The article aims at showing that the philosophical personalism of Pope John Paul II (Karol Wojtyla) stems from the common sense approach to reality. First, it presents Karol Wojtyla as a framer of the Lublin Philosophical School, to which he was affiliated for 24 years before being elected Pope John Paul II; it shows Wojtyla’s role in establishing this original philosophical School by his contribution to its endorsement of Thomism, its way of doing philosophy, and its classically understood personalism. Secondly, it identifies a purpose of Wojtyla’s use of the phenomenological method in his personalism and reconstructs Wojtyla’s possible answer to the question whether there is a link between moral sense and common sense in human experience.

The article aims at demonstrating that, by his teaching on human person and his action, St. John Paul II (also known as Karol Wojtyła) implicitly contributed to a resolution of the most serious problem of contemporary philosophy, which consists in separating wisdom from love and substituting wisdom with understanding or knowledge. The author concludes that John Paul II makes a persuasive contribution to recover philosophy as the love of wisdom by (1) identifying truth in the area of freedom, self-fulfillment and conscience, and (2) appealing to man’s honesty and happiness.

The original term the ‘woman’s genius’ by St. John Paul II, contained in the letter Mulieris dignitatem and his other documents, accurately defines spirituality and the proper role of women in the Church and society. It can be a hermeneutical key when studying the figures of saints and outstanding women, including the Servant of God, Jadwiga Zamoyska. As the participation of women in the triple mission of Christ: priestly, prophetic and kingly, the ‘woman’s genius’ manifests itself in various ways. We find its fullness in Mary.

Jana Pawła II, zawarte w liście Mulieris dignitatem i innych jego dokumentach, trafnie określa duchowość oraz właściwą rolę kobiety w Kościele i społeczeństwie. Może ono stanowić klucz hermeneutyczny przy badaniu postaci świętych i wybitnych kobiet, także Służebnicy Bożej Jadwigi Zamoyskiej. Jako udział w potrójnym posłannictwie Chrystusa: kapłańskim, prorockim i królewskim, „geniusz kobiety” przejawia się na różne sposoby. Jego pełnię odkrywamy w Maryi.

Dnia 26 marca 2017 roku minęło 750 lat od kanonizacji św. Jadwigi Śląskiej (†1243). Z tej racji metropolita wrocławski, abp Józef Kupny ogłosił w metropolii wrocławskiej Rok Jadwiżański (2016–2017). W ramach obchodów zaplanowane są różne wydarzenia o charakterze religijnym i kulturalnym, odbywają się sympozja naukowe. W te rocznicowe obchody wpisuje się prezentowany artykuł Święta Jadwiga Śląska w nauczaniu św. Jana Pawła II. Kardynał Karol Wojtyła jeszcze przed wyborem na Stolicę Piotrową przebywał kilkakrotnie w sanktuarium św. Jadwigi w Trzebnicy k. Wrocławia. Zostało to omówione w pierwszej części artykułu. Święta stała się szczególnie duchowo bliska Janowi Pawłowi II, gdyż jego wybór na papieża dokonał się w liturgiczne święto św. Jadwigi, w dniu 16 października 1978 roku. Ojciec św. dawał temu wyraz w swoim nauczaniu. W drugiej części, na podstawie wpisów do ksiąg pamiątkowych i wypowiedzi papieża odnoszących się do św. Jadwigi Śląskiej, zostało omówionych siedem zagadnień szczegółowych.
March 26, 2017 marked the 750th anniversary of the canonization of St. Hedwig of Silesia (†1243). On this occasion the Wrocław metropolitan, Archbishop Józef Kupny proclaimed the Year of St. Hedwig (2016–2017) in the Wrocław metropolis. Celebrations include a variety of religious and cultural events as well as scientifi c symposia. The present article St. Hedwig of Silesia in the teaching of John Paul II falls within the scope of the anniversary celebrations. Cardinal Karol Wojtyła, even before his election to St. Peter’s Chair paid several visits to the shrine of St. Hedwig in Trzebnica near Wrocław. These visits are discussed in the fi rst part of the article. St. Hedwig became especially close to John Paul II spiritually as his election took place on her liturgical feast, on October 16, 1978. The Holy Father testifi ed to this spiritual affinity in his teaching. In the second part of the article seven detailed issues are discussed based on the pope’sinscriptions in commemorative books and his utterances referring to St. Hedwig of Silesia.

