- In this paper the author presents in chronological order the problem of preservation of cultural monuments in Sweden, which he had studied during his last stay in that country. Included into the adjoining annex is the Manifesto of King Charles issued in Stockholm in 1666, which was the starting point for the legal aspect of preservation of historical relics. Further on the paper submits the detailed organisational scheme of Swedish governmental authorities responsible for preservation of cultural monuments: The High Board for Preservation of National Monuments and The Royal Academy of Literature, History and Antiquity, which are statutorily connected. In its wide meaning preservation of cultural monuments in Sweden is based upon legal acts and developed state machine. The final reorganisation in this field was regulated by the legal act issued in 1942, which automatically repealed a number of old laws; the act aimed at establishing the uniform legal background for preservation of national monuments, meeting the requirements of the present day. The project of a new legal act on the preservation problems has been given a lot of attention in Stockholm recently. And this is going to be linked with the reorganisation of the existing system of management. The Swedes try to create such legal and organisational forms that would not interfere with the demands of future. The number of legal acts presented in this paper, which have been issued for last ages running, speaks well for the Swedish national traditions in care for relics of the past.
