    Confucianism is a worldview that has shaped Chinese civilization and its various forms of statehood for over two thousand years. With the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949, its influence on the shaping of ideology and social life was interrupted for several decades. The new direction of the state initiated at the end of the 1970s resulted in the gradual restoration of selected ideas of Confucianism, which, along with Marxism and the strategy of entering globalization, shape the international identity of the Middle Kingdom. While Marxism remains the official ideology, one should focus on introducing elements of Chinese culture, which complements it in recognizing contemporary realities and formulating directions for changes in the state. The aim of the article is to show the influence of Confucianism on the contemporary Chinese narrative manifested in two dimensions: internal affairs, i.e. the development of the state and society, and external issues, international politics.

    At a time when China is assuming an increasingly influential role in world geostrategy, especially through economic and diplomatic power, there is still some ignorance about Chinese culture (Jullien, 2010). The aim of this article is to contribute to the understanding of the values of Chinese culture by reviewing the concepts of culture and communication in Chinese society based on the cultural dimensions advocated by Hofstede and on Miike’s “Asiacentric” perspectives. Based on the interpretation of these concepts, the present study argues that the development of communicative and intercultural competences is crucial not only to approach Chinese culture without generalizations or stereotyped insights but also for the benefit of dialogue between cultures and nations, so imperative these days.
    Numa época em que a China assume um papel cada vez mais influente na geoestratégia mundial, sobretudo através do poderio económico e diplomático, persiste ainda algum desconhecimento sobre a cultura chinesa (Jullien, 2010). O objetivo deste artigo é contribuir para a compreensão dos valores da cultura chinesa analisando os conceitos de cultura e de comunicação na sociedade chinesa à luz das dimensões culturais preconizadas por Hofstede e das perspectivas “asiacêntricas” defendidas por Miike. Com base na interpertação destes conceitos, o presente estudo defende que o desenvolvimento de competências comunicativas e interculturais se apresenta como um meio indispensável não só para conhecer a cultura chinesa sem uma abordagem apriorística ou estereotipada mas também para o sucesso do diálogo entre culturas e povos, tão premente nos dias que correm.

    Artykuł poświęcony jest zagadnieniu harmonii oraz jej wagi w komunikacji o chińskim charakterze. Celem głównym, prócz powyższego, jest uwrażliwienie Europejczyków i Chińczyków na różnice w postrzeganiu istoty harmonii. Autorka poprzez analizę przykładów, będących efektem wywiadów przeprowadzonych wśród obcokrajowców zatrudnionych w Chińskiej Republice Ludowej w 2009 i 2017 r., oraz literatury przedmiotu przybliża kategorię harmonii z punktu widzenia mieszkańców Polski/Europy oraz obywateli ChRL. Wymienione w artykule przykłady ukazują m.in., iż nie każdy mieszkaniec ChRL zachowuje się pro-harmonijnie, w polskim/europejskim tego słowa znaczeniu, na co wpływ ma odmienne definiowanie pojęcia harmonii i harmonijnych relacji.
    This article describes the challenges and importance of harmony in Chinese communication. The main purpose, in addition to the above mentioned, is to raise awareness in European and Chinese society of the differences in the perception of the nature of harmony. Based on the interviews performed with foreigners living in China in 2009 and 2017, and the literature review, the author approaches the different sides of harmony from the point of view of Poles/ Europeans and citizens of the People's Republic of China. The mentioned examples show, among others, that not every citizen of the PRC behaves pro-harmoniously in the Polish/ European sense, what is influenced with the different definition of the concept of harmony and harmonious relations.

    This article is the result of the author’s research done twice in China: a study trip organized by the Cracow University of Technology in 2014 and in 2019, during the Joint Studio programme co-organized by Andrzej Frycz Modrzewski Krakow University and Chinese Tsinghua University of Beijing. The subject coincides with this issue’s topic – the role of nature in architectural creations. China is a great example in this respect, where for thousands of years nature has been treated by the creators of cities and buildings with the highest respect and friendship, especially in the idea of Tao that arose around the 6th century BC. and used it successfully ever since. The relationship between nature and architecture/city planning has varied throughout history and has been intensified in different cultural eras and styles. This demonstrates a wonderful historical panorama. Moreover, it offers contemporary architects a universal, international and useful lesson about China, sustainability, ecology, and high aesthetics.
    Niniejszy artykuł jest rezultatem badań autora dokonywanych dwukrotnie w Chinach: w 2014 roku podczas wyjazdu studialnego organizowanego przez Politechnikę Krakowską oraz w 2019 roku w czasie programu Joint Studio współorganizowanego przez Krakowską Akademię im. Andrzeja Frycza Modrzewskiego i chińską uczelnię Tsinghua University z Pekinu. Przedstawiony temat jest zbieżny z problematyką niniejszego numeru czasopisma, którą jest rola natury w kreacjach architektonicznych. Znakomitym przykładem w tej mierze są Chiny, gdzie przez tysiące lat natura była traktowana przez twórców miast i budowli z najwyższym szacunkiem i przyjaźnią, szczególnie w idei Tao zaistniałej około VI wieku p.n.e. i stosowanej z sukcesami po dziś dzień. Relacje natura – architektura/planowanie miast były zróżnicowane poprzez historię oraz bardziej lub mniej zintensyfi kowane w różnych epokach kulturowych i stylach. Ukazuje to czytelnikom wspaniałą panoramę historyczną oraz oferuje współczesnym architektom uniwersalną, międzynarodową i użyteczną lekcję płynącą z Chin, która odnosi się do zrównoważenia, ekologii oraz estetyki wysokiej.

