Opis:
The Belqa Group of Jordan (Upper Cretaceous–Eocene) contains a remarkable succession of sedimentary lithofacies, including chalk, sandstone, chert, phosphorite, oyster mounds and organic-rich marls deposited along the passive southern margin of the Neo-Tethys Ocean. The Belqa Group is now outcropping in spectacular wadis where they can be studied in detail. The exceptional outcrops exposures provide unique opportunities for studying three-dimensional spatial facies variations. However, this 3D facies distribution requires robust time control and the combination of modern sequence stratigraphic concepts and high-resolution dating methods. We report the establishment of a regional sequence stratigraphic model that provides the temporal framework for further detailed sedimentological, palaeontological and geochemical studies. Preliminary results show a stratigraphic organization in four major depositional sequences (3rd order), which are broadly in agreement with the lithostratigraphic formations. The age dating is based on new nano-fossil analyses and C/O and Sr isotope stratigraphy. A subdivision into higher-frequency sequences (4th/5th order) significatively improves the resolution of the stratigraphic framework and our understanding of spatio-temporal distribution of the sedimentary facies. The four sequences are: 1) The B1 sequence (Upper Coniacian-Santonian), characterized by a transgressive phase of chalk-rich sedimentation (coccolithophore-dominated) and a regressive phase of a prograding siliciclastics with a distal transition to the first phosphorite-chert facies. 2) The B2 sequence (Lower Campanian) also starts with a transgressive chalk dominated facies and subsequently develops into a chert-dominated marl facies (radiolarian-dominated). The chert is locally associated with thin phosphates and coquinas, as well as organic-matter rich facies in proximal marine settings. 3) The B3 sequence (Upper Campanian) is also characterized by a transgressive chalk dominated facies. The regressive phase is constituted by dm- to m-thick phosphorite beds that were deposited coevally with giant oyster banks (decameter scale). 4) The B4 sequence (Maastrichtian-Paleocene) represents a dramatic facies change to organic-rich pelagic marls, and can probably be further subdivided. This sedimentary succession highlights both gradual and rapid changes in biogenic productivity and geochemistry. These changes are punctuated and partly driven by significant relative sea-level changes, and likely also larger scale palaeoceanographical processes that are the focus of future work.

The present study aims at producing diesel out of algae. The production of biodiesel was performed at Tafila Technical University laboratories. The algae were brought from Almansora stream at Tafila governorate - Jordan and afterwards dried in an oven at 80 °C for 12 hours. The dried algae were ground using disc mill until powder was obtained. The powdered algae underwent a distillation process with the addition of iron sulphate hydrate to the algae using a distillation column in order to extract the oil. Methanol was added to the oil, which was obtained from the distillation and using potassium hydroxide as a catalyst, the product was then separated in a funnel for about 10 hours until two layers of the solution were obtained; the organic layer represents the biodiesel. The biodiesel attributes are similar to the diesel oil, except that it reduces the emission of carbon dioxide CO2 and there is no emission of sulphur dioxide SO2.

Sports stars are modern-day mythical heroes, showcasing their skills on fields and courts all over the world. Their mythical status translates to their market value, which is proof of an athlete’s exceptional status. For the fans he is a hero, for the sponsors a brand, and Michael Jordan was the first one to exemplify the relation between these two apparently distinct aspects. Drawing on anthropological theories, this article presents Jordan as the culture hero – the one that has set the standards for modern-day sports stars.

Opis:
First computer database for antiquities had been introduced in Jordan at the beginning of 1990s. In following years the system was developed and changed. As a result, it became internationally acknowledged and awarded: in 2010 it was qualified as one of one hundred most promising innovations in digital technology by Netexplorateur forum; in 2014 Arches project, which developed based on experience from Jordan, was counted by Planetizen as one of ten best internet sources for planning, design and urban development in the world. The aim of this article is to present Jordanian database and the story behind it. It is interesting to take a closer look: how Jordanians managed numerous problems which occur during archaeological database creation; what were their solutions and did they fulfill expectations. Among many problems the most often and the most complex are: • precision of site location; • problem of site borders/limits/reach; • diversity in archive data; • access to database; • new data entry mechanism. The analysis of Jordanian archaeological database brought the conclusion that international acknowledgment does not have to equal to a full success. Some elements and implementation procedures are original and innovative whereas others do not seem to work. This is another aim of this article: to present solutions which have the potential of heritage protection and management improvement and those which did not fulfill the expectations. This project has been funded with support of the European Commission. The article reflects the view of the author only, and the Commission cannot be held responsible for any use which may be made of the information contained therein.

