period, and the results published in 1938 in a book entitled „The Malopolska village and the emigration to the U.S. A study of Babica village in Rzeszow Poviat1”. The study is one of the best papers describing the emigration of Polish rural people. Today, travel to the U.S. is still very popular and occupies an import ant place in the life of this community. A century of emigration in an almost unchanged direction owes its continuity to the dense social networks and migration chains which have developer since the first emigrants. The article compares the migration of contemporary Babica inhabitants to emigration from the beginning of the previous century

Opis:
In this essay I connect the decisions and experiences of individual migrants, starting with Wladyslaw Chuchla, and place them in larger, even global frames of decision-making and the options societies of departure and of arrival provide as well as constraints they impose. This involves relating Chuchla’s – and, in a comparative perspective, other migrants’ – place of birth in its evolvement over time in the macro-region and its history. It also involves a discussion of the routes to exit from both the local course of history and the geography. Thus, I discuss the Atlantic Migration System and the Polish lands in an integrated perspective: were conditions in the Polish lands singular or may they be compared to patterns in other parts of the world? I will look at the agency of migrants leaving other parts of the world but sharing with Chuchla the destination North America. This discussion will raise methodological and theoretical issues. Local communities are the spaces in which men and women make their decisions. They are transculturally rather than transnationally connected but the frames in which decisions are made characterize larger regions. I argue that migrating men and women made their decisions to depart and about where to arrive in the frame of inter-state power relations, impositions by the elites (and, sometimes, neighbors) of self-elevated national cultures, and in local everyday-cultures, norms, beliefs framed by regional economies and the human capital that could be developed in them. Emigration was a counter project to “nation” building. Polish migrants could chose destinations in a near-global diaspora, provided information and travel connections existed to their place of departure. Diaspora, too, is localized and in many different ways transcultural.

Opis:
The article focuses on Andrew J. Borkowski’s collection of short-stories Copernicus Avenue published in 2011 and awarded the 2012 Toronto Book Award. Written by the son of a Polish war veteran, Copernicus Avenue shows how deeply the trauma of the Second World War has affected the Polish diaspora in Canada. The article begins with an analysis of the stories located in Poland, illustrating the ambivalent moral choices of the protagonists during the war. The traumatic memories of war haunt the protagonists in their New World homes and influence the lives of their descendants as well. On the example of three characters, I illustrate the different approaches to diaspora and homeland in the Polish post-war community in Toronto. I also trace the complex itineraries of the characters, showing that the concept of roots shapes their identity as much as the complicated routes of migrations. As a result, the Polish diaspora in Copernicus Avenue appears a heterogeneous space of community and antagonism, solidarity and exclusion.

Opis:
The main aim of the article is an analysis of migration streams flowing from Babica to the United States in the context of the social topography of the village. Babica is a village located in the south-eastern Poland, in the Province of Podkarpacie. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth century emigration from this countryside became very popular phenomenon. During the Interwar Period, the research on emigration from this region was conducted by the sociologist Krystyna Duda-Dziewierz. As a major issue, she analyzed an influence of emigration on the social organization of a local community. One of the most important factor, which affected emigration from this village, was the social topography of Babica. Therefore, the analysis conducted in this article refers mainly to the impact of the social topography of the village on the migration process.

MIGRATION
Opis:
Integration of the European Union has modified the traditional understanding of the notion of “migration”. As Adrian Favell puts it, currently - after the EU enlargement - migration from the Eastern European to the Western European states takes 2 forms: one is traditional immigration into European nation-states; the other one is “elite migration” of the EU citizens whose career strategies are cosmopolitan and post-national. Educational migration may be described as the second form; students are moving temporarily and they are open to decisions to further migrate. It is interesting to examine the links between these two types of migration; I will do this on the example of the Polish society in the UK, where both the labour migration and the educational migration has significantly increased after the Poland’s accession to the EU. My study is based on in-depth interviews, followed by a short questionnaire. The query took place in London in the academic year 2009/10 and included students and graduates of the four London universities: Westminster, Metropolitan, City University and colleges of University of London. In addition, I pay attention to government reports and statistic surveys.

