- I n Poland European Heritage Day 2008 celebrations took place on 13-14 and 20-21 September. The event was organised under the slogan “The roots of tradition. From the family home to the fatherland”, which referred to the multi-cultural nature of Polish society and inclined towards further reflection on the connections between the place of residence and the feeling of national identity. The opening ceremony was held on 13 September in Byczyna, a mediaeval small town located at the crossing of historical trade routes and the meeting point of the contemporary frontiers of five voivodeships: Lower Silesia, Greater Poland, Lódz, Silesia and Opole. The honorary guest at the inauguration was Tomasz Merta, the General Conservator of Historical Monuments. 2 000 events were part of the Days celebrations, with about 400 000 persons attending. As in other countries, in Poland too the process of stirring an awareness of regional and national identity and, at the same time, recalling the joint roots and traditions of European culture is enjoying the increasing interest and support of local communities, self-government authorities, cultural institutions and private persons. The coordinator of this year’s Days was the National Heritage Board of Poland, whose partners included the Civic Education Centre and PKP Intercity. The honorary patron was the Minister of Culture and National Heritage. National mass media patronage was entrusted to the daily “Rzeczpospolita”, the monthly “Spotkania z Zabytkami” and two Internet portals – “Wirtualna Polska” and “Podróże”.
