The encyclical Redemptor hominis that was published 30 years ago is still a living source from which one may draw power that inspires him to reflect on the mystery of Jesus Christ as well as on the whole reality. It contains elements of Christological hermeneutics allowing to better understand and interpret the reality of God, the world and man in the light of the person of Christ. Via the mystery of Incarnation He is the hermeneutic structure of every being. It is in Him that the depth and universality of the code that interprets every individual, concrete aspect of reality (Universale Concretum), since the whole reason, natural regularity and moral norm, meaning and value that appear in the world, are integrated and brought to perfection in this one particular Logos that became a man.

Artykuł stanowi próbę odczytania na nowo encykliki społecznej Jana Pawła II Sollicitudo rei socialis w dwadzieścia pięć lat po jej napisaniu. Encyklika ta dotyczy solidarności jako zasady życia społecznego. Korzeniem tej myśli jest powstały w Polsce ruch społeczny NSZZ „Solidarność”, który inspiruje papieża do napisania encykliki o potrzebie globalnej solidarności w kontekście rosnącego podziału świata na bogatą Północ i biedne Południe. Patrząc na powyższy problem z perspektywy dwudziestu pięciu lat, w niniejszym artykule próbujemy odpowiedzieć na pytania: Czy ten rażący podział świata się zwiększa, czy zmniejsza? Czy globalizacja stała się narzędziem solidarności, czy wyzysku? Jak należ, w świetle powyższych problemów widzieć obecny kryzys finansowy dotykający bogaty świat? Artykuł ten jest więc próbą oceny globalizacji od strony etycznej. Pokazuje największe zagrożenie, jakie to zjawisko ze sobą niesie – problem delokalizacji kapitału.
The article is an attempt to read anew John Paul’s II social encyclical Sollicitudo rei socialis twenty five years after its being written. The Encyclical deals with solidarity as a rule of social life – social virtue. The article shows first the origin of the pope’s thought, who transplants the lay rule of solidarity into the ground of the social teaching of the Church. The root of that thought is the social movement ”NSZZ Solidarity” which sprang into existence in Poland and which inspires the pope to write the encyclical about the global solidarity in the context of the division of the world into the rich North and the poor South. Looking at the above problem from the perspective of twenty five years, the above article tries to answer the question whether that striking division of the world increases or decreases. Has globalization become the tool of solidarity or exploitation? How should we, in the light of the above problems, see the present financial crisis, touching the rich world? That article is then the attempt to evaluate the phenomenon of globalization from the ethical point of view, showing its greatest threat, it carries with itself – the problem of delocalization of the capital.

Opis:
This paper tries to look at the principle (virtue) of solidarity as a potential tool for overcoming contemporary dangers of social life, especially in their economic aspect. The discussion concentrates on the historical development of the social teaching of the Church in the last two decades, that is from the announcement of John Paul II's encyclical Sollicitudo rei socialis (30December 1987) until the publication of Benedict XVI's social encyclical Caritas in veritate (7 July 2009). The paper presents a comparative analysis of the two documents in question, focusing on their understanding of the concept of solidarity. Also, the paper proposes ways of its practical application as a principle that can regulate economic activities undertaken on the micro- and macro-social scale. The analysis developed in the paper also involves presenting the principles of social life and primary values as teleologically vital for the discourse within social teaching of the Church, along with the reference to the prophetic and critical aspects of that teaching, and to the change of orientation in moral theological studies it entails.

