Opis:: The purpose of this article is to present selected sources to the history of Latgale in the years 1561-1600, the earliest period of the membership of the former Livonia to the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Currently the records are stored in the archives and libraries of Riga, and Vilnius cities. Latgale, one of the major contemporary historical regions of Latvia, since the late 17th century was called the Polish Livonia, but within the borders of Poland stayed to 1772. The article discusses selected sources stored in the Latvian State Historical Archives (Latvijas Valsts vēstures arhīvs) in Riga and in the External Archives of the City Council of Riga (Rīgas Magistrate Arejais Arhīvs), as well as the National Library of Latvia (Latvijas Nacional Library). Characterized were also fonds stored in the Lithuanian State Historical Archives (Lietuvos Valstybės istorijos archyvas) in Vilnius and the former Wróblewski Library (Lietuvos mokslų akademijos Vrublevskių library) in Vilnius. Moreover, there was discussed the fate of public and private archives and libraries that had in their holdings sources to the history of Latgale in the last forty years of 16th century that within the 19th and first half of the 20th century were dispersed or destroyed. The attention was focused on the selected archives and libraries of Polish-Livonian nobility. Furthermore, there was discussed the holdings and fate of the Daugavpils municipal archives that was almost completely destroyed in the late 18th century.

Bolesław Limanowski
Opis:: Polish Livonia was the little homeland of Boleslaw Limanowski, a socialist and a popular political activist. The author reminisces about it in his Memoirs and in his correspondence reviving the past – both private and the history of the region (his work about Emilia Plater). Limanowski’s statements, because of his highly detailed observations, are the source of the history of the province and character of its customs. They also reveal a private side of the evolution of the author’s views. His accurate remarks connected with the peculiarities of the identities of Poles living in Livonia, especially their relationships with Russians, enabled the reader to think about the uniqueness of the author’s thoughts and his sagacity.

Opis:: W zbiorach Biblioteki Uniwersytetu Lwowskiego zostały odnalezione listy Gustawa Manteuffla do Aleksandra Semkowicza. Ich wartość polega na uzupełnieniu „białych plam” w biografii polsko-inflanckiego barona w zakresie jego współpracy z redakcją lwowskiego „Kwartalnika Historycznego” oraz z galicyjskimi historykami polskimi. Korespondencja ta przynosi informacje, jak technicznie rozwiązywano problem przekazywania periodyku do kraju, w którym był on zakazany. Co więcej, listy Manteuffla rzucają też światło na jego relacje z rosyjską cenzurą. Na uwagę zasługuje również krótka wzmianka na temat czasów studenckich Manteuffla w Dorpacie. Until recently, little has been known about the cooperation of baron Gustaw Manteuffel (1832–1916), an outstanding chronicler of Polish Livonia, with the Kwartalnik Historyczny, published in Lwów (L’viv, Lemberg). Manteuffel’s letters to Aleksander Semkowicz have recently been found in the collection of the Library of the University of L’viv. These are especially valuable as they will fill the gaps in the biography of the Polish-Livonian baron. One such gap is his cooperation with the editorial staff of the Kwartalnik Historyczny and Polish historians from Galicia. The correspondence sheds light on such matters as the way in which the periodical was smuggled into the country, where it was forbidden, and Manteuffel’s relations with Russian censorship. There is a brief mention of Manteuffel’s student years at Tartu.