Opis:
The main task of the paper is to analyse the socio-familial aspects of the newest migration flows from Poland to Ireland that have been taking place since 2004. In order to examine this migratory phenomenon I apply a three-level analysis: on the macro-level I study statistical demographic data obtained from the Irish population censuses; on the mezzo-level I use a longitudinal (3-year) survey carried out within a selected immigrant subpopulation; on the micro-level I analyse 30 unstructured interviews with Polish immigrants. The results show that Polish emigration to Ireland is, first of all, driven by economic factors. Nonetheless, the socio-familial conditions and marital strategies also play a significant role in the processes of shaping one’s migratory experiences. The paper concludes that many Polish emigrants, including those who constituted the first flow of immigration to Ireland, are well-settled at the destination. The socio-familial circumstances become a critical factor in choosing their migration strategy.

Opis:
The article refers to research carried out at the Migration and Ethnic Relations department of the Faculty of Anthropology and Sociology at Paris Diderot University in 2008-2009. The paper describes the gradual process of changes associated with the opening of the labor market to Polish immigrants in France and its impact on adaptation strategies of Poles taking up unauthorised employment. The first part of the article analyses Poles’ immigration in the context of selected aspects of employment in France. In the second part, examples of immigrant strategies show how the adaptation processes have evolved over several years. The paper also describes how competition arises on the labor market of unauthorised work and the ethnicisation of social roles. The third, major part, analyses the role of social networks in the context of an access to the labor market under different systems of recruitment. This part also presents the case of Kolbuszowa – and the phenomenon of integration or exclusion of new members of this immigrant community among which migration networks have developed. The transition from the gray area to the legal labour force is analyzed in terms of labour context impact and the position of an immigrant in a given community.

Opis:
Based on case studies conducted in the greater Glasgow area, the paper focuses on the experiences of Polish Entrepreneurs in a migration context. Very little is known about Polish immigrant businesses that have been set up in Western Europe in this latest EU post-enlargement era. The aim of this paper is to examine the key factors leading to emigration, business start-ups and settlement by Polish Entrepreneurs in Scotland; including the relationship with the Polish Community. The paper proposes a new understanding of Ethnic Minority Entrepreneurship and innovative behaviour. This research highlights the importance of incremental strategies for emigration, business start-up and settlement amongst Polish Entrepreneurs in Scotland. Prior to venturing into a business start-up, most of the Polish new-born Entrepreneurs interviewed had secured a job in the UK using employment agencies from Poland. However, this employment had failed to meet their standard of living expectations. In addition, the Polish Entrepreneurs studied, unlike other Ethnic Minority Entrepreneurs, rely solely on their own savings rather than benefiting from financial resources and advice from the Polish community. The Polish community is seen as a market and Polish Entrepreneurs are able to spot opportunities within the enclave-markets. Finally, the role of the household in the decision to become self-employed will be highlighted to better understand longer-term settlement amongst Polish Entrepreneurs.

Opis:
The paper discusses educational strategies of Polish migrant mothers parenting in the United Kingdom. The main argument concerns a growing need for examining the diversity and heterogeneity of the Polish migrant parents, particularly evident in the educational choices they make for children growing up abroad. The findings stem from a doctoral research project, supplemented by the data from the Polish schooling in UK – tradition and modernity study. Qualitative methodological approaches of both projects relied on conducting interviews. The topic of educational choices is anchored in the discussion of three models of motherhood, which seemingly distinguish the approaches to Polish supplementary schooling, as well as highlight inherent differences and conflicts within the views pertinent to local (English or Welsh) schooling that the parents share. The focus is placed on parental reasons for children’s participation in Polish education, further elaborating on the motivations of the parents who do not take up this form of learning. The paper pinpoints a transnational character of the educational choices, linking them to the debates on social and educational capital of migrants. Finally, it puts forward a claim that there is a tendency among Polish parents to somewhat overburden their children with multiple educational pathways.

Opis:
Over the last two decades, globalization has resulted in an unprecedented level of migration flows due to the freedom of movement, and, social exchange, due to the improvement of both telecommunications and increasingly affordable travel. A striking feature of what has come to be termed the ‘new migration’ is precisely the dynamic ways in which some arriving migrants, such as the Poles, have capitalised on their transnational associations, via a most efficient ‘exploitation’ of existing/new social capital networks. On the other hand, such benefits appear to remain beyond the reach of other arriving groups, such as the Polish Roma. The paper focuses on narrativising the differing patterns of migratory experience, by utilising data from research on post-Accession Polish Roma and Polish migrants arriving to the UK. It examines social capital formation in urban settings, juxtaposed with their respective relationships’ to the ‘wider world’. Also, their respective mechanisms adopted in order to ‘appropriate’ contested space as a basis for individual / group interaction with the wider society, and, the differential levels of success in securing such. The paper also analyses how the groups’ culturally determined public and private activities (such as boundary observation) can inhibit their public representation, and resulting ownership to shared public space. This analysis is intentionally contextualised; set within the geopolitical and cultural contexts of each group. It explores the contingent nature of existing social / cultural capital, and the negotiation of space for the ‘self’, as well as for the group. The detailed personal experiences, illustrated via personal narratives, exemplify the situational realities – that social capital can be seen as both an enhanced provider [as in the case of Polish migrants], or an inhibitor [as in the case of Polish Roma], of equitable representation within public space in civil society.

