    The aim of this paper is to analyse the shift of the representational and narrative paradigms of Holocaust memory in the Balkan films that belong to two genres – of melodrama and historicalfiction. The hybrid format positons the Holocaust (hi)stories – already caught between forgetting and remembrance – on the unstable ground between trauma and nostalgia; between history and memory; or facts and fiction. The “regained visibility of the Holocaust grant us access” to Balkan past and present and oblige us to investigate the convergence of the history and the memory into Holocaust master narrative of the Holocaust.“Bringing the dark past to light” in cinema has manifold effect. First, the Balkan wave of Holocaustfilms, with its mixed generic performances, offers new answers to the traditional issues of, both, the ethics of memory and the ethics of representation. Second, the analysis of five films reveals that the trauma from the past – resisting the closure – has the potential to powerfully resonate in the present day political crises. Re-dressing the trauma of the past, the films present the future violence while fulfilling “the Holocaust dictum ‘never forget’”. Eventually, new representational paradigm gives consistency to the Balkan (hi)stories of the past and coherence to the identity in the present.

    This article draws on the well-known assumption in Trauma and Holocaust Studies that the representation of traumatic episodes that have affected a huge number of people is usually an aporetic phenomenon. In the case of the Holocaust, the portrayal of these horrible events is always linked to some ethical and historical limits that try to avoid its trivialisation. The first part of this study provides an overview of the evolution of the literary representation of the Holocaust and of the main controversies that have always surrounded the narration of this episode. Then, this evolution will be related to the current „memory boom” and confessional culture that has invaded the cultural panorama, which in the case of the Holocaust has been manifested in the emergence of new hybrid testimonial narratives and the overuse and even commodification of such a traumatic episode. My main contention is that these complex questions have reached the educational context too and thus, the worlds of history, literary criticism and education seem to collide to challenge the future generations’ answers to the Holocaust. All these ideas are finally exposed in a practical exercise that could be carried out in the classroom to discuss whether or not there are textual differences between various testimonial genres, and to figure out how the Holocaust can be kept alive ethically. It will contribute to supporting my closing argument that education has acquired an extremely relevant role within the field of Holocaust Studies, becoming the new site where its meanings and possible representations may be fruitfully negotiated.

    Mutually illuminating planes: the silent and the distant in J.S. Foer’s 'Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close'The paper offers an analysis of sub-renting relations in J. S. Foer’s Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, which are put in the context of the author’s debut novel Everything Is Illuminated. I suggest that the two novels shed light on, or “illuminate”, each other. The writer, a descendant of Polish Jews, precisely stratifies the novels and intertwines two planes: the explicit and the implicit (encoding signs of the Jewish plight), which are also the two planes of the protagonists’ identities. Oświetlające się plany. Ciche i dalekie w „Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” Jonathana Safrana FoeraArtykuł koncentruje się wokół zagadnienia sublokatorstwa w powieści Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (polski przekład: Strasznie głośno, niesamowicie blisko) Jonathana Safrana Foera. W refleksji o żydowskiej kondycji sublokatora (w oryginale: the renter) autorka nie pomija debiutanckiej powieści Amerykanina, Wszystko jest iluminacją. Stawia tezę, że oba dzieła wzajemnie się oświetlają. Pisarz, będący potomkiem polskich Żydów, precyzyjnie stratyfikuje powieść i nakłada na siebie dwa plany, będące także planami tożsamości głównych bohaterów: wyrażony i domyślany (szyfrujący znaki żydowskiego losu).

    In this paper, the author emphasises that the events of the twentieth century, in particular the Holocaust, are (post) traumatic not only for a particular nation but for humanity in general. Any denials only confirm the deep collective and cultural footprint of the horrific experience the mankind has gone through. An attempt is made here to analyse the memories of Martha Goren (Winter) by using the psychological concepts of M. Hirsch, C. Caruth, J. Lacan, D. Laub, R.J. Lift on, D. Taylor, Sh. Felman, S. Freud. The author, who was born in Chortkiv in 1935 in the family of a Jewish lawyer and pharmacist, tells the readers of her experience in the face of horrors of the Holocaust. According to the article’s author, the writing is one of the most effective ways to find release because the victim’s becoming the author enables her to distance herself from the experiences as she contemplates a time of horrific events. By using the technique of exact writing, Martha Groen avoids descriptions of her own feelings and emotions. Thus, one of the important post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms is a defence mechanism that shuts down an emotion (the so-called numbness effect). A number of problems that the Jewish girl has encountered in her life are identified in the text: self-identity problems, the survivor syndrome, and the post-traumatic stress disorder. All of these collective and cultural traumas overlapped and amplified each other.

    The article is devoted to sui generis tropology of memory of the Shoah that can be discovered in Piotr Sommer’s poetry. In the works by the author of Pamiątki po nas, such memory is coded by means of discrete literary devices, but it seems to be an important source of experience written down in the texts. The author endeavours to construct a dynamic, internally varied model of the Sommerian “memorial poem”; her arguments are supported with notions taken from the theories of memory and its representation influential in contemporary humanities.
    Artykuł poświęcony jest swoistej tropologii pamięci o Zagładzie, jaką odkryć można w poetyce Piotra Sommera. W twórczości autora Pamiątek po nas pamięć ta kodowana jest za pomocą dyskretnych zabiegów literackich, ale zdaje się stanowić ważne źródło zapisanego w tekstach doświadczenia. Autorka próbuje skonstruować dynamiczny, wewnętrznie zróżnicowany model Sommerowskiego „wiersza memorialnego”, precyzując wywód pojęciami zaczerpniętymi z istotnych dla współczesnej humanistyki teorii pamięci i jej reprezentacji.

    W artykule zaanalizowano teksty polskich autorów Igora Ostachowicza i Sylwii Chutnik oraz rosyjskiego pisarza Andrieja Turgieniewa (pseudonim Wiaczesława Kuricyna), zrodzone perspektywę postpamięci, wcześniej czy później odsłaniającej i wypełniającej „białe plamy” – przez poczucie, że adekwatny dyskurs nie został wypracowany lub też istniejący już dyskurs nie funkcjonuje. Teksty literackie odnoszą się do tej części traumy historycznej, która nie została dostatecznie przepracowana albo została wyparta ze względu na haniebny lub przynajmniej nieheroiczny charakter doświadczenia, co uniemożliwia włączenie go do wielkiej narracji. Głównym pytaniem, na które stara się odpowiedzieć autorka artykułu, jest psychologiczno-artystyczny powód posługiwania się groteską, sarkazmem, czarnym humorem w odniesieniu do tematów sakralizowanych przez samą skalę ludzkiej tragedii – doświadczenie Holokaustu i oblężenie Leningradu.
    The article analyzes the texts of the Polish authors Igor Ostachowicz and Sylvia Chutnik and the Russian writer Andrei Turgenev (the pen name of Vyacheslav Kuritsyn), generated by post-memory perspective, sooner or later revealing and filling the «blank spots», through the feeling that an adequate discourse has not been worked out or the existing discourse «doesn’t work». The literary texts refer to the part of historical trauma that was not (at all or sufficiently) worked through, was repressed because of its shameful or, at least, non-heroic nature, which prevents the inclusion of this experience into the «big narrative». The main question that the author of the article is trying to answer concerns the psychological and artistic reasons for using grotesque, sarcasm, and black humor when referring to topics sacralized by the very scale of human tragedy – the experience of the Holocaust and the Siege of Leningrad.