Refleksja niniejsza wskazuje na zbawcze znaczenie miłosierdzia w życiu człowieka i na związek miłosierdzia ze sprawiedliwością społeczną. Papież w nowy sposób przedstawił teologiczny i antropologiczny wymiar prawdy o miłosierdziu Bożym oraz jej egzystencjalne i społeczne konsekwencje. Bóg objawiony przez Chrystusa jest miłosiernym Ojcem, skorym do przebaczenia grzechów i dzielenia cierpienia z człowiekiem. Miłosierdzie Boże wyzwala miłosierdzie ludzkie, będąc wewnętrzną siłą do praktykowania miłości na co dzień, które winno wyrażać się moralną dojrzałością i postawą apostolstwa. Miłosierdzie zabezpiecza godność ludzką i podstawową równość wszystkich podmiotów życia społecznego. Koryguje sprawiedliwość, służąc rozwojowi społecznemu.
The article, “Prophetical nature of the encyclical ʻDives in Misericordia’ by Saint John Paul II”, shows two aspects of mercy: its salvific significance in the human life and its contribution to promote justice in the world. Thanks to the new approach, the Pope presented the theological truth of mercy with its anthropological, existential and social consequences. God, revealed by Christ, is the merciful Father, willing to forgive people and suffer with them, to give them hope and support. This truth involves Christians practicing mercy daily and it has its significance in the moral life, in the life of faith and for the evangelization of today’s world. Mercy in social life puts attention to the central place of human dignity and equality of all subjects and in this way corrects and develops justice.

The article points to the topicality of the encyclical Centesimus Annus, the third social encyclical of John Paul II, from the perspective of the 30th anniversary of its publication. The author brought to the fore the prophetic character of the encyclical as an important message for the countries of Central and Eastern Europe during the transformation period after the fall of communism, emphasizing its timelessness and topicality. Centesimus Annus became the voice of the Church, which, through the very nature of its social teaching and its prophetic and critical specificity, has the right to make judgments in social matters.
Przedmiotem artykułu jest zagadnienie aktualności trzeciej encykliki społecznej Jana Pawła II Centesimus annus z perspektywy 30. rocznicy jej powstania. Autor skoncentrował się na ukazaniu profetyzmu encykliki jako istotnego przesłania na czas transformacji dla krajów Europy Środkowo-Wschodniej po upadku komunizmu, podkreślając jego ponadczasowość i aktualność. Centesimus annus była głosem Kościoła, który zgodnie z naturą własnej nauki społecznej i jej profetyczno-krytyczną specyfiką ma prawo do wydawania osądu w sprawach społecznych.

Jan Paweł II podejmował liczne inicjatywy ekumeniczne, które stanowiły tło powstania encykliki Ut unum sint, pierwszej po Soborze Watykańskim II bezpośrednio traktującej o ekumenizmie, przez którą papież chciał ożywić dialog i przezwyciężyć kryzys ekumeniczny narastający pod koniec XX w. W artykule przedstawiono genezę jej powstania, odniesiono się do części nawiązującej wprost do posługi Biskupa Rzymu – jednej z największych przeszkód na drodze do jedności Kościoła – oraz ukazano recepcję przez wspólnoty chrześcijańskie.
John Paul II was undertaking numerous ecumenical initiatives, which were the background for the creation of the encyclical Ut unum sint, the first after the Second Vatican Council dealing directly with ecumenism, through which the Pope wanted to revive the dialogue and overcome the ecumenical crisis growing at the end of the 20th century. The article presents the genesis of its creation, refers to the part directly alluding to the ministry of the Bishop of Rome – one of the greatest obstacles to the unity of the Church – and shows perception by Christian communities.

L’8 dicembre 2018 al santuario della BVM a Gietrzwałd in Varmia (nord-est della Polonia), le parole dell’arcivescovo di Szczecin mons. Andrzej Dzięga, hanno ispirato e stimolato l’autore dell’articolo a fare almeno un primo passo ed aprire la discussione sulla questione dell’Europa, delle sue radici, della sua identità, della sua originale unità nel contesto attuale. Il tema è tanto urgente in quanto oggi appare evidente la crisi vissuta dall’Europa caratterizzata da una forte destabilizzazione culturale, religiosa, antropologica. Questo problema è stato molto approfondito da Giovanni Paolo II e dai suoi innumerevoli impegni e sforzi per ricordare ed indicare all’Europa l’unica via salutare ed efficace per tornare ad essere se stessa: il cristianesimo. A dimostrazione del suo interesse per le sorti dell’Europa, Giovanni Paolo II, nel 1980 ha proclamato co-patroni dell’Europa i santi Cirillo e Metodio, Cinque anni dopo, nel 1985,con la sua quarta enciclica, ha voluto riportare le figure di questi due santi evangelizzatori dei popoli slavi, come esempio dell’impegno profuso per l’unità e l’identità del Vecchio Continente.
December 8, 2018 in the Warmia Shrine of Our Lady of Gietrzwałd (Poland), Metropolitan of Szczecin Archbishop Andrzej Dzięga said words that became the inspiration for the author of this article to reflect on the issue of Europe, its roots, identity and unity in the current historical context. The subject seems all the more important, the more evident is the evident crisis experienced in Europe, in various areas of its life: cultural, social, religious, and anthropological. This problem was the subject of many reflections of John Paul II to the extent that the pope Pole in a determined way engaged and made great effort to show Europe that the only effective and sure way to renew the continent is to return to its sources, primarily to Christianity. An expression of his concern and activity to remind Europeans of their identity and unity was the establish 1980 of the Saints Cyril and Methodius, co-patrons of Europe. Five years later, in 1985, in his fourth encyclical, John Paul II recalled the figures of these holy evangelizers among the Slav peoples as a model of authentic and proper action for the good of Europe, the restoration of its identity and unity.