    In the 21st century, China has significantly strengthened its role in world historical processes. In 40 years of reform and openness, China has not only become a world leader in economic development, it has also become an active player in the world political arena. China began to show greater interest in world development and at the same time began to actively integrate into the world community, seeking to prove the global benefits of cooperation with China. The Chinese leadership believes that China cannot stand aside from world processes and, like the rest of the world, be held hostage to the policies of other countries and bear the brunt of all the negative consequences of such policies. As a result, it was taken a course for active integration with the world community and strengthening China’s participation and influence in world processes. For this purpose, several strategic strategies have been developed to achieve a specific goal, including “going abroad”, “globalizing”, “internationalizing” and others. At the same time, the strengthening of integration processes in the world could not leave the country’s leadership indifferent, so China began to pay more attention to participation in both global and regional integration processes. One such area was China’s accession to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) in 1991. These areas have identified three key aspects of the Asia-Pacific Dream concept: development and economic cohesion, the unification of Asia with an emphasis on harmony, mutual benefit and prosperity in the region. The China Asia-Pacific Dream initiative aims to maintain stable and friendly partnerships with neighboring countries in order to build mutual trust. China has identified a number of common challenges that the parties must address in order to build an Asian community. China hopes to work with its partners to create a beautiful region that will lead the world, benefit all parties and bring prosperity to future generations. In this context, the Chinese leadership has identified a number of areas for development for the Asia-Pacific region.
    У ХХІ столітті Китай значно посилив свою роль в світових історичних процесах. За 40 років політики реформ та відкритості Китай не тільки перетворився на країну-лідера в світовому економічному розвитку, він також став активним гравцем на світовій політичній арені. Китай почав виявлять більший інтерес до світового розвитку і поряд з цим почав активно інтегруватись у світове співтовариство, прагнучи довести світові переваги від співпраці з Китаєм. Керівництво країни вважає, що Китай не може стояти осторонь світових процесів, і як решта країн світу бути заручником політики інших країн та нести тягар усіх негативних наслідків від такої політики. В результаті було взято курс на активну інтеграцію з світовим співтовариством та посилення участі та впливу Китаю в світових процесах. З цією метою було розроблено кілька стратегічних стратегій спрямованих на досягнення визначеної мети серед яких – «йти зовні», «глобалізуватись», «інтернаціоналізуватись» та інші. Водночас посилення інтеграційних процесів в світі не могло залишити керівництво країни байдужими, тому Китай почав приділяти більшої уваги до участі як в глобальних так і регіональних інтеграційних процесах. Одним з таких напрямків стало приєднання Китаю в 1991 р. до форму Азійсько-Тихоокеанського економічного співробітництва (АТЕС). Визначено три аспекти для майбутнього АТЕС, а саме: поглиблена регіональна економічна інтеграція; сприяння інноваційному розвитку, економічна реформа та зростання; посилення всебічного розвитку інфраструктури та з’єднання. Ці напрями визначили три ключові аспекти концепції «Азійсько-Тихоокеанської мрії» – розвиток та економічна з’єднаність, об’єднання Азії з акцентом на гармонію, взаємну вигоду та процвітання в регіоні. Китайська ініціатива «Азійсько-Тихоокеанської мрії» спрямована на підтримку стабільних та дружніх партнерських стосунків з сусідніми країнами, з метою формування взаємодовірчих відносин. Китай розраховує спільно з партнерами створити прекрасний регіон, який поведе за собою світ, сприятиме всім сторонам та принесе процвітання майбутнім поколінням. В цьому контексті керівництво Китаю визначило низку напрямків розвитку для АТР.