What is the significance of human dignity and self-determination in JP II’s personalism? How might JP II’s personalism serve evangelization? Findings suggest that JP II’s philosophical personalism, especially at the nexus of its understanding of human dignity and self-determination, provides a robust and faithfully Christian anthropology that can effectively inform efforts in evangelizing all persons, as all persons are image bearers of God that are necessarily self-determining and possessed of profound dignity and worth.

On the centenary of the birth of St. John Paul II, this article reflects on his legacy for moral theology by examining the enduring relevance of his 1993 Encyclical Veritatis Splendor. Against what some authors call the new morality, this papal document holds up the classical notion of morality as a realm in which we encounter the absolute, to the point that one may even be called upon  to lay down one’s life in martyrdom. As a figure of classical morality, the essay presents Antigone, who risked her life to honor her dead brother’s body. A different woman serves as a figure of the new morality: Mrs. Bergmeier, who is praised by some of the proponents of this approach for having committed “sacrificial” adultery in order to be reunited with her family. Examining the differences between these two accounts, the paper recalls the classical distinction between choice and intention. It is argued that the new morality has forgotten about the moment of choice, subsuming it entirely under the intention. In its teaching on the moral object and intrinsically evil acts, Veritatis Splendor defends the basic moral experience that we have a choice and that our choices matter.
W setną rocznicę urodzin św. Jana Pawła II niniejszy artykuł podejmuje temat jego spuścizny w teologii moralnej, badając trwałą aktualność encykliki Veritatis Splendor z 1993 roku. W przeciwieństwie do tego, co niektórzy autorzy nazywają nową moralnością, encyklika ta podtrzymuje klasyczne pojęcie moralności jako sfery, w której mamy do czynienia  z absolutem, do tego stopnia, że można nawet być wezwanym  do złożenia męczeńskiej ofiary z własnego życia. Jako postać moralności klasycznej, esej przedstawia Antygonę, która ryzykowała życie, by uczcić ciało zmarłego brata. Inną kobietą która służy jako postać nowej moralności jest Pani Bergmeier, chwalona przez zwolenników tego podejścia za to, że popełniła cudzołóstwo by móc zjednoczyć się z rodziną. Analizując różnice między tymi dwoma postaciami, artykuł przypomina klasyczne rozróżnienie między wyborem a intencją oraz argumentuje, że nowa moralność zapomniała o momencie wyboru, zaliczając go całkowicie do intencji. W swoim nauczaniu na temat moralnego przedmiotu czynu i czynów z natury złych Veritatis Splendor broni podstawowego doświadczenia moralnego – tego, że mamy wybór i że nasze wybory mają znaczenie.
Anlässlich des hundertsten Jahrestages der Geburt von Johannes Pauls II. denken wir über sein Vermächtnis in der Moraltheologie nach, indem wir die bleibende Gültigkeit der Enzyklika Veritatis splendor von 1993 untersuchen. Im Gegensatz zu dem, was einige Autoren die neue Moral nennen, hält dieses päpstliche Dokument an der klassischen Vorstellung von Moral als einer Sphäre fest, in der wir dem Absoluten begegnen, bis zu dem Punkt, an dem man sogar dazu aufgerufen werden kann, sein Leben im Martyrium hinzugeben. Als eine Figur der klassischen Moral stellt der Aufsatz Antigone vor, die ihr Leben riskierte, um die Leiche ihres toten Bruders zu ehren. Eine weitere Frau dient als Figur einer neuen Moral: Frau Bergmeier, die von den Befürwortern dieses Ansatzes dafür gelobt wird, dass sie Ehebruch begangen hat, um mit ihrer Familie wieder vereint zu werden. Der Artikel analysiert die Unterschiede zwischen den beiden Beziehungen und erinnert an die klassische Unterscheidung zwischen Wahl und Absicht. Es wird argumentiert, dass die neue Moral den Moment der Entscheidung vergessen hat, da sie die Absicht in den Vordergrund stellt. In seiner Lehre über das moralische Handlungsobjekt und die in sich bösen Taten verteidigt der Papst in Veritatis splendor die grundlegende moralische Erfahrung, dass wir eine Wahl haben, und dass unsere Entscheidungen von Bedeutung sind.

