Opis:: For centuries there has been Polish-language education in Lithuania which results from the centuries-long presence and tradition of the Polish national minority in this country. Polish education in Lithuania has its successes, but also problems that arise from the political and cultural specificity of the issue. On the one hand, it should be noted that in no other country (except Poland) there are as many state-run schools with Polish language of instruction as in Lithuania, on the other – it must be said that currently Polish-language education in Lithuania has become the source of many tensions in Poland and Lithuania inter-state relations. Polish education in Lithuania was a problem for the communist authorities of Soviet Lithuania, and now – for the authorities of independent Lithuania, which undertake both assimilation and integration activities concerning several thousand students and teachers of these schools. The first part of the article presents the situation of Polish-language education in the period of Soviet Lithuania between 1945 and 1990, marking the desperate struggle of parents and teachers to maintain the Polish language of teaching in these schools. The second chapter analyses the issue during the years of independent Lithuania – between 1990 and 2017, emphasizing the revival of Polish education in 1990–2000 and the persistent pursuit of the Polish minority society in Lithuania of ensuring education in Polish and maintain the existing state. The third chapter examines the indicator of higher education of the Polish minority in Lithuania against a national background, signifying that it was twice lower than the national average throughout the whole period. Moreover, it presents the funding of universities by ‘student basket’ model and proportion of school graduates with Polish language of instruction in this model and assesses the prospect of solving the problem.

Opis:: Odzyskanie przez Litwę niepodległości przyniosło polskiej mniejszości narodowej znaczną poprawę w zakresie możliwości rozwoju własnej kultury. Szczególny wpływ na to miało otwarcie granic, które pozwoliło na zacieśnienie kontaktów z Polską oraz Polakami rozsianymi po całym świecie. Przyczyniło się m.in. do powstawania nowych polskich organizacji, a przede wszystkim do budowy Domu Kultury Polskiej w Wilnie, który stał się miejscem spotkań kulturalnych. Działania te sprzyjały podtrzymywaniu i rozwojowi świadomości narodowej, zachowaniu własnej tożsamości oraz przekazywaniu jej następnym pokoleniom. Szczególną rolę w tym procesie odegrali ludzie, którzy poprzez swoją ciężką pracę i podejmowane aktywności wkładali wiele trudu w krzewienie ojczystego słowa i kultury. Dzięki ich wysiłkom kultura polska na Litwie przetrwała i wyróżniła się wśród innych rozwijających się kulturalnie na tych terenach mniejszości narodowych. Każdy, kto spotkał na swej drodze tych niezwykłych ludzi, starał się za ich przykładem pielęgnować piękną polską kulturę i tak jak oni przekazywać ją swojemu otoczeniu. Warto zauważyć, że istnieją czynniki łączące ze sobą ludzi, którzy utożsamiają się z jednym narodem i kulturą. Z pewnością dla Polaków zamieszkujących Republikę Litewską takimi ogniwami były m.in. język, religia, literatura, pieśni i tańce narodowe. Należy zatem przybliżać działalność polskich zespołów pieśni i tańca, teatrów amatorskich, różnorodnych stowarzyszeń i instytucji kulturalnych, które w szczególny sposób dbały o pielęgnowanie polskiej kultury, a poprzez przekazywanie jej kolejnym pokoleniom chroniły środowiska polskie przed wynarodowieniem.
The regaining of independence by Lithuania brought the Polish national minority a significant improvement in terms of the possibility of developing their own culture. This was particularly influenced by the opening of borders, which allowed closer contacts with Poland and Poles scattered around the world. This contributed to the creation of new Polish organizations, and above all to the construction of the Polish Cultural Centre in Vilnius, which became a place of cultural meetings. These activities were favourable for maintaining and developing national awareness, preserving and passing on identity to future generations. A special role in this process was played by people who, with their hard work and actions, put a lot of effort into promoting their native language and culture. Thanks to their efforts, Polish culture in Lithuania survived and stood out from other national minorities in these areas. Everyone who met these extraordinary people on their way tried to follow them and take care of the beautiful Polish culture and, just like them, pass it on to their surroundings. It should be noted that there are factors that unite people who identify with one nation and culture. Certainly, for Poles living in the Republic of Lithuania such factors included language, religion, literature, national songs and dances. Therefore, the activity of Polish song and dance ensembles, amateur theatres, various associations and cultural institutions, which particularly cultivated Polish culture, and by passing it on to the next generations, protected them from denationalisation.

Opis:: Polish press which develops outside Poland, particularly in the states where Poles have always lived (native communities), plays a particular role. It is an excellent tool for the integration within a group and it is perceived as a motivator to relate to the native country as well as the country of settlement. This function stems from the triad characteristics of diaspora media (native country, country of settlement and the environment of a national minority). The media integrate the recipients and support them in the face of political and social threats; they facilitate many cultural and social activities, intergroup dialogue and are a part of wider civic objectives and processes resulting from basic media roles.