Opis:
The civil war in Syria lasts over two years and its progressing escalation indicates that its quick solution is far from being feasible. It causes numerous repercussions not only for Syria itself – by war damage and erosion of the social fabric, but also for the Middle East, especially due to direct involvement of regional actors in the conflict. Particularly vulnerable is the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan to which Syrian war constitutes a major security threat, probably the biggest one Jordan has to face in more than 40 years. The article presents the monarchy’s reaction towards the Syrian crisis and accordingly analyzes the security system of Jordan by indicating complexity and multidimensionality of threats inflicted by the war in Syria by applying the comprehensive security approach. Intensification of the military activity on ground, deteriorating humanitarian situation of the civilians and their massive influx into Jordan, a direct military threat and several dangers related to uncertain future of Syria and overload of Jordanian socio-economic system are indicated as key factors endangering the very existence and stability of the monarchy.

Opis:
The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan is now one of the most stable Arab countries. Several times in its history, however, it underwent area period of serious internal con-flicts. Jordan is a monarchy and the authority of the house of Hashemite comprises an axiom of its constitution. In 1957 and 1970 strong opposition dominated by the Palestini-ans posed a threat to the rule of the Hashemites. In 1991 the throne was not directly in danger, but the results of the Gulf War were destabilizing within the country. The article presents those three political crises and the way in which king Hussein defeated the opposition forces. The Hashemite made use of main internal divisions in Jordanian socie-ty, especially the antagonism between Palestinians and the citizens of Transjordan. This strategy has, until now, been effective.

Opis:
A comprehensive study was conducted to monitor the emission potential from solid waste landfilled in Jordan over a period of 292 days using an anaerobic lysimeter. A 30 kg waste sample reflecting the typical municipal solid waste (MSW) streams generated in Jordan was used to simulate the influence of climate on the emission potential of landfills located in semi-arid areas. The experimental results demonstrated that a significant amount of leachate and landfill gas was produced. The methane content was found to be more than 45% and the leachate produced reached 15.7 l after 200 days. However, after 260 days the gas and leachate production rate became negligible. A significant amount of heavy metal traces was found in the leachate due to mixed waste disposal. Changes in biogas and leachate quality parameters in the lysimeter revealed typical landfill behaviour trends, the only difference being that they developed much more quickly. In view of current landfill practices in Jordan and the effect of climate change, the results suggest that landfill design and operational modes need to be adjusted in order to achieve sustainability. For this reason, optimized design parameters and operational scenarios for sustainable landfill based on the country’s climatic conditions and financial as well as technical potential are recommended as a primary reference for future landfills in Jordan as well as in similar regions and climates.

Opis:
The term “geography of salvation” rarely appears in biblical theology. Occasionally, the term “sacred geography” is encountered. Yet it seems that the geography of salvation signifies much more than the sacred geography which means an arrangement of biblical events in space and their relationship with the sites. The geography of salvation, as proved in this article, implies a deliberate work of God who wanted to veil his Revelation not only in history but also in geography. It means that analysing the geographical environment of the sites related to biblical events and linking them with their function can lead to a discovery what God wanted to reveal by placing the events in the specific environment. The argumentation in the thesis was conducted on the basis of the River Jordan and its function in the synoptic Gospels against the background of the other books of the Bible. The conclusion of the article is the discovery that the River Jordan, and more precisely its geographical environment and function in the Bible, is a prefiguration of the baptismal initiation and the nature of the baptism itself.

