    Opis:
    The article describes the socio-cultural processes and public views of the Poltava province society formed under the influence of the First World War. The phenomena aroused during the war of 1914-1918 are examined, their influence on fundamental changes in the socio-political, economic and cultural life is investigated. It is noted that at the end of the 19th – beginning of the 20th centuries the public consciousness of the population of Poltava region represented a complex system of ideas, views, moods and was formed under the influence of cultural tradition and modernization processes. It is demonstrated that the cultural life of the Poltava region at the beginning of the twentieth century was characterized by a wide range of diverse practices both folk-ritual and urban-modernistic ones. It is proved that in wartime conditions a mass culture was formed; its influence spread over a large part of society.

    During his stay in Australia and Melanesia from 1914 to 1920, the anthropo- logist Bronisław Malinowski frequently experienced dichotomous and contradictory atti- tudes to people, places, and events: the contrast between the ‘civilized’ Australia and the ‘savage’ Melanesia; the background of the Austria-ruled Poland in which he grew up and the British-dominated Australia, Austria’s enemy in the First World War; the emotional tension of simultaneous attraction to two women – Nina Stirling of Adelaide and Elsie Rosaline Masson of Melbourne; the dilemma of the ‘heroic’ versus the ‘unheroic’ related to the war. Most of the dualities of Malinowski’s Australian-Melanesian experience, re- flected in letters to his mother Józefa Malinowska, Elsie R. Masson, and in Diary in the Strict Sense of the Term (1989), were resolved at the end of the period, which became a turning point in his life.

    The article discusses the oldest recorded film adaptation of the legend of Pan Twardowski, found in the archives of the George Eastman House in Rochester, New York. The two-part feature film was filmed in Russia between 1916 and 1917, and its creator was the famed Polish filmmaker Władysław Starewicz.

    Opis:
    Kriegerdenkmäler spiegeln auf besondere Weise sowohl Brüche als auch Kontinuitäten wider, welche die politischen Umwälzungen des Ersten Weltkrieges, des Dritten Reichs sowie der Nachkriegszeit in der österreichischen Erinnerungskultur hinterlassen haben. Dieser Beitrag widmet sich einer Reihe von Denkmälern einer spezifischen Region in Oberösterreich. Die Analyse der Inschriften führt den ambivalenten und oberflächlich neutralen Charakter von Kriegerdenkmälern vor Augen: Deren sprachliche Botschaften lassen zwischen den Extrempolen ‚Helden‘ und ‚Opfer‘ bis heute kaum Platz für gesellschaftlich schonungslose und gleichzeitig historisch reflektierte Perspektiven auf die Gewaltexzesse des 20. Jahrhunderts.
    Pomniki poległych odzwierciedlają w szczególny sposób zarówno trwałość jak i niestabilność spuścizny, jaką pozostawiły w austriackiej kulturze pamięci polityczne zawirowania okresu pierwszej wojny światowej, Trzeciej Rzeszy a także okresu po drugiej wojnie światowej. Artykuł poświęcony jest pomnikom specyficznego regionu: Górnej Austrii. Analiza inskrypcji nagrobnych unaocznia zarówno powierzchowność pamięci zbiorowej jak i ambiwalentny charakter pomników poległych żołnierzy. Ich językowe przesłania – nadające żołnierzom ekstremalne funkcje, oscylujące pomiędzy rolą ‘bohaterów’ i ‘ofiar’ – do dnia dzisiejszego nie dopuszczają społecznie koniecznej i jednocześnie historycznie pogłębionej refleksji o zbrodniach XX wieku.
    War memorials reflect in a special way both the breaks and continuities which the political upheavals of the First World War, the Third Reich and the post-war period left in the Austrian culture of remembrance. In this article, the main focus is on a sample of war memorials in a specific region of Upper Austria. An analysis of the inscriptions shows the ambivalence and superficial neutrality characteristic of war memorials: Their messages based on the extreme poles of ‘heroes’ and ‘victims’, leave little space for socially direct and historically reflective perspectives on the violent excesses of the 20th century.
