Ten ichnogenera and seven ichnospecies are described from the Czarna Shale Formation, possibly representing the Terreneuvian and Cambrian Series 2 of the Holy Cross Mountains. Moreover, five other ichnotaxa are described in open nomenclature. Phycodes circinatus,Taenidium isp., Trichichnus linearis and ?Dictyodora isp. are described from the Cambrian of the Holy Cross Mountains for the first time. The stratigraphic ranges of Trichichnus linearis and Phycodes circinatus are extended. The trace fossil assemblage and associated, sedimentological features point to deposition in the upper and lower offshore. Periodic, anoxic events may have occurred on the sea bed.

No Vendian or lowermost Lower Cambrian deposits have yet been encountered in the Holy Cross Mts. and Nida Trough. The Cambrian of the Holy Cross Mts. is represented by Lower, Middle and Upper Cambrian deposits, containing both macro- and microfossils. The Lower Cambrian begins with deposits containing a non-trilobite fauna that does not allow precise age determination. The overlying Cambrian deposits are subdivided on the basis of trilobite faunas. Unfortunately, the species are often endemic, and correlation with the Scandinavian biostratigraphic scheme is limited.

The palynology of the Cambrian claystones and mudstones of the Góry Pieprzowe Shale Formation in the southern part of the Łysogóry region (Holy Cross Mts., Poland) are described. These deposits had been referred to the Middle Cambrian of the Paradoxides paradoxissimus and Paradoxides forchhammeri Superzones. Here, rocks from 10 shallow drillings and several exposures in the Opatów region have been examined. Scarce and poorly preserved acritarch assemblages contain several forms that are indicative for the Upper Cambrian, while the genera Acanthodiacrodium, Cymatiogalea, Stelliferidium, Trunculumarium, Nellia, Impluviculus, Calyxiella, and Veryhachium excludes the possibility of a Middle Cambrian age. Rather, these forms suggest the Upper Cambrian, most probably its middle and upper part. The occurrence of the rocks of this age to both north and south of the Łysogóry quartzite outcrops indicates tectonic repetition of the geological structure in the Main Range of the Holy Cross Mountains.The dark colours of palynoflora from the Pieprzowe Mountains in Sandomierz are identical with the colours of the Cambrian microflora from the Łysogóry region, and differ from the bright colours characterising organic matter in the Kielce region of the Holy Cross Mountains. This suggests a tectonic relation of the Pieprzowe Mountains with the Łysogóry region rather than with the Kielce region, as hitherto thought.

Additional data on the Lower Cambrian ichnotaxa from the Holy Cross Mountains are presented. Nine ichnotaxa are described for the first time from the area, additional descriptions of three known ichnotaxa are supplied, and two ichnotaxa are shown to have extended stratigraphic ranges. Most Lower Cambrian trace fossils belong to the Cruziana ichnofacies. The high taxonomic diversity of the Early Cambrian trace fossil assemblages from the Holy Cross Mountains in comparison to the trace fossil assemblages of the Mid- and Late Cambrian of the area is confirmed.

The Ociesęki Sandstone Formation represents the Holmia-Schmidtiellus and the Protolenus-Issafeniella zones. Seven ichnospecies of Rusophycus, including Rusophycus exsilius isp. nov, are recognized in this formation. Moreover, Rusophycus ispp. A, B, C are recognized. The diagnoses for R. dispar, R. crebrus and R. magnus have been emended and the stratigraphic range of R. versans has been extended. The presence of Rusophycus dispar may suggest a palaeozoogeographical connection between the Małopolska Block, the Baltica palaeocontinent and the Laurentia palaeocontinent.

Rock samples from four boreholes and three exposures located in the southern peripheries of the Holy Cross Mountains in Poland, from strata representing the lower Cambrian Czarna Shale Formation have been studied palynologically. A relatively numerous and well-preserved lowermost Cambrian microfloral assemblage corresponds to coeval associations known from different palaeocontinents. Our new data enables reinterpretation of the biostratigraphy of the Czarna Formation, a thick rock unit basically devoid of macrofossils. The rocks analysed represent the Terreneuvian and comparison with other lower Cambrian successions indicates the middle and upper part of this oldest Cambrian series. The discovery of Variosphaeridium gen. nov. supplements information about the diversity of lowermost Cambrian microfloral assemblages. The Fimbriaglomerella membranacea–Globosphaeridium cerinum Assemblage Zone is introduced; it has a transitional character between the Asteridium tornatum–Comasphaeridium velvetum and Skiagia ornata–Fimbriaglomerella membranacea assemblage zones distinguished by Moczydłowska (1991) and identified on most Cambrian palaeocontinents.

Opis:
Deposits of the Cambrian Series 2 and 3 of the Holy Cross Mountains, comprising sandstones, and silty and clayey mudstones, are located on the Małopolska Block which is part of the Trans-European Suture Zone. Most recent geophysical data point to the proximal nature of this structural element with regard to the Baltica palaeocontinent. The trilobite assemblages are dominated by Ellipsocephalidae, generally accompanied by Holmiidae in the lower part, and by Paradoxididae in the upper part of the studied interval. They display a significant evolutionary trend, correlatable with the development of contemporary assemblages in Avalonia and Gondwana rather than those of Baltica. Discrepancies between the basement affinity and the dominant trilobites may be explained by the influence of strong larva-carrying currents from Avalonia and Gondwana.