Opis:: Polish literature devoted to the role of the Poles in shaping Latvian culture presents unanimity as far as the positive role and results of this influence are concerned. However diametrically opposite Latvian perspective particularly clear in the first years of the existence of independent Latvia needs to be highlighted here. Contacts between the Latvians and Poles and their cultures differed in different parts of Latvia since the beginning of the Polish presence in this country. The period called ‘the Polish times in Latvia’ in Latvian historical sources lasted the longest in Latgale (1561-1772), i.e. in the so called Polish Livonia. The Polish influence on Latvian folk culture was the strongest there. This period, especially the scale of the influence of Polish culture on Latvian native culture as well as general development of this region, was strongly criticized by numerous Latvian historians. The interest of the Polish noblemen in developing Latgale was subjected to criticism, too. Considering these lands as their own the Poles were not interested in propagating national ideas among local village people who, according to the Polish nobles, were to succumb to complete polonisation. Great influence of the Polish nobility on culture, economy and creating the national identity of the Latgalian Latvians, the policy of the Polish clergy and polonisation of the local people resulted in a negative opinion of the Polish influence in the Latvian lands. The study is an attempt to outline the issue which Polish researchers have not paid attention to so far. Nevertheless, regarding rich material it needs detailed research on a large scale.
W literaturze polskiej poświęconej roli Polaków w kształtowaniu kultury Łotwy panuje jednomyślność co do pozytywnej roli i skutków tych wpływów. Nie można jednak pomijać milczeniem istnienia diametralnie różnej perspektywy łotewskiej, która szczególnie wyraźnie zarysowała się w pierwszych latach istnienia niepodległego państwa łotewskiego. Od początku obecności Polaków na Łotwie kontakty Łotyszy z Polakami i ich kulturą różnie wyglądały w poszczególnych regionach Łotwy. Okres, nazywany w historycznych źródłach łotewskich „polskimi czasami na Łotwie”, najdłużej trwał właśnie w Łatgalii (1561–1772), czyli w tzw. Inflantach Polskich. Tam też zauważalny był największy wpływ kultury polskiej na ludową kulturę łotewską. Okres ten był negatywnie oceniany przez wielu historyków łotewskich. Krytyce poddawana była skala oddziaływania kultury polskiej na rodzimą kulturę łotewską, a także na ogólny rozwój ziem dawnych Inflant Polskich. Negatywnie był też oceniany udział szlachty polskiej w rozwoju Łatgalii. Uważając te ziemie za swoje, nie była ona zainteresowana krzewieniem idei narodowych wśród miejscowej ludności chłopskiej, która, według możnowładztwa polskiego, już w niedługim czasie miała ulec całkowitej polonizacji. Ogromny wpływ inflanckiej szlachty polskiej na kulturę, gospodarkę, a także na kreowanie tożsamości narodowej łatgalskich Łotyszy, programowe działania duchowieństwa polskiego oraz polonizacja miejscowej ludności przyczyniły się do negatywnej oceny wpływów polskich na ziemiach łotewskich. Przedstawione opracowanie jest próbą naszkicowania zagadnienia, któremu dotychczas badacze polscy nie poświęcili większej uwagi, a które to ze względu na bogaty materiał wymaga szczegółowych i szeroko zakrojonych badań.

Opis:: Polish Livonia is the most culturally diverse region in Latvia. Many organizations which work here, they try to uphold the traditions of national minorities. In the article discusses the organizational activities of the Polish minority in Latgale region. The study also shows the educational activities of Poles in the Republic of Latvia. In the research used a sociological method of in-depth interviews with the leaders of Polish organizations. The purpose of the interviews was to know the opinion of the most active and the most competent group of activists.
Inflanty Polskie stanowią najbardziej zróżnicowany kulturowo region Łotwy. Działa tu wiele organizacji, starających się podtrzymać tradycje mniejszości narodowych. W artykule omówiono działalność organizacyjną mniejszości polskiej w Łatgalii. Ukazano także działalność oświatową Polaków w Republice Łotewskiej. W badaniach wykorzystano socjologiczną metodę wywiadów pogłębionych z liderami organizacji polskich. Celem wywiadów było poznanie opinii najaktywniejszej, a jednocześnie najbardziej kompetentnej grupy działaczy.