The publication shows various aspects of the prophetism of the encyclical, emphasizing its timelessness and topicality.

Na pytania o fenomen (osobliwość) życia w ogóle i znaczenie, sens życia ludzkiego nauki przyrodnicze nie znajdują wystarczającej odpowiedzi. Czy z punktu widzenia człowieka-obserwatora życia z zewnątrz lub świadomego uczestnika życia, można pomóc w tych pytaniach? Co ma do powiedzenia w tych kwestiach teologia i antropologia teologiczna, zwłaszcza w kontekście stworzenia i odkupienia osoby ludzkiej? W poszukiwaniu znaczenia życia ludzkiego i odpowiedzi na pytania o życie w ogóle ważną, adekwatną i uniwersalną odpowiedź formułuje koncepcja Ewangelii życia Karola Wojtyły – Jana Pawła II. Istotną treść tej koncepcji zawiera encyklika Papieża Jana Pawła II, pod tym samym tytułem, Evangelium vitae (Ewangelia życia). Wykład encykliki o życiu pochodzącym od Boga, danym człowiekowi od Boga i zmierzającym do życia w Bogu ukazuje prawdziwy sens życia ludzkiego.  W przejściu z biologii i metafizyki życia do duchowych cech Ewangelii (Dobrej nowiny) życia ludzkiego, które jest niepowtarzalne, wyjątkowe, nienaruszalne, niezwykłe, Jan Paweł II pozwala również na odkrycie znaczenia życia każdej istoty, każdego gatunku i formy życia na Ziemi. Kwestie te są również obecne we wspomnianej już encyklice.
Natural sciences do not find a sufficient answer to questions about the phenomenon (peculiarity) of life in general and its meaning, the meaning of human life. Can these questions be answered from the point of view of a human being, who is either an observer of life from the outside or a conscious participant in life? What do theology and theological anthropology have to say in these matters, especially in the context of the creation and redemption of the human person? In search of the meaning of human life and in response to questions about life in general, an important, adequate and universal answer is formulated by the concept of the Gospel of Life by Karol Wojtyła– John Paul II. The essence of this concept is contained in the encyclical “Evangelium vitae” (“The Gospel of Life”) under the same title. In the lecture of the encyclical on life that comes from God, is given to man from God and directs man to live in God, we find, above all, the meaning of human life. In the transition from the biology and metaphysics of life to spiritual features of the Gospel (“Good News”) of human life, which is unique, inviolable and extraordinary, John Paul II allows us to discover the meaning of life of every being, species and form of life on Earth. These issues are also present in his  encyclical “Evangelium Vitae”.

