Opis:
Thé Society for Protection of the Monuments of the Past, formed in 1906, exercised an extremely important role in preservation of Polish historical monuments in the Russian sector of partitioned Poland (where there did not exist a state conservation service) and also after Poland’s liberation in 1918. The Society assisted effectively the then scarce number of conservators, its activities having been conducted in many different lines: surveys and photographing of historical monuments, scientific research, elaboration of the methods of conservation, issuing of opinions and carrying out of conservation work on a large scale •— with regard to both the monuments of architecture and movables o f historical value, organization of exhibitions and scientific sessions, issuing of extensive catalogues and other publications. The Society was divided into a few sections all of them headed by experienced specialists, architects, artists, historians o f art, connected mostly with the Department of Architecture of the Warsaw College of Science and Technology. The seat of the Society was Baryczka House in 32 Old Town Market Square, Warsaw, where there was to be found the Society’s collection o f iconographical materials, libry and museum. The Society was dissolved by the Nazi occupation authorities in 1939 but its collection of the works of a rt saved due to the selfless efforts o f its former members. The Society for Protection o f Historical Monuments, formed in 1973, and referring to the tradition of its predecessor, commemorated the seventieth anniversary of the formation o f the Society for Protection of the Monuments of the Past by having organized a formal session in Warsaw on October 21, 1977.

Opis:
The first conservations started in this country already within the early period of the newly formed political and social system. On August 30, 1945 an extensive programme of activities in this field has been formally approved; as a consequence of unprecedented losses suffered by cultural heritage in Poland the necessity emerged to rebuild the key elements of the country’s culture. In the 1960’s the interest of practicizing Conservators' and restorers Was chiefly focused on protection of historical monuments that have survived and only in recent years may foe observed some signes o f return to practices from the early years after the country's liberation. No doubt, however, that a good deal of experience gathered during the thirty years of activities greatly contributed to development of both theoretical and practical knowledge of those dealing with conservation and restoration. In 1972 once again was established the post of Chief Conservator to make the skilled care of architectural and townplanming monuments more effective. The ranks of conservators and restorers undertaking their work in 1944—1945 were extremely scarce, however, they were growing systematically with the passing time and now some deficits are to be noted only in the government conservation services. Unlike in early post-war years, when the restoration and conservation were carried out by various working teams and companies, at present they are realized by a state-owned company known as The Ateliers for Conservation of Cultural Property entrusted with almost monopolistic rights and active not only in this country but also abroad. Contributions made by that Company to restoration of entire urban centres and especially of ancient palaces, castles and sacred buildings were quite enormous. Acting since January 1962, being the date of its establishment, the Historical Monuments Documentation Centre, Warsaw is responsible for specialized publications, collecting of information and giving as extensive as possible aid to conservators and restorers. An undisputable merit of Polish conservators consists in publication, since 1948, of a quarterly “Protection of Historical Monuments” and of a series known as the “Library of Museums and Historical Monuments Protection”. Both popularity and interest in conservation were most vivid in 1945—1955 but in the 1960’s some stagnation prevailed; at present the situation improved which the fact may be evidenced by appearance of numerous publications, organization of an all- country action called „The Monuments are awaiting their owners” and the establishing of the Society for Preservation of Cultural Property. As is well known fact the foreign professional circles are highly appreciating our achievements in art of conservation and the Polish conservators have deserved a wide reputation.

Opis:
Thorough research into town houses was initiated during the first half of the twentieth century, the period of the first modern studies dealing with the urban development of old towns (the most extensive investigations were conducted in Lvov, Warsaw and Cracow). The investigations encompassed an analysis of particular town houses as well as their complexes perceived from the viewpoint of the history of architecture. Scientific investigations conducted at the time inspired the conservation of old town houses, which entailed reconstruction of wartime devastation, the recreation and rebuilding of transformed parts of buildings, and the conservation of historical townhouse complexes as well as a reform of the development of the lots. A number of town houses in Lvov, Cracow, Warsaw, Toruń, Vilno and several smaller centres was subjected to conservation. Greatest importance was attached to the façade and rendering its spatial configuration more legible, without, as a rule, due attention paid to the development of building lots. Conservation entailed the repair and conservation of elevations and, sometimes, of particular details (masonry or ceilings). Upon certain occasions, the conservation of interiors led to the removal of secondary divisions and rendering the historical outfitting of the interiors more legible. Upon other occasions, old town houses were arranged in a contemporary mode. Such reconstruction was carried out in a historical spirit (arbitrary compositions of neo-Renaissance, neo-Baroque, Neoclassical and modern elements). The town houses were also granted a contemporary modernist outfitting which referred to stylised historical forms. The work conducted at the time frequently exceeded the binding theory of the history and conservation of architecture, and the applied solutions were repeated after the second world war when they probably influenced the conception of reconstructing the townhouse development of historical cities. The article analyses research focused on old town houses, conducted in Poland up to 1939, and the trends of reconstruction after World War I. The author went on to consider the conservation of historical buildings, focusing on their range and applied methods, and presented the most important conservation undertakings of the period. The last discussed issue is the problem of modern architecture adjoining historical town houses, widely considered at the time.
