Opis:: The aim of the article is to analyze spatial issues in 36 towns belonging to the Polish network of Cittaslow, the most dynamically developing network of all 33 countries in the world and second in terms of size, after the founding Italian network. The main spatial analyses were preceded by an analysis of the literature on the Cittaslow network, especially in the context of research on Polish towns. The analyses concerned (1) certification criteria in the context of the spatial directions of the town’s development; (2) spatial structure of member towns and (3) local spatial development plans in force, which, as a rule, are the main spatial planning documents in Poland.

Opis:: The aim of the article is to present the process of using the slow city concept in Poland in the context of the key determinants of the development of small towns and to show the potential and directions of development of Cittaslow towns. The research was based on a critical analysis of the literature and strategic documents of the local development policy of Cittaslow towns. To compare the level of development of Cittaslow towns, a synthetic indicator of the socio-economic potential and the indicator of the quality of life were used. The first section describes the paradigm of sustainable development and the development challenges of small towns in Poland. The second section discusses the assumptions of the slow city and the determinants of the process of its implementation. The next section focuses on the socio-economic potential of Cittaslow towns and possible directions of their development. The last section assesses examples of cooperation between towns belonging to the Polish National Cittaslow Network.

Opis:: Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie problemów kształtowania krajobrazów małych miast na przykładzie województwa lubelskiego. Na podstawie literatury opisano cechy charakterystyczne krajobrazu małego miasta. Następnie przeprowadzono badania sondażowe z wykorzystaniem kwestionariusza ankiety skierowanego pocztą elektroniczną do władz 28 małych miast woj. lubelskiego. Na podstawie odpowiedzi przesłanych z 22 miast rozpoznano w jaki sposób samorządy badanych miast dbają o przestrzeń publiczną i krajobraz. Dodatkowo w badaniu poruszono kwestie jakości życia w mieście, rewitalizacji, pokrycia miejscowymi planami zagospodarowania przestrzennego, atutów miasta, problemów i planów rozwojowych miasta oraz sieci Cittaslow. Uzupełnieniem ankiety był wywiad swobodny oraz obserwacje terenowe. W przypadku Rejowca Fabrycznego, stanowiącego jedyne miasto w województwie należące do sieci Cittaslow, sprawdzono korzyści z przynależności do sieci, zaś dla pozostałych preferencje w zakresie wstąpienia do sieci. Przeprowadzone badania wykazały, że władze lokalne większości małych miast woj. lubelskiego wykazują dbałość o przestrzeń publiczną i krajobraz. Jednak nie wykorzystują wszystkich możliwości kształtowania i ochrony krajobrazu, zwłaszcza tych, które związane są z instrumentami planowania przestrzennego.
The goal of this paper is to present the problems involved in shaping the landscape of towns using the example of Lubelskie Province. The distinguishing features of a small town landscape were described based on the literature. Surveys were then conducted by sending questionnaires via email to the authorities of 28 small towns in Lubelskie Province. The submitted responses from 22 towns were used to examine how the local governments in the towns under study were taking care of their public space and the landscape. In addition, the survey touched on the quality of life in towns, revitalisation, coverage of local spatial development plans, the towns’ strengths, problems and development plans and membership in the Cittaslow network. The questionnaire was complemented with a free interview and field observations. In addition, the advantages of membership in the Cittaslow network in the case of Rejowiec Fabryczny (the only town in Lubelskie Province belonging to the Cittaslow network), and preferences concerning joining Cittaslow in the case of the other towns, were examined. This questionnaire survey shows that the local governments in most of the small towns in Lubelskie Province take care of their public space and the landscape. However, they do not use all of the opportunities available for shaping and protecting the landscape, particularly those related to spatial planning instruments.