Szczególnie uprzywilejowane miejsce zajmuje tutaj Cyprian Norwid jako autor poematów Promethidion i Fortepian Szopena. Koncepcja narodów i ich dziejowej misji ma i w poezji, i w nauczaniu papieskim liczne punkty wspólne z myślą słowiańską Adama Mickiewicza (prelekcje paryskie) i Norwida. Świadczą o tym wątki wybranych homilii oraz encyklika Slavorum apostoli.
The starting point of this article is the question of whether there is a connection between the Slavic theme in the early poetry of Karol Wojtyła and the papal teaching of John Paul II addressed to the Slavic nations. The main inspirations and ideas present in Wojtyla’s juvenilia are identified through the analysis of three aspects of his poetry: the creation of the subject, the literary kinship by choice and the historiosophical ideas evoked. The results of this comparative research indicates that the author’s poetic imagination is rooted primarily in the Bible and in the works of the Polish Romantic poets. A particularly privileged place here is occupied by Cyprian Norwid, the author of the poems Promethidion and Chopin’s Piano. The concept of nations and their historical mission in the papal teaching has numerous points in common with the Slavic thoughts of Adam Mickiewicz (in his Paris lectures) and Norwid in his poetry. The threads of selected homilies and the encyclical Slavorum Apostoli testify to this.

Artykuł odnosi się do uroczystości jaka odbyła się przy kościele parafialnym w Sztutowie w dniu 2 września 1979 roku. W trakcie podniosłej religijnej ceremonii odsłonięto wówczas ufundowany przez środowisko byłych więźniów Stutthofu i ich rodzin pomnik upamiętniający 40. rocznicę pierwszego transportu więźniów do obozu. Mottem monumentu był cytat z pierwszej encykliki papieża Jana Pawła II, a jej tłem religijne przebudzenie polskiego społeczeństwa spowodowane świeżym wspomnieniem pierwszej pielgrzymki Ojca Świętego do Ojczyzny. W oficjalnym obiegu politycznym i propagandowym ówczesne władze PRL nie wspominały w ogóle uroczystości w Sztutowie. Odsłonięty wówczas pomnik stoi do dziś w Sztutowie.
The article refers to the ceremony that took place at the parish church in Sztutowo on September 2, 1979. During a solemn religious ceremony, the monument commemorating the 40th anniversary of the first transport of prisoners to the camp was unveiled by the founders- community of former Stutthof prisoners and their families. The motto of the monument was a quotation from the first encyclical of Pope John Paul II, and its religious background was the awakening of Polish society caused by the fresh memory of the Holy Father’s first pilgrimage to his Homeland. In the official political and propaganda circulation, PRL authorities of the time did not mention about the ceremony in Sztutowo at all. The monument, unveiled at that time, still stands in Sztutowo.

Święty Jan Paweł II w encyklice pt. Dives in misericordia przedstawia „duchowość miłosierdzia”, choć sam nie używa takiego określenia. Opisuje jednak tę rzeczywistość, wskazując na jej podstawy oraz przejawy. Duchowość ta streszcza się w dwóch wymiarach: poznawczym i praktycznym. Pierwszy z nich polega na poznawaniu miłosierdzia Pana za pomocą Jego objawienia zawartego w Starym i Nowym Testamencie, a w sposób szczególny – w Chrystusie i Jego misterium paschalnym. Drugi natomiast przekłada się na trzy postawy: wyznawanie, czynienie oraz wypraszanie miłosierdzia. Wszystkie one zakładają również postawę wewnętrzną w postaci wiary, ufności, nadziei i miłości względem Boga i ludzi. Ostatecznie zależą one od ich źródła, którym jest On sam. Duchowość miłosierdzia opiera się więc na przyjęciu miłości miłosiernej Ojca, objawionej i udzielonej przez Syna w Duchu, oraz życiu nią. To zaś wymaga życia w Duchu Świętym, który tę duchowość wzbudza i kształtuje.
Saint John Paul II in his encyclical Dives in Misericordia presents “the spirituality of Mercy”, although he himself does not use this term. However, he describes this reality, indicating its fundamentals and expressions. This spirituality comes down to two aspects: cognitive and practical. The first one depends on becoming aware of the Mercy of the Lord by means of His Revelation contained in the Old and New Testament, and especially – in Christ and His Paschal Mystery. The second one translates into three attitudes: professing, practising and pleading the Mercy. All of them assume also an inner attitude of faith, trust, hope and love in regard to God and people. Finally the attitudes depend on their Source, which is He Himself. The spirituality of Mercy relies therefore upon accepting the merciful Love of God the Father, manifested and given by the Son in the Spirit, and on living It. And this requires living in the Holy Spirit, who initiates and forms the spirituality.