Opis:
Cooking vessels collected during three surveys that took place in 2014 and 2015 around the ancient settlements of Abila, Gadara and Umm al-Jimal in the north of Jordan are the subject of this paper. The fragmentation and poor surface preservation of the sherds from this assemblage resulted in the study being focused on an analysis of clay fabrics in relation to vessel forms and their provenance. An examination of fabrics grouped into wares and cooking vessel forms demonstrated an apparent shift from wares produced in the region around Lake Tiberias, which had dominated at the sites of Abila and Gadara until the 4th century CE, to wares produced most likely in Gerasa. Thus, the results of pottery studies from the three sites located at the core of the Austrian Decapolis survey project shed light on the pattern of changes in regional ceramic trade in the Decapolis and adjoining regions.

On 24 February 2022 Russian forces attacked Ukraine. This attack started a war that had been going on for a year. However, before the attack the authorities in Moscow had for many years been pursuing the policy of weakening American influences. It turned out to be effective in the Middle East; Russia consolidated its alliance with Iran and supported Syrian authorities. Simultaneously, unsuccessful policy of the USA lead to weakening Washington alliances, even with such pro-American countries as Jordan. The article presents the relationship of the Hashemite monarchy with the USA and the relationship crisis. The attack of Russia on Ukraine spoiled the so far effective policy of Russia, made it weaker on the international stage, and enabled the USA to revive former alliances.

2 Kings 5:1–27 describes the healing of a foreigner, Naaman the Syrian, a high officer of the King of Damascus, by Elisha, a prophet in Israel. Naaman the Syrian suffers from a kind of skin disease called “leprosy” in the Bible. He thinks that, being rich and powerful, he is in possession of the means to get healed. He has to change his mind and his behaviour, though. He is healed when he agrees to listen to an Israelian maidservant, a slave, to the prophet Elisha, and to his own servants. When he bathes in the Jordan, he symbolically enters the Promised Land because he is healed and, at the same time, he acknowledges that Yhwh is the only Lord of the universe.

For hundreds of years Nabataean architecture has aroused admiration and attracted tourists from all over the world. Rock tombs and stone temples in Petra, as well as many other sites in the lands of southern Jordan with buildings dating back to the times when the Nabataean state existed here, are constantly exposed to unfavourable weather conditions. Also human activity frequently poses threats to the invaluable objects. For many years, the Jordan government with the international group of scientists and conservators have been trying to counteract the ongoing processes of natural degradation, as well as those caused by man. The range of threats and factors detrimental for that type of architecture is so wide that it requires not only considerable financial outlays, but also large-scale research and analyses carried out by various specialists.

An archaeozoological analysis provided insight into the food provisioning of the site’s inhabitants. Caprids (sheep and goat) and cattle made up the bulk of the animal food products. The other species present in small quantities are the dromedary, the horse, the dog, the chicken and the hare. The faunal remains offer an opportunity to collect data on animal management and consumption during this period, of which we know very little in terms of archaeozoology.

Although Nabataean Painted Fine Ware (NPFW) has been examined in light of Stephan Schmid’s chronological typology since the late 1990s, few stratified contexts with NPFW from outside Petra have been published, and none derived from contexts occupied continuously from the Nabataean through Byzantine periods. Questions remain about the dating of later dekorphases (3–4) due to a lack of contexts. This paucity is remedied, however, by Area K at Roman Aqaba/Aila, Jordan. Area K was a domestic complex, just inside the later Byzantine city wall, excavated from 1994 through 2002. Using associated numismatic evidence and imported fine wares (primarily Eastern Sigillata A and African Red Slip), this paper argues that NPFW Dekorphase 3b appeared at Aila in the second half of the 1st century CE, and Dekorphase 3c appeared shortly afterwards, around the time of the Roman annexation in the beginning of the 2nd century.

This study investigates the perspectives of young women with disabilities in Jordan, focusing on their self-regulation. 16 young women, aged 18-22, with visual (VI), hearing (HI) impairments and physical disability (PD), were recruited using a snowballing technique. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews, which were analysed thematically. Two main themes emerged where findings show that disability affects self-regulation where there was an overlap between local cultural perspectives in understanding disability of young women, disability and gender in understanding self-regulation of women with disabilities. Disability and gender also influence women with disabilities self-regulation with respect to self-learning, setting goals, self-evaluation, self-monitoring, making decisions and self-reinforcement. Findings will add to the current debate and efforts to understand disabilities in women and lay the groundwork for initiating a campaign in Jordan concentrating on the importance of self-regulation in young women with disabilities.