Opis:
‘Mobility’ is a zeitgeist of the European Union. European enlargement and the removal of borders in Central and Eastern Europe has reinvigorated geographical mobility in Europe while the extension of neo-liberal economic reform across the region has been said to offer opportunities for social mobility to a new demography. The right to spatial and social mobility in the EU is described as enhancing freedom, opportunity and choice for large numbers of people living in Central and Eastern Europe, yet the reality for many people living and working across borders in the EU is marked still by poverty, uncertainty and immobility. How do we conceptualise this inequality within a discourse of ‘free movement’ and ‘equality of opportunity’ in Europe? In this paper I will discuss theories of mobility that have shaped the discourse on mobility and immobility in the EU in recent times. I will explore the ways in which this discourse has contributed to an almost immutable acceptance of the EU as a ‘mobile space’. Adding to this I will present some early empirical findings from case studies in the Edinburgh, Scotland and Krakow, Poland to show that the everyday experiences of young Polish people who negotiate the invisible borders of the EU to find ‘opportunities’ has many dimensions, raising further questions about how ‘mobility’ is perceived and enacted by young Polish people living and working in the UK.

Artykuł analizuje, w jaki sposób norweskie instytucje edukacyjne, w szczególności przedszkola, przekazują idee i normy kulturowe odnoszące się do dzieciństwa. Podstawą artykułu są wyniki badań etnograficznych prowadzonych wśród Polek, mieszkających w Oslo i okolicach – nauczycielek przedszkolnych i (czasem jednocześnie) mam dzieci uczęszczających do przedszkoli.
The article analyzes the ways Norwegian educational institutions, especially Kindergartens, transmit ideas and cultural norms regarding childhood. The article is based on empirical ethnographic research among Polish women residing in Oslo and vicinity, including Kindergarten teachers and mothers of preschool age students. In some instances, the women were both teachers and mothers of Kindergarten students. In particular, we focus on hierarchies and childhood discourses related to the role of public institutions in raising and education young children. We ask the following research questions: How is the role of Kindergarten defined in Norway? How does it differ from the role Kindergarten plays in Poland? What values are transmitted in Norwegian Kindergartens? What is the opinion of Polish mothers, whose children attend Norwegian Kindergartens, about these values? We also look at communication strategies between parents and teachers and analyze their consequences.

The state membership of Upper Silesia has changed constantly throughout its history. This insecurity resulted in family life, ethnic identity and attachment to a private homeland – Upper Silesia. The aim of this paper is to discuss the problem of the identity and rootedness of the people who migrated from Upper Silesia to West Germany between 1970 and 2000 as “(Spät-)Aussiedler” – ethnic Germans or former German citizens. The paper is based on research that I carried out on migrants from Upper Silesia to the Federal Republic of Germany. The article attempts to present the background and historical context of the migration from Upper Silesia to the Federal Republic of Germany. There were a variety of reasons for migrating. Opis:
The concept of mixed marriage refers to the relationship of people representing different cultures (intercultural marriage), religions (interreligious marriage or interfaith marriage) or nationality (transnational marriage). Polish women are increasingly deciding to marry foreigners, which are concluded both in Poland and abroad. Marriages of people from different countries, using different languages, brought up and educated in different cultural or religious systems may encounter difficulties in building social / family relationships. This may mean that Polish women in mixed marriages may be / become victims of domestic, economic, psychological, physical and sexual violence, often conditioned by customary norms. What’s more, not all types of violence or crimes against women are ever banned in the countries where Polish migrant women live. The situation can be further complicated when it comes to a marriage regulated, for example, by Sharia law. The article attempts to answer the question whether Polish legal regulations (or international agreements ratified by Poland) guarantee that women from mixed marriages receive any kind of protection, and if so, where and how they can apply for it.