Wśród różnych obszarów tematycznych dialogu ze światem ważne miejsce w papieskim nauczaniu zajmuje dialog Kościoła z nauką. Dialog ten zasadniczo jest prowadzony, choć z różną intensywnością, od początku istnienia Kościoła, gdyż jest związany implicite z istotną dla myśli chrześcijańskiej relacją między rozumem a wiarą. Za pontyfikatu św. Jana Pawła II (1978-2005) problematyka dialogu Kościoła z nauką stała się ważnym elementem papieskiej troski i nauczania. O dużym zaangażowaniu papieża w dialog Kościoła z nauką świadczy wielość jego wypowiedzi, dotyczących różnych aspektów tegoż dialogu, wygłaszanych podczas różnej rangi spotkań z przedstawicielami nauki. Artykuł ma na celu syntetyczną prezentację wkładu św. Jana Pawła II w dialog Kościoła z nauką. Źródłem dla opracowania postawionego problemu są zasadniczo wypowiedzi papieża kierowane do członków Papieskiej Akademii Nauk, uczestników interdyscyplinarnych sympozjów, jak i okazjonalne przemówienia do ludzi nauki. Choć papieskie wypowiedzi dotykają różnych kwestii dotyczących dialogu Kościoła z nauką i najczęściej przeplatają się w jego wypowiedziach, to jednak zasadniczo koncentrują się wokół trzech: (1) uzasadnienie konieczności podejmowania dialogu Kościoła ze światem nauki; (2) jego metodologicznych uwarunkowań oraz (3) tematyki. Wymienione kwestie stanowią podstawę do wyznaczenia struktury dla prowadzonych rozważań, ukazując równocześnie konkretny wkład św. Jana Pawła II w rozwój dialogu Kościoła z nauką.
This paper will analyse the teaching of Pope John Paul II with regard to the opening of the Church towards science. This is a relevant issue to the Christian faith. Its justification is made today in a climate of scientific thinking, in which scientific tools of recognising of the world, as well as the scientific picture of the world play an important role. This article will demonstrate in sequence: (1) the need for dialogue between the Church and science; (2) the methodological considerations, and (3) topics of this dialogue. Particular attention is paid to the papal indications on general criteria of dialogue between theologians, as the representatives of the Church and scientists, as the representatives of various fields of scientific exploration.

The entire history of Europe and the awareness of a common identity formed in its course are clearly and deeply marked by Christianity and indicate a close relationship between the Church and Europe. Both in the West and in the East, the Church desires to contribute to the European Union. It feels responsible for the shape of the Old Continent and is convinced that it can also make an important contribution to the establishment of new institutional forms.In the age of pluralism and respect for all religious beliefs it is unacceptable that a tendency to discriminate against any religion should come to the fore. Since the European Union engages in dialogue with political parties, trade unions and representatives of various religions, it would be incomprehensible if the same attitude was not displayed towards Christianity.Above all, one must not ignore the transcendent dimension possessed by each human being. Indifference to this dimension may lead to tragic consequences and the European continent has seen plenty of those painful examples throughout its history. From the beginning of his pontificate, John Paul II expressed a great interest in European affairs. He showed Europeans a vision of unity in diversity, creative fidelity to Christian origins, in freedom, truth and solidarity.

