Opis:
Sudan is a country divided into two parts - the North and South. The domestic wars between South Sudan and the government in Khartoum, which have lasted since gaining independence in 1956, as well as a still lasting conflict in Darfur, led to creation of the biggest group of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in this country. The IDPs have emigrated from South Sudan to North, most often to the suburbs of Khartoum. It is estimated that over 5 million people have escaped from the South to the North so far. In the whole history of Sudan the differences between those two regions have deepened. The differences resulted from marginalization of the South and attempts of the government in Khartoum to arabisate and islamizate the whole country. The most important criterion of division in Sudan is religion. In South Sudan live Christians and worshipers of animist religion, Islam, on the other hand, prevails in the North. In camps for IDPs from South discrimination because of lighter colour of skin and different religion is still visible. The Southerners are strangers in their own country.

The purpose of this essay is to present the impact of the Russian – Ukrainian confl ict on the situation of people living inside the area of military operations in the east of Ukraine. The key issue is to highlight the predicament of Internally Displaced Persons, the scale and geography of the phenomenon of forced internal migration, as well as actions taken by the Ukrainian authorities and international organisations towards resolution of the problem of IDPs. According to the latest data, in Ukraine there are over 1,7 million people who had registered as internally displaced. However, in total over 2 million people had to abandon their homesteads. Many of the aforementioned persons live in extraordinarily harsh conditions, and since majority of those are elderly and ailing, they are highly reliant on the help of others.

Internally Displaced Persons
Opis:
Violent crises orchestrated by the activities of an Islamist extremist group in Nigeria, Boko Haram, besides resulting in the destruction of lives and properties in many communities in North East, Nigeria, contribute significantly to mobility of languages. A vast number of survivors who fled from the volatile areas inadvertently moved to different refugee camps designated by the Nigerian government as Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps. Given the fact that the linguistic ecology of North East Nigeria is extremely diverse, the situation where people from diverse linguistic backgrounds co-habit in camps under austere conditions would yield to some sociolinguistic issues including language politics and language endangerment, among others. The IDP camps attract the attention of international agencies such as UNHCR and national groups who send their representatives for sundry purposes. The language of the visitors is often a global language, English, whereas the displaced people in the camps are from diverse linguistic backgrounds with Hausa as the most popular language. In this situation, some persons in the camp are bound to encounter some language and communication challenges. Using some principles from Ecolinguistics, this study examined the linguistic repertoires of people living in some selected IDP camps in North East Nigeria. The instrument for data collection were interviews, observation and focus group discussions. The information from the study highlights the challenges of the traumatized persons who are grappling with communication challenges, the diverse sociolinguistic issues derived from the linguistic practices and the precarious situation of the languages on the move. The information from the study directs attention to the current trends in the bustling linguistic ecology of Nigeria and the need to take proactive measures to maintain the rich cultural heritage.

EU’s eastern border
Opis:
International public opinion, especially European one, is focused on the issue of migrants reaching Europe from the Near East. Due to the scale of migration, southern neighborhood draws attention of decision-makers and the public of individual EU member states. For some countries, the number of migrants has become a problem of social nature (e.g. approximately a million migrants reaching Germany in 2015). However, the fact that a war rages on in Donbas, right beyond the EU’s eastern border, cannot be disregarded as the conflict fosters further migration problems (internal and international migration). Russo-Ukrainian conflict in Donbas has changed the perception of Ukraine’s internal situation. The conflict pertains not only to the issue of hard security (e.g. military capabilities), but touches upon soft security as well i.e. in this case, the issue of migration (both international, and one associated with Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs). It is noteworthy that events of the Euromaidan revolution resulted in one of the more violent transformations, not only in the post-Soviet space, but also continental Europe. In addition, Russia’s destabilization of eastern Ukraine and annexation of Crimea undeniably constitute the greatest European security crisis since the Balkan war of 1990s. Undeniably, when faced with economic, military and social problems (e.g. IDPs), Ukraine will not be able to manage the situation on its own without external financial aid.
