Opis:
The earliest mention of Jews in Szadek dates from the early 16th century, but it was in the second half of the 18th century, that this nationality group became more numerous and started gaining prominence in the socio-economic life of this town. In 1913, every third resident of Szadek (2.8 thousand inhabitants at that time) was Jewish. The majority of trading was carried out by Jews – there were 34 shops run by Jews, and only 7 were kept by Catholics. During the Second World War most of the Jews from Szadek were put to death in a concentration camp in Chełm on the River Ner; the few who survived the occupation soon emigrated. Almost no material trace has remained of this nationality group, which had for centuries been an important component of local community, in terms of both socio-economic and cultural development. The only material evidence, being a memorial to the Jewish community in Szadek, is a Jewish cemetery, recently restored after post-war devastation.

Opis:
In the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th, many Jews belonging to high society and undertaking freelance occupations began to assimilate with their usually Christian environment. This was often a necessary prerequisite (also legally) for their social advancement. Nevertheless, their assimilation was rarely complete. In most cases, it was only partial and concerned clothes, everyday habits and education. The change in religion did not become a mass phenomenon in either Europe or America – quite the opposite. This limited assimilation was testament to the Jewish attachment to their religion, regardless of the centuries-long life in the Diaspora. Although numerous changes had occurred in the world, many of the rules respected by Jews throughout history remained valid. For instance, in their hierarchy of importance, education remained higher than wealth

Opis:
This article is devoted to Polish historiography of the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries concerning the Extermination of Jews and Polish-Jewish relations. It presents the works of both Polish historians and representatives of other scientific disciplines published in Poland and abroad and the Polish translations of foreign scientists’ works. Nevertheless, the article is mainly focused on the output of Polish historians because their contribution thereto is the greatest. Since the end of the 20th century, many works devoted to the Extermination of Jews to a greater or lesser extent have been published. These include both works giving the general outlook of the preparatory measures and mechanism of extermination of the Jewish population during the II World War and regional studies concerning the extermination of Jewish population in individual regions or localities in Poland under German occupation. The biographies of persons who affected the lives of thousands of people (not only the perpetrators of crimes but also the employees of Jewish administration) have been published, too. The latter has given rise to a discussion among historians as to the attitude of Jewish leaders towards their fellow-citizens and the invader’s authorities. These publications also depict issues related to various activities undertaken by the Jewish authorities (both civil administration and ghetto police), which have been discussed by Polish historians. One of the continuous concerns of Polish historians is the issue that has been studied since the end of the German occupation (penal liability of the perpetrators of crimes, the functioning of ghettos, extermination camps, labour camps and concentration camps, and the lot of Jews who were kept and murdered there). Only recently the issues pertaining to the Jewish resistance movement and the economic factors determining the Extermination of Jews in Poland under German occupation have become the subject matter of discussions and verifications. Since the end of the 20th century, Polish historiography has been much more focused on Polish-Jewish relations during the German occupation. However, studies and articles concerning this issue certainly do not exhaust the subject. Polish historiography is still searching for answers to questions concerning diversified attitudes of the Polish society towards Jewish population during the Holocaust and factors that determined these attitudes. The review of various research concerning the Extermination of Jews and Polish-Jewish relations at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries accomplished by Polish historians, which is presented in this article, shows that many new documents, memoirs and reports became then the subject matter of scientific examination and analysis, and matters that had long been ignored or consistently not mentioned for different reasons started to be discussed.

The Jews and Armenians inhabiting the Poland of days gone by had much in common, despite their different beliefs. Previous research has, however, devoted little attention to this problem, and even when it has the discussion has not been entirely objective. In recent times, the problem was discussed by Krystyn Matwijowski and Nadzieżda Bańczyk and Karina Mkrtczian. While in the last twenty years studies on the history of Jews have been thorough, the history of Armenians has to a large extent been neglected by Polish historiography (with the exception of the works of M. Zakrzewska-Dubasowa and K. Stopka).

The subject of this article is an analysis of the image of Jewish identity in the novel Mi nombre es Jamaica by José Manuel Fajardo. A compari son of two variants of this identity presented in the novel reveals the reasons of differences between them. Historical circumstances have re peatedly disrupted generational continuity in the process of shaping Jewish identity, therefore, the attempts to reconstruct it may differ de pending on the person who undertakes them and on the purposes they are intended to serve. The vision of a Jewish identity in a person who has experienced generational continuity is significantly different from the vision of a person who, having no such experience, had to construct the identity himself.

