Opis:
Zhenghecaris shankouensis gen. et sp. nov. is one of the largest “bivalved” arthropods of the Lower Cambrian Maotianshan Shale fauna. Its non−mineralized carapace was dome−like, laterally compressed, armed with rostral features, and probably enclosed the entire body of the animal. Zhenghecaris was provided with elliptical stalked lateral eyes. The carapace design, external ornament and visual organs of Zhenghecaris suggest affinities with the Thylacocephala, an extinct (Lower Silurian to Upper Cretaceous) group of enigmatic arthropods whose origins remain poorly understood. The bivalved arthropodsIsoxys and Tuzoia (Lower and Middle Cambrian) are two other potential thylacocephalan candidates making this group of arthropods a possible new component of Cambrian marine communities. Zhenghecaris, Isoxys, and Tuzoia are interpreted as nektonic animals that probably inhabited the lower level of the water column in shallow shelf settings at depths of perhaps 100–150 m or less. Their feeding mode either in the water column (e.g., mesozooplankton) or on the substrate (e.g., small epibenthos, detritus) is uncertain, although some of these arthropods were possibly mid−water predators (e.g., Isoxys with raptorial appendages).

Opis:
The quantification of biomass carbon pools is important for understanding carbon cycling in forest ecosystems. This study was designed to reveal the effects of stand age on biomass partitioning and carbon storage of Chinese fir plantation stands in Dabie Mountains of Anhui, East China. A total of six even-aged Chinese fir plantation stands along an age-sequence from 10 to 50 years were selected. To quantify the biomass of different tree components, 18 trees with diameter at breast height (D1.3) from 6.5 to 35.2 cm were harvested from the different aged stands. Biomasses of understory vegetation, forest floor and standing dead trees were also investigated. Total biomass carbon storages ranged from 57.6 to 211.4 Mg ha–1 in the different aged stands. Tree layer comprised from 93.7% to 96.4% of the total biomass C pools in the different aged stands. The C pools of the necromass were from 1.8 to 6.2 Mg ha–1. Stand age had a significant effect on tree biomass partitioning, with an increase in proportion of root biomass. The root/shoot ratios were from 0.187 to 0.312, which was significantly positively correlated to stand age. The existing plantation stands are still developing and have somewhat high rate of biomass and carbon accumulations beyond the normal rotation period (usually 25–30 years) even over an age of 50 years. Appropriate prolongation of the rotation period of Chinese fir plantation will be effective in maintaining long-term productivity and providing large carbon sink. The measurements provide valuable data for modelling productivity of Chinese fir plantation forest.

Opis:
Radon (222Rn) and thoron (220Rn) from soil gas are very significant factors that can affect the indoor radon level in the first floor or in the basement. China is one of the countries with the highest thorium content in the world. Therefore, it is very significant to study 222Rn/220Rn concentration in the soil in Shenzhen City (SC). A 222Rn/220Rn survey was performed using a portable radon monitor (model RAD7) at 69 sites, covered a total area of 1800 km2 in 2013 to get the original data for radon risk estimation in SC. The average values of 222Rn and 220Rn concentration of soil gas of the total 69 locations are 86 ± 72 kBq•m–3 and 118 ± 85 kBq•m–3, respectively. 222Rn/220Rn concentrations are related to geological lithology. 222Rn concentrations vary from 40 to 370 kBq•m–3 and from 15 to 118 kBq•m–3 in weathered granite products and sediments, respectively, while 220Rn concentrations are from 103 to 435 kBq•m–3 and 2.2 to 96 kBq•m–3. The higher 220Rn values were mainly observed at the sites covered by the weathered granite products. Comparing with the areas of high 222Rn concentration, the areas of high 220Rn values are larger. The distribution of 222Rn concentration in the vertical direction displays an exponential distribution mode, but there is no rule of 220Rn concentration. The investigation suggests that people should pay attention to 220Rn contribution in the radon mapping of SC, as well as in the indoor radon survey.

Opis:
Wenjiang (China) is the area which undertakes high-intensity planting activities. Additionally, the soil environmental capacity has been a hot area of research as it plays a key role in environmental protection planning, environmental impact assessment and sustainable development. In this paper, the static model of soil environmental capacity is employed to investigate the distribution of residual soil environmental capacity in Wenjiang. The results show that the soil environmental capacity of mercury is the largest for industrial land while it is the lowest in garlic-rice planting areas; the soil environmental capacity of arsenic is the largest in city construction land while it is the lowest in ecological conservation zone; the soil environmental capacity of lead is the largest in city construction land while it is the lowest in garlic-rice planting areas; and the soil environmental capacity of chromium is the largest in city construction land while it is the lowest in garlic-rice planting areas.