The poet was born in Vilnius and she spent her youth in Polish Livonia (now Latvia) which topography played a crucial role in her literary work. The loss of this “little homeland” contributed to the specific creation of the country of her childhood. Livonia and Lithuania became for the author of The Lithuanian Nightingale the source of both idyll and pain; the peculiar Way of the Cross. In her works the poet mourns and recalls the lost homeland. She also tries to persuade the warring nations to forgive and make peace. She prays for the disappearance of the borders.

Opis:: Dzieje konfesji luterańskiej w dawnych Inflantach Polskich (łotewskiej Łatgalii) są zagadnieniem bardzo słabo rozpoznanym. Niewielkie zainteresowanie tą kwestią, niezwykle frapującą chociażby z racji położenia Łatgalii i jej funkcjonowania na pograniczu kulturowym, jest przede wszystkim efektem poważnego zdekompletowania bazy źródłowej i jej silnego rozproszenia. Niniejszy tekst ma na celu ukazanie w ogólnym zarysie losów łatgalskiego luteranizmu w okresie, w którym tzw. Inflanty Polskie należały do państwa polsko-litewskiego (1561–1772). Szczególny nacisk położono na relacje luteranów z katolikami, którzy w tzw. czasach polskich mieli w Łatgalii uprzywilejowaną pozycję.
History of Lutheran confession in the former Polish Livonia (Latvian Latgale) is very poorly investigated. Minor interest in this matter, which is fascinating due to Latgale location and its functioning in the cultural borderland, is mainly the effect of a serious decomposition of the source base and its strong dispersion. This text is aimed at showing a general outline of the history of Latgale Lutheranism in a period, when the so-called Polish Livonia belonged to the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (1561–1772). Particular emphasis is put on Lutherans’ relations with Catholics, who had a privileged position in Latgale in the “Polish times”.

Opis:: A little recognized to date collection of letters of the renowned Poznań bookseller and editor Jan Konstanty Żupański to Józef Ignacy Kraszewski preserved In the Jagiellonian Library can valuably complement the story of an excellent book by the eminent Polish-Livonian historian, Baron Gustaw Manteuffel (1832–1916). In 1869, Manteuffel published in Riga a book Polnisch Livland [Polish Livonia], which came to interest Polish readers, including Józef Ignacy Kraszewski. The famous novelist encouraged the Polish‑Livonian author to publish his work also in Polish. This correspondence, related in part to preparing Polish publication (Inflanty Polskie, Poznań 1879) brings a lot of interesting details, most importantly concerning its editorial form and technical questions involved, including that of making prints for Manteuffel’s work by graphic artists from Leipzig. The letters indicate also the changing attitude of the Poznań bookseller to the planned publishing project.

Opis:: W artykule omówiono album Terra Mariana. 1186–1888, sporządzony w jednym egzemplarzu i przekazany papieżowi Leonowi XIII przez polsko-niemiecką szlachtę bałtycką. Album ten jest źródłem informacji i artystyczną opowieścią o historii chrześcijaństwa w Liwonii, a szczególnie w Inflantach Polskich. Znaczną część artykułu poświęcono twórcom księgi, przede wszystkim Gustawowi Manteufflowi. Zaprezentowano także sylwetki inicjatorów wydania faksymilowego w XXI w., które wraz z księgą naukowych komentarzy stanowi niezaprzeczalną wartość dla historii i księgoznawstwa Łotwy. Powołano się na wspólną historię Łotwy i Polski oraz przedstawiono omawiane dzieło jako przedmiot dalszych badań.
The article discusses the album entitled Terra Mariana. 1186–1888, of which a single copy was prepared and handed over to Pope Leo XIII by the Polish -German Baltic noblemen. The album is a source of information and an artistically crafted story about the history of Christianity in Livonia, and especially in Polish Livonia. The bulk of the article is devoted to the creators of the work, above all to Gustav Manteuffel. The article also presents the figures of the initiators of a 21st century facsimile edition, which along with a book of scholarly commentaries constitutes an undeniable contribution to the history and book science of Latvia. Reference was made to the common history of Latvia and Poland, and the work in question was presented as an object of further research.
