The paper discusses the distribution of salinity and of dissolved non-organic salts of nitrogen and phosphorus (nitrates, nitrites, ammonium, phos;hates) in the surface waters of the Gulf of Gdańsk after the flood wave passed in the IIIrd decade of July 1997. It was found, by comparing with data obtained in the past years, that the summer flood wave did not cause large changes in the amounts of the investigated biogenic substances in the waters of the region.

Since many years, in the Gulf of Gdańsk various transformations proceeding under the influence of trophic and pollution-induced factors are observed. Changes of especially negative character were found in the biocenosis of the Puck Bay, in which many plant and animal sets became degraded or even devastated. Besides, at present the public feels endangered by bacterial pollution of the coastal zone and increasingly intensive phytoplankton blooming. This limits the possibilities of using these water areas for the needs of tourism and recreation. It was decided that comprehensive activities should be started, both on land and in the Bay itself, in order to limitlremediate the effects of eutrophication of this water area. In 1994 and 1995 monitoring and experimental investigations were carried out. In effect a system for protecting and restoring the biocenosis was developed, and the main assumptions for this system are presented in this paper.

Intense rain in the south em part of the Vistula 's watershed in Ju(v 2001 resulted in floods in many places and in flood water flows on the Vistula and its tributaries. The culmination of the flood reached the Gulf of Gdańsk in the night of 5th August 2001. In the period 4th to 6th August, 10 samples of water were taken, and d1e content of biogenic substances and of other components in these samples was determined. Basing on water flow measurements and on the content of the investigated components, the loads were calculated and compared with mean multi-annual loads for the pen·od 1984- 1998. It was found that the mean biogen load, related to water flow, was exceeded many times. Also the relationships between the analysed components, water flow and variability during the period of investigations were detennined. Obtained results show that there may be a very significant influence of biogens on the condition of the environment and on the dynamics of biocenotic processes of the Gulf of Gdańsk in the period before and after the propagation of flood waters of the Vistula.

The research area is located on the coast of the Baltic Sea, along the Gulf of Gdańsk. It includes a beach where sand replenishment was carried out in 2019. The aim of the study was to investigate the morphodynamics of beach deposits in replenishing and non-replenishing areas during one year. No environmental dynamic conditions sufficient to alter significantly the beach morphology and sediment characteristics occurred during the study period, November 2019 to August 2020. One storm event was recorded, but did not significantly affect the beachform. The transverse beach profiles, which were artificially recharged in June 2019, were lowered by 0.6 to 1.2 m. The greatest changes were caused by the erosive activity of the waters of the Jelitkowski Stream.

Opis:
Bottom structure of the basins in the Port of Gdynia, Poland, was analysed based on the archival materials of the Department of Operational Oceanography of Marine Institute in Gdańsk, particularly seismic profiles and macroscopic descriptions of sediment cores. Seismic profiling and core collection were performed in selected basins and within the fairway. The rich source material was used to draw a detailed bathymetric map of the bottom of the basins, a map of surface sediments, and a synthetic geological cross-section. A considerable variation in bottom depth within the analysed basins was observed. Bedrock sediments comprised Miocene sands and silts covered with glacial and fluvioglacial sediments, which reach the surface of the water, especially in the central part of the fairway. Within the eastern part of the fairway, fluvioglacial sediments are covered with marine sediments related to the Littorina transgression. Within the inner port and in the outport, a series of glacial and fluvioglacial sediments are covered with a thick (about 10 m) series of glaciolacustrine and lacustrine sediments, which in turn is covered with fluvial and deltaic sediments. The surface of the bottom is composed of contemporary, anthropogenically modified sediments. The map of surface sediments of the bottom corresponds to the geological map on the horizon of about 10 meters beneath land surface.
W ramach opracowania budowy dna basenów portowych Portu Gdynia wykorzystano materiały archiwalne Zakładu Oceanografii Operacyjnej Instytutu Morskiego w Gdańsku, tj. profile sejsmiczne oraz opisy makroskopowe rdzeni osadów. Profilowanie sejsmiczne oraz pobór rdzeni wykonano w wybranych basenach oraz w obrębie podejściowego toru wodnego. Bogaty materiał źródłowy posłużył do opracowania szczegółowej mapy batymetrycznej dna basenów, mapy osadów powierzchniowych oraz syntetycznego przekroju geologicznego. Stwierdzono znaczne zróżnicowanie głębokości dna w obrębie analizowanych akwenów. Osady podłoża to piaski i muły mioceńskie, na których zalegają osady lodowcowe oraz wodnolodowcowe wychodzące – zwłaszcza w centralnej części podejściowego toru wodnego – na powierzchnię. W obrębie wschodniej części toru wodnego na osadach wodnolodowcowych zalegają osady morskie związane z transgresją litorynową. Na obszarze portu wewnętrznego oraz w awanporcie seria osadów lodowcowych i wodnolodowcowych przykryta jest miąższą (około 10 m) serią osadów jeziorno-lodowcowych i jeziornych, na których zalegają osady o charakterze rzecznym i deltowym Powierzchnię dna budują osady współczesne, zmienione antropogenicznie. Mapa osadów powierzchniowych dna odpowiada mapie geologicznej na poziomie około -10 m.

The complexity of glacial sequences may increase when these formed underneath ice sheets despite subsequent changes in their extent that are accompanied by alterations in the direction of the ice flow. Our aim was to determine whether or not changes in ice sheet dynamics during the Late Weichselian are also recorded in sediments formed north of the area of its fluctuating margin (i.e., where the ice sheet prevailed independent of such fluctuations). It is shown that in these areas such a record could have occurred, as documented by results of till studies at Babie Doły. The examination was carried out using several analyses: lithofacies properties of sediments, petrographic till composition (fine gravel fraction, indicator erratics), till matrix CaCO3 content, till fabric, as well as orientation of striae on the top surfaces of large clasts. In parallel, datings of sub- and supra-till sediments using the TL method were carried out. The basal till at Babie Doły represents almost the entire Upper Weichselian, but it can be divided into subunits whose features indicate different ice flow directions and debris supply. The lower subunit developed as a result of the palaeo-ice stream along the main axis of the Baltic Sea (from the north), expanding to areas adjacent to the depression of the Gulf of Gdańsk. The upper subunit developed when the influence of the palaeo-ice stream in the study area decreased, the main role having been taken over by the ice flowing from the northwest. The till analysed also shows considerable lateral variation, indicative of the mosaic nature of subglacial sedimentation. We consider the diversity of permeability of deposits over which the ice sheet extended to be the prime factor that determined such a situation.
