    Przedmiot niniejszych rozważań stanowi jedna z wielu posług o charakterze transportowym świadczonych przez ludność poddaną na rzecz panującego i jego urzędników na ziemiach dawnego państwa polskiego. Podwoda (podwód) polegała na dostarczeniu koni, z których korzystał przede wszystkim król ze swoją małżonką oraz osoby, którym jedno z nich poleciło dostarczyć konie podwodne (np. posłańcy królewscy), przy czym obowiązek świadczenia tego rodzaju powinności był często zamieniany na rodzaj czynszu (podwodne, podwodnie) składanego w zamian za powinność odbywania i dostarczania podwód. Analiza przeprowadzona przez Autora dotyczy zagadnień związanych z regulacjami prawnymi w zakresie obowiązku podwodowego w świetle postanowień XVI i XVII-wiecznych uniwersałów i konstytucji zawartych w zbiorze najdawniejszych praw państwa polskiego.
    The article discusses one of the many transport services provided by serfs for the benefit of the ruler and his officials on the lands of the former Polish state. Podvoda (the podwód) consisted in supplying horses, which were used mainly by the king with his wife. They were also used persons to whom one of them ordered to supply podvoda horses (e.g. royal messengers), while the obligation to provide this kind of obligation was often changed into a kind of rent (known podwodne or podwodnie) paid in exchange for the obligation to carry out and provide podvodas. The analysis conducted by the Author concerns the issues related to legal regulations in the field of the podvoda duty in the light of the provisions of 16th and 17th century universals and constitutions contained in the collection of the oldest laws of the Polish state.

    This article aims to contribute to the growth of reflection in the area of theory of local governance and the research on the practices of the local governments in the era of the Polish- Lithuanian Commonwealth. The issue at hand has been analysed from two research perspectives. Under one view – naturalistic – the local government is seen as a social phenomenon and as an institution whose primary function is to represent the society. Under the other – state-related approach – the local government is a construction rooted in the state’s legal doctrine. The article uses a historical outlook to discuss the evolution of the aristocratic governmental institutions. At the same time, when the theoretical and praxeological perspective is adopted, the role of the local government in the structure of the state is discussed, with its diversified attitudes towards the identification of sources for development of the government with its dynamics, and helps observe decentralization processes taking place. The issues scrutinized in the article have been approached from the historical, sociological, political and systemic perspectives. The author takes into account the changes taking place in local government and in the state-level government of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The narrative of the article employs the problem-oriented, chronological method. Temporal divides introduced in the article are justified by the series of systemic, legal, social, economic and cultural changes, which significantly influenced the rise, functioning and the demise of the institution under analysis.

    Opis:
    Reading Ottoman-Polish diplomatic relations leads to a clear conclusion that in the late 18th century, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth had an opportunity to enter into an international alliance as a partner alongside the Ottoman Empire. Topaktaş has not attempted to create hypothetical scenarios regarding the survival or otherwise of the First Republic, but has reconstructed the idea of an Ottoman-Polish alliance in a scholarly manner, drawing on a rich body of historical sources. The publication contains innovative insights from the fields of history, political science and international relations. It takes into account the latest state of research and the results of searches personally conducted by the author. Topaktaş has almost managed to avoid factual mistakes and errors. The scale of the research apparatus used and the high specialisation of the technique of the historian of Polish-Turkish relations makes this monograph a work complementary to the diplomatic relations between the Republic of Poland and the Ottoman Empire. The reader is presented with a convincing argument alternating with a narrative that gives the impression of a reportage on the journey and stay of Franciszek Piotr Potocki - all wrapped up in academic terminology. The author has accomplished the research goals declared in the introduction. I personally believe that Topaktaşs book is a groundbreaking and inspiring treatise on the late 18th century. It is worth recommending to enthusiasts of Ottoman studies, but also to students of history interested in the subject.

    In seinem ersten Teil versucht der Artikel, die Entwicklung nachzuvollziehen von der multiethnischen Struktur der Ersten Rzeczpospolita hin zu einer national wie religiös fest umrissenen Definition des ,Polentums‘ in der Zeit der Teilungen. Auf diesen historischen Grundlagen werden die Konflikte erörtert, zu denen die verschiedenen Perspektiven der Erinnerung an die deutschen Verbrechen des Zweiten Weltkrieges immer wieder führen. Da das polnische Identitätskonstrukt der Romantik maßgeblich von religiösen Überhöhungen geprägt ist, schließt sich eine Betrachtung an über die Unterschiede im Verständnis des Messianismus im Judentum und im Christentum. Zum Schluss versammelt der Beitrag einige Aspekte der gegenwärtigen Wiederbelebung der Erinnerung an die jüdische Kultur in Polen.
    W swojej pierwszej części artykuł próbuje śledzić rozwój wielokulturowej struktury I Rzeczpospolitej do narodowo-religijnie ściśle określonej definicji ,polskości‘ w czasach rozbiorów. Wychodząc z tych historycznych uwarunkowań, rozważa się konflikty, do których prowadzą różne perspektywy wspomnień o niemieckich zbrodniach podczas II Wojny Światowej. Ponieważ polska romantyczna konstrukcja tożsamości przede wszystkim cechowała się silnym religijnym ładunkiem, w następnej części artykuł traktuje o różnicach w rozumieniu mesjanizmu w religii żydowskiej i chrześcijańskiej. Na końcu zebrane zostały pewne aspekty współczesnego odradzania się wspomnień o kulturze żydowskiej w Polsce.  
    In its first part the article tries to describe the process leading from the multiethnic structure of the First Republic of Poland to the definition of ,polishness‘ in terms of national and religious identity in the period of the partitions of Poland. On this historical background an analysis is provided to elucidate the conflicts in which several perspectives of memory concerning the German crimes during World War II come to expression. As the Polish romantic concept of identity is characterized by religious contents, the following part deals with the differences in the understanding of Messianic idea in Christianity and Judaism. The article closes with an overview of some aspects of the recent revival of memory about the Jewish culture in Poland.

    In the sixteenth century the three terms “law”, “liberty” and “respublica” became intertwined in a broader conception of a well-ordered political community, civitas libera, which was seen as the only guarantee of liberty and the public good. For the authors who belong to the tradition of classical republicanism, one of the central questions concerned the nature of the conditions that need to be fulfilled in order to meet the requirements of civil liberty and political obligation. Unlike modern political philosophers who have introduced the language of rights, they understood civil freedom as being one of the benefits derived from living under a well-ordered government – res publica for the attainment of which virtue was of crucial importance. This article focuses on the Polish republican discourse of the sixteenth century that was preoccupied with these questions.
