Opis:
Our Hope is Christ but His Mother is also ours. A difficult topic in the dialogue with Anglicans is the issue of Mariology. Mary and the various forms of liturgical and non-liturgical Marian devotion were inherited by Anglicans from the Catholic tradition. However, the influence of the Reformation has also had an impact on this topic. Hence, paradoxically, Mariology links and -at the same time- constitutes an element of polemics between Anglicans and Catholics. The Anglican doctrine about Mary of Nazareth mentions the term “complexion oppositorum”. The ecumenical Dialogue has shown us its present situation, as we can read in these pages. The authors, after presenting a historical introduction, made a presentation of all existing ecumenical documents being the fruit of Catholic-Anglican dialogue, in which there was any mention of the Mother of God. Documents at international level as well as documents from national dialogues, in particular from the USA and Canada, have been analysed.

Opis:
Not everybody realizes that besides architectural monuments built in the previous century Łódź also owns a wonderful example of modern painting. Hidden in the neo-Gothic church dedicated to the Assumption of the Holy Virgin Mary the picture of Our Lady is one of the oldest artistic works in the town. In its long history the painting was given various titles: starting from the Dolorous or Glorious, through the Immaculate, Assumed, Merciful, to even being taken by some people for a copy of the picture of Our Lady of Ostra Brama. However, it is most often referred to as Our Lady of Bałuty, or just Our Lady of Łódź. In the work the history of the church and of the painting were followed, with paying special attention to separating legends from facts. Attempts were made to prove that the opinion about the painting in the Łódź church being a copy of the picture from Ostra Brama is unjustified; it is only the same iconographic type. It represents painting that is relatively rarely encountered in art. The bust of Mary without the Infant, with her hands crossed on the breast, expresses several truths about the Virgin. It is a sort of synthesis of three iconographic motifs: the Immaculate Conception, the Annunciation and the Assumption. The way to announcing the dogmas of the Immaculate Conception and the Assumption was especially turbulent and the process lasted from the beginnings of Christianity. Undoubtedly these truths are linked with each other. By the Assumption we also worship Mary's Immaculate Conception. Artists created paintings and sculptures presenting mariological truths. However, the iconography of these dogmas was similar, or even identical. This resulted from the very fact that they co-existed, as well as from their relatively late announcement by the Pope. The picture of the Immaculate Virgin was often changed and the moment of the Assumption was emphasized. The element that connected these two dogmas was the scene of the Annunciation, in which Mary's fiat united the Immaculate Conception, the virginal maternity and the divine Assumption of God's Mother. This is why the way of presenting Mary in the scene of the Annunciation is analogical to the pictures of the Immaculate Conception or the Assumption, in which Mary's gesture is significant: it is touching the heart or joining her hands in prayer. It is also important that Mary is presented without the Infant, owing to which the painting joins the group of scenes in which the artists had to show a composition of God's Mother without Jesus, but in spiritual communion with God the Father. The painting of God's Mother in the church dedicated to the Assumption of the Holy Virgin Mary in Łódź closely connects the Immaculate Conception to the Assumption, and also, owing to the specific position of the hands – to the Annunciation. The very fact that in Łódź since 1364 there has been a parish with such a dedication as well as the connection between these dogmas had effect on formation of such an image of God's Mother. Probably this iconographic type is derived from the Netherlandish graphic arts of the 16th century, that gradually passed to Eastern Europe. This is the way that the model could have reached Poland. The picture of God's Mother in Łódź is not a copy of the painting from Ostra Brama. They both represent a similar iconographic type, and what follows from it, they are presented in a similar arrangement. However, there are too many elements that are different to say it is a copy. It is not known who was the painter and from what school he came. He undoubtedly knew the works of Netherlandish and Italian masters, which is proven by the way Madonna was painted. There are no documents speaking about conservation of the painting, which makes it impossible to date the work precisely. It is possible that it was founded by Paweł Łódź Kubowicz in 1639, as in 1718 it was already considered miraculous.

catechesis about Mary
Opis:
The work presents the analysis of seven papal catecheses delivered during Wednesday audiences in 1996–1997. The Pope points out important events from Mary’s life and refers to the Holy Scripture, documents of universal councils, his pastoral teaching as well as the teachings of his predecessors and of the Church Fathers. The Assumption is presented as an act resulting from the action of God’s Providence and the culmination of the earthly life of the Mother of our Savior. The work is divided into four basic parts. The first one examines Mary’s holiness during her earthly pilgrimage and explains such terms as: Hail Mary, daughter of Zion, full of grace, totally holy. He presents not only God’s intervention in the life of the Mother of Jesus but also in the history of Zechariah and Elizabeth. We can conclude that everything we note about Mary comes from grace and not from merits. We can include here e.g. the Immaculate Conception. The second part introduces us into an old theological discussion concerning the sense of the Mother of God’s death. The Pope says that the Mother of God died because Christ died as well. He poses a question: What sense could the death of the Mother of God have since the death of her Son had salvific meaning? It is interesting to observe the use of the words “could have” in this part of the catechesis which provides some space for a discussion about the participation of Mary in the work of redemption. It is interesting that in the description of the Assumption dogma a word “resurrection” is not used. The third part focuses on the act of Assumption itself. We can see that the truth about the assumption of Mary was noticed in the first centuries due to her maternity and the love connecting the Son and the Mother. Another important factor is to present this dogma in the context of Mary’s participation in the Passion of our Savior. Here one can find many reasons why Mary of Nazareth passed – like her Son – after death to life. The other reason is her Immaculate Conception and the privileges resulting from it. All those elements suggest and facilitate our understanding of the plan of God’s Providence. The fourth part presents Mother of God’s intercession in everyday Christian life, we can see Mary’s role and her cooperation in her Son’s redemptive work. This collaboration is based on the actualization of evangelical virtues: obedience, hope and love under the influence of the Holy Spirit. In the order of grace Mary is John’s mother but also ours. The maternity of Mary encourages us to get to know the Word of God better and gives us courage in our ministry.

Opis:
The purpose of this article is to show Marian dogmas in their relationship to Scripture as a testimony of revelation and to Tradition. In the first part, the author clarifies Ratzinger’s account of the relationship between the uniqueness of revelation in Christ and its continuity, as well as the links between Scripture preserving the “once for all” of revelation with Tradition, in which revelation is always present. The second part addresses the question of the Church’s memory, in which the Holy Spirit, guiding to all truth, also revealed the Marian aspect of revelation. Furthermore, the dynamic concept of Tradition demanded by the promulgation of the Marian dogmas of 1854 and 1950 is presented. In the last and most important part of the article, the author extracted from the work of the Bavarian theologian those contents of Mariology which, originating from the seeds of the inspired texts, shed light on the “once” of revelation and its testimony in Scripture. The example of Marian dogmas serves the purpose of outlining the creative though strained relationship between the two poles of revelation: uniqueness and continuity.