This article traces the origin and content of the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church: Lumen Gentium’s chapter on Mary, which served as the focal point of the Second Vatican Council’s doctrine on the Mother of God in the mystery of Christ and the Church. The article proceeds to describe the Archbishop of Cracow Karol Wojtyla’s participation in conciliar discussions on Mary and then focuses on how Pope John Paul II embraced conciliar Mariology and reflected it in his teachings. Henryk Mikołaj Górecki’s profound personal religiousness became the source of his deep spiritual bond with the personality of Karol Wojtyła – Saint John Paul II. The relationship between the composer and the Pope was of a special nature. In 1977, Cardinal Karol Wojtyła commissioned a work from Henryk Mikołaj Górecki to commemorate the 900th anniversary of the death of St Stanislaus. The result was the oratorio Beatus Vir Op. 38, a psalm for baritone, mixed choir and orchestra. Since its premiere, the composer has been urged by the Pope to compose further works of religious music. This was to be a larger cycle dedicated to Polish saints. Only the oratorio on St Adalbert was written, the fate of which was unknown during the composer’s lifetime. Its manuscript was found in materials left behind by his son. The text of Sanctus Adalbertus is laconic, building up already at the level of words a specific drama typical of the composer. It is sung in Latin alternating with Polish (there is also a Czech variant, which is understandable given St Adalbert’s nationality), and, as so often in Górecki’s work, is based on thoughts taken from the Psalms. While the first three parts of the work can be said to be composed as a whole by ‘juxtaposing’ different sound models, different idioms repeated many times in an irregular manner peculiar to Górecki, the fourth part, with its clear three-part structure, is built in a processual manner. Górecki’s Gloria is derived, as it were, from the song Bogurodzica and tends towards it. In the maximally muted ending of the work, the melody returns, this time as if a reminder of it in the single, delicate strikes of the bells and grand piano leading to the utterance of the saint’s name: “Sanctus Adalbertus”. The work can be interpreted as a journey towards the quotation from the oldest Polish hymn – Bogurodzica (Mother of God), as a journey to the source – to the roots of a Polish national identity in times of rebirth.

While the mystical expression “to see beyond” allows John Paul II to “trace the direction” for the development of a new canonical hermeneutic, apt for assuming the great missionary challenges of the of the third millennium, the normative novelty introduced by him and the methodological direction dealt by him allow his conviction, that the Church is “a house and school of communion”, to become the programmatic force of all the structural reforms initiated by him. This reform of the Church, which is “communio Ecclesiarum”, in its communion and missionary aspects, finds its central core at the level of the relationships between the universal law and the particular law. Or rather, it is precisely the so called “corpus iuris commune” that, thanks to John Paul II’s methodological and hermeneutic direction, can redefine the specific and interactive functions existing between universal canon law and particular canon law: the first must guarantee the unity, without reducing it to uniformity: the second instead should guarantee the plurality, without falling into particularism

Opis:
Ekumeniczny program św. Jana Pawła II cechuje nie tylko wymiar horyzontalny, urzeczywistniający się w osobistych spotkaniach, w wymianie myśli i duchowych darów. Obejmuje także wymiar wertykalny, polegający „na wspólnym i wzajemnym uznaniu naszej kondycji jako ludzi, którzy zgrzeszyli”, co – według Jana Pawła II – otwiera „wewnętrzną przestrzeń, w której Chrystus jako źródło jedności Kościoła może skutecznie działać mocą swego Ducha – Parakleta” (UUS, nr 35). Nadając ekumenizmowi priorytetowy charakter w programie swojego posługiwania, Jan Paweł II zwraca szczególną uwagę na dwa elementy, które wzajemnie się warunkują. Są to: „pamięć i jej oczyszczanie oraz pojednanie”.
The ecumenical program of St. John Paul II is characterized not only by the horizontal dimension, which is carried in personal meetings, in the exchange of thoughts and spiritual gifts. It also includes a vertical dimension, consisting in “mutual and reciprocal recognition of our condition as people who have sinned,” which, according to John Paul II – opens “an internal space in which Christ as the source of the Church’s unity can effectively act by the power of the Spirit – the Paraclete” (UUS, no. 35). By giving ecumenism priority in the program of its ministry, John Paul II pays special attention to two elements. They are: “memory and its purification and reconciliation.”