Quartz arenites and wackes with intercalations of silty shales of the Ociesęki Formation were analysed in small outcrops and one core. The succession contains about forty-three ichnogenera and seventy-four ichnospe- cies, among which thirty-three ichnogenera and fifty-three ichnospecies are described by present author. The formation belongs to the Schmidtiellus-Holmia Superzone and to the Protolenus-Issafeniella Zone. Most strata are totally bioturbated. The diverse and numerous trace fossils represent the Cruziana ichnofacies in the lower part of the formation and the Skolithos ichnofacies in the upper part. A few possibly new ichnospecies of different ichnogenera have been described in open nomenclature. Sedimentary structures and trace fossil assemblages indicate that the older part of this formation was deposited on the upper offshore to lower shoreface, while its younger part was deposited on the lower to middle shoreface, where storm episodes were the main factor controlling sedimentation and the activity of benthos. The trace fossil associations studied are similar to those from the lower Cambrian in many places around the world. The ichnoassociations from the Polish part of the East European Platform and from Sweden, which represent the Baltica palaeocontinent, display the closest similarity.

Previous works on arthropod trace fossils from the Furongian (Upper Cambrian) section exposed at theWioeniówkaWielka quarry (Holy Cross Mountains, Poland) focused on trilobite-made structures referred to as Rusophycus polonicus and Cruziana semiplicata. Arthropod trackways did not receive much attention. The present paper contains preliminary data on new records of arthropod trackways from the Furongian of the Wioeniówka Wielka section and on their taphonomy. The material studied comprises undetermined arthropod tracks and specimens belonging to three ichnogenera: ?Asaphoidichnus, Diplichnites and Petalichnus.

On a basis of tectonic mesostructures, the pre-late Tremadocian tectonic event (Sandomirian “phase”), believed to account for deformation of the Cambrian system in the Kielce Unit (Holy Cross Mts., Central Poland), has been subdivided into 3 successive tectonic episodes of different kinematics. During the first stage (D1), flat, westerly vergent thrusts originated, giving rise to gravitational sliding. Subsequently, during D2, the entire sequence was imbricated by the northerly vergent thrusts. In the terminal phase (D3), map-scale folds developed, changing inclinations of previously formed structures.Mode of deformation during the D2 stage is typical for thrust and fold belts. Absolute dating of these events remains speculative, but the pre-late Tremadocian age of the D1 and D2 phases is evident. The D3 is considered as a continuation of the D2, but alternative concepts are also acceptable in the light of the presented data.

Opis:
Enrolled specimens of trilobite species Strenuella polonica, partly preserved within their escape structures and burrows from the Cambrian Series 2 Ociesęki Sandstone Formation, are described. The specimens are interpreted as buried during storm episodes. Their occurrence in a few horizons, the presence of non-bioturbated tempestites with combined wave-current ripples and groovemarks interbedded with bioturbated beds suggest a depositional environment between normal and storm wave base. The trace fossils Monomorphichnus and some Rusophycus have been interpreted as structures formed during the storm when animal tried to take refuge. Well-preserved syndepositional Rusophycus and its different taphonomic variants are discussed. The part of the Ociesęki Sandstone Formation studied is interpreted as deposited on a lower shoreface with storm influence.

Amongst the materials collected from the Cambrian outcrops in the Holy Cross Mountains by priest professor Włodzimierz Sedlak, there is a holotype and only specimen of Helcionella polonica, as well as a rock fragment with casts of medusoids on its surface. We decided to revise these materials for their importance to discussions on the early molluscs’ size and the medusae fossil record; as well as for the critical nature of previously published revisions of taxa erected by Sedlak.

Four tectonic deformation events are recorded in the Middle Cambrian rocks from Kamecznica Podmąchocicka. The D1 event took place in Cambrian and originated from tremor. Its structural record includes synsedimentary folds and seismites. The D2–D3, and most probably also D4, events resulted from progressive deformation produced by tectonic compression initially from NE and then NNE direction. Folding was accompanied by green facies metamorphism, which resulted in development of phyllites. Composition and characteristic deformations of minerals suggest that they were produced in temperature ranging from 300ş to 400şC and differential pressure above 1.7 kbar (170 MPa). The combined deformation and metamorphism resulted in three generations of foliation — S1 to S3 defined by crenulated cleavage planes. New blasts of quartz, small scale muscovite (sericite), chlorites and sporadically biotite grew within these cleavage planes. Deformations and metamorphism took place after the Middle Cambrian, but before the Late Silurian. It is indicated by presence of the quartzitic sandstone pebbles in the Miedziana Góra Conglomerates.

The southern slope of Łysica Mountain, which is the highest elevation of the Holy Cross Mountains, is comprised of three lithological complexes divided by parallel fault zones. The uppermost part of the succession consists of quartzitic sandstone of the Wiśniówka Formation. The formation is underlain by a complex of sandstone with mudstone interbeds, with black claystone underneath, which is exposed in the upper part of the Glęboczka ravine succession. The strata of the first and the third complexes dip northward, whereas those of the second complex dip southward. In the fault-bound zone between the second and the third complexes, there are concentrations of weathering iron ore. The black claystone, which is lithologically similar to this of the Pepper Mountains Formation, contains a taxonomically rich assemblage of organic-walled microfossils (acritarchs) diagnostic of the Upper Cambrian (Lower Furongian) successions. The new record of microfossils allows determining the age of the succession composing the Łysogóry Mountains for the first time in the history of regional geological investigation.