Opis:
This article discusses the question of neophytes’ return to Judaism, especially the case of Jan Filipowicz, who was condemned to death for this crime in 1728 in Lwów. The return of Jewish converts to their religion of origin was a relatively frequent occurrence in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, but those charged with this crime, especially Jews from Lwów accused of persuading the neophytes to return, were not usually treated as harshly as Filipowicz. The exceptionally harsh sentence given to the rabbis responsible for the return of Filipowicz to Judaism resulted from the judges’ belief in the existence of a ritual of dechristianization, a special blasphemy against Christianity. The relationship of the courts and the Church in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth to the problem of apostasy among converts from Judaism is addressed. The penitential practices described in the court documents are similar to those described by the inquisitor Bernard Gui in the fourteenth century and to the ritual of dechristianization described by Jan Serafinowicz, the most famous eighteenth century convert.

I argue that in interwar Greece there was a small yet influential of anti-Semitic anticommunists, whose centre and main area of interest was Salonica. I attempt to demonstrate that their ideas were not a particular Greek phenomenon- rather these intellectuals and activists distanced themselves from traditional forms of Greek anti-Semitism. On the contrary, their appearance was part of a panEuropean phenomenon triggered by the October Revolution in Russia, and facilitated by the ensuing immigration of the defeated Whites. This ideology should be understood within the context of the Ottoman imperial collapse, the ensuing relocation of populations and the anxiety of Balkan nationstates to ensure their national frontiers

Homecoming. A case studyThe study concerns the homecoming story of a Jewish Holocaust survivor, Szlomo Himelfarb, who returned to his home town of Solec on the Vistula, and his murder by local policemen. It is based on the material of so-called sierpniówki [testimonies given in 1944–1946 before summary courts for the prosecution “of fascist crimes against the civilian population and traitors of the Polish Nation”]. In conclusion, the author points to other cases of murders committed immediately after the war in Iłża (Starachowice) County.

The article deals with the question of film as a source of historical knowledge using the example of how Jews were treated in American society in the 20th century and how this was reflected in films. His analysis suggests that there is a clear correlation between historical events of this period and the frequency and manner of portraying the dilemmas of the religiously and culturally separate Jewish minority in the United States. But this is not a one-sided relationship, as films not only reflected this social issue, but also influenced American attitudes towards the Jewish minority. Although the question of the role played by films in historiography requires further, wider investigations, the article clearly shows that with certain caution, films can be treated as a source of historical knowledge, and especially on the social attitudes of the era.

Different Jewish thinkers were interested in Jesus since antiquity. But until the modern times they had spoken about him very little and rather negatively. In the sixteenth century a new stage of this interest appeared because several Jews began to look at Jesus with widely opened eyes. They were ready to know critically Jesus on the basis of Christian sources. This paper presents view of Solomon ibn Verga, Abraham Farissol, Jehuda Karmi, Leo Modena, Baruch Spinoza and Jacob Emden. In this way they showed that a profound communication should precede any formal dialogue between Judaism and Christianity.

Praca odnosi się do roli, jaką odegrali Żydzi w dziejach Ostrołęki. Historia Żydów ostrołęckich to zaledwie 140 lat – od zezwolenia zaborczych władz pruskich na wejście do miasta do nakazu okupacyjnych władz hitlerowskich, by opuścili Ostrołękę. Historia ta ma jednak własną specyfikę i swoisty koloryt.
The articule refers to the role of Jews in the history of Ostrołęka. It is only 140 years of the Jewish history in this town – from the permission of the annexationist Prussian authorities to enter the town until the order of occupational Nazi authorities to leave Ostrołęka. However, the history of Jews has its own specificity and peculiar tone.

Social-Cultural Association of Jews in Poland
ghetto uprising in Białystok
Opis:
Białystok, which before 1939 was known as an important centre of Jewish life in Poland, in the years to follow – because of the war – stopped to be a Jewish hub. The majority of those citizens of Białystok who had survived the Holocaust, decided to abandon the ruined city which evoked bad memories. They were leaving the city gradually and, due to this process and the decisions of the communist authorities, the activities of Jewish institutions were languishing. After 1950 in the city there were fewer than 200 people who identified themselves as Jews and some of them still intended to leave the country. A department of the government-controlled Social-Cultural Association of Jews in Poland and (until 1954) a denominational congregation constituted the only still functioning Jewish institutions. The most important goal of the Jewish community was to organise celebrations commemorating subsequent anniversaries of the ghetto uprising in Białystok (1943). Limited cultural and self-helping activities were also conducted. The local Jewish community ceased to exist after 1968, when a considerable number of Polish Jews was forced to emigrate. Those who remained were mainly elderly people, who did not conduct any social activities. In the 1970s almost all of the still existing traces of Jewish presence in the city were obliterated. When, in the next decade, a wave of renewed interest in the Jewish culture came, not very numerous Poles were involved in Białystok.