Aby wiernie odtworzyć obraz rodziny nakreślony przez św. Jana Pawła II, należy wspólnie z nim zastanowić się nad źródłem, specyfiką i ostatecznym celem wspólnoty małżeńskiej i rodzinnej. Takie poszukiwania prowadzą do odkrycia szczególnej drogi, na której członkowie rodziny odnajdują Boga i żyją Nim, a przez to stają się coraz bardziej sobą. Papież bowiem podkreślał wyraźnie, że w obliczu współczesnych zagrożeń, osoba, małżeństwo i rodzina bardziej niż czegokolwiek innego potrzebują otwarcia się na tę Prawdę, która jest fundamentem ich istnienia i miłowania. W dobie obecnej debaty wokół małżeństwa i rodziny, która znalazła swój oddźwięk również w pracach Synodu Biskupów, odkrycia wymaga ciągle proroczy charakter spojrzenia św. Jana Pawła II na mał-żeństwo.
In his catechesis Man and Woman He Created Them, St. John Paul II reveals marriage and family as a sacrament of communion between God and humanity. The truth of the nuptial mystery (sacramentum magnum) and the living out of that truth in human experience (ethos) form the image of the spirituality of marriage and family. Created in the image and likeness of God and consecrat-ed in the love of Christ and his Bride, the Church, men and women live the full and fruitful gift of themselves. In this way they don’t close themselves to what’s natural, but they build the domestic Church, where they become truly themselves. The Holy Spirit permeates the spouses with the grace of the sacrament, so they can form „one flesh” and build the communion of the family, transform-ing all its members through the Eucharist, prayer and sacramental reconciliation. From this truly human love, which finds its proper measure only in union with God, grows a particular way able to lead the spouses, parents and children to their mutual sanctification.

Opis:
Among people making up the market of coins and medals in contemporary Poland are well-qualified collectors having deep knowledge about acquired objects, investors and casual collectors. Particular emotions are aroused while coins and medals devoted to John Paul II are purchased; their price frequently exceeds the real value of the item. There are a lot of places where you can buy coins and medals: bricks-and-mortar shops, online shops, auctions, markets (including flea markets) and church institutions. These items can also be bought directly from the author of the design. The Polish Mint, as the most prestigious institution producing coins and medals in Poland, has its own bricks-and-mortar shop. It is advisable to buy well-preserved objects. The particularly popular coins among collectors are the old Polish ones. Thematic groups which are collected are as follows: World War II, flora and fauna or John Paul II. There is also a lively interest in coins issued abroad. In addition, there is a  new growing trend towards collecting well-preserved circulating coins and mint error coins. Rather than paying attention to coins’ artistic values, collectors focus on their market value, the theme, the low number of the issued items and the metal from which they are made, thus the original coins or medals can be purchased for the amount not higher than a few thousand zlotys. Numerous catalogues and price lists, also regarding the papal theme, are helpful materials in compiling the collection. It must be noted that in the literature, there are no monographs analyzing the iconography of coins and medals, and their stylistic features.
Wśród osób tworzących rynek monet i medali we współczesnej Polsce są wykwalifikowani kolekcjonerzy, posiadający zgłębioną wiedzę o pozyskiwanych obiektach, inwestorzy lub też przypadkowi zbieracze. Szczególne emocje podczas zakupu dzieł do kolekcji budzą monety i medale poświęcone św. Janowi Pawłowi II, których cena nabycia często przekracza rzeczywistą wartość przedmiotu. Miejsc, w których można kupić te przedmioty, jest wiele: sklepy stacjonarne lub internetowe, aukcje, giełdy i targi staroci, instytucje kościelne lub bezpośrednio u autora projektu. Mennica Polska, jako najbardziej prestiżowa instytucja produkująca monety i medale w kraju, dysponuje sklepem stacjonarnym. Wskazany jest zakup przedmiotów w możliwie najlepszych stanach zachowania. Wśród kolekcjonerów popularne są niezmiennie monety i medale dawnej Polski. Zbierane są grupy tematyczne jak: II wojna światowa, flora i fauna czy Jan Paweł II. Zainteresowaniem cieszą się również numizmaty emitowane za granicą. Do nowych trendów kolekcjonerstwa zaliczyć można pozyskiwanie monet obiegowych w doskonałych stanach zachowania, a także tzw. destruktów menniczych (monety błędnie wybite). Kolekcjonerzy większą uwagę zwracają na wartość rynkową przedmiotu, tematykę, niski nakład, kruszec, z którego je wykonano, niż na walory estetyczne, stąd unikatowe tzw. medale autorskie można nabyć za kwoty nieprzekraczające kilkuset złotych. Pomoc w kompletowaniu zbioru stanowią liczne katalogi i cenniki, także dotyczące tematu papieskiego. W literaturze naukowej brak jest opracowań analizujących ikonografię monet i medali oraz ich warstwę stylistyczną.
