Opis:
Introduction. To-date, the influence of heavy metals such as Pb or Cd on mental functioning, and especially on the occurrence of depressive and anxiety-related disorders, has not been well understood. Objectives. 1) Assessment of Pb and Cd levels in whole blood of postmenopausal women. 2) Assessment of the severity of anxiety and depressive symptoms depending on Pb and Cd levels in whole blood of postmenopausal women. Materials and method. The survey-based study involved 198 healthy postmenopausal women from West Pomeranian province in Poland. It was performed using the Primary Care Evaluation of Mental Disorders (PRIME-MD), Beck’s Depression Inventory (BDI), and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). The second part of the study was based on biochemical analysis of the levels of heavy metals (Pb, Cd). Results. The mean level of Pb was 19.85 ± 8.99 μg/l and Cd 0.87±0.98 μg/l; these levels were within normal ranges. Analysis of the mean levels of Pb and Cd in whole blood of postmenopausal women in relation to the severity of depressive symptoms did not reveal statistically significant differences. Correlation analysis demonstrated a statistically significant (p<0.05) negative correlation (-0.22) between the level of Pb and the severity of anxiety as a state. Correlations between the levels of Pb and Cd and the severity of anxiety as a trait were not statistically significant. Conclusions. The mean Pb and Cd levels in whole blood of healthy postmenopausal women did not exceed acceptable limits. The study did not confirm a relationship between the levels of selected heavy metals and the severity of anxiety and depressive symptoms in healthy women. However, there was a relationship between the level of Pb and the severity of anxiety as a state.

Opis:
The problem of environmental pollution with heavy metals is still serious, despite numerous activities related to the reduction of anthropogenic emissions of these elements into the environment. There is a growing concentration of many toxic metals in soils and vegetation (remaining in close relation with the state of air quality), and especially in the environment of large urban agglomerations. The paper presents an assessment of the degree of contamination of soil and grass vegetation with heavy metals (Zn, Pb, Cu, Cd) in the vicinity of the communication over Warsaw. Research material obtained from the same locations (samples of soil and grass vegetation) was analyzed (AAS) in terms of the total concentration of metals in soils and its mobile form, while in plants is the total concentration of the corresponding trace the AAS atomic spectrometry. Based on the concentrations of metals in soil and vegetation samples were determined bioaccumulation factors. Methods mobile metals isolated by selective extraction of a 0.05 M EDTA solution. The results obtained were related to the results of similar research conducted two years earlier in 2005. Additionally the effect of leaching of soluble forms of metal particulate pollutants deposited on the surface of vegetation.

Cadmium (Cd) is toxic for humans, but its effects on the yield and quality of rice under contaminated irrigation conditions remain uncertain. In this study, paddy soils in the Red River Delta (Vietnam) were selected for experiments with the purpose of understanding the effects of Cd contaminated irrigation water on growth, yields, and grain Cd accumulation. In addition, biochar was produced from rice husk (BRH) and rice straw for preventing Cd infiltration into rice was also studied in this experiment. A field experiment was established with applicated BRH and straw into polluted paddy soil, as a result the Cd content in grains reduced significantly. The Cd contaminated soil was added to the BRH and rice straw (RS) with six ratios, including: (1) RS 2.5%, (2) BRH 2.5%, (3) RS-BRH: 1.25–1.25%, (4) RS 5.0%, (5) BRH 5.0%, (6) RS-BRH: 2.5–2.5%, (w:w). Besides, three content levels 0.01–0.05–0.5 mg/L of Cd in irrigation water were applied throughout crop season. The results showed that the Cd accumulation in rice was in the following order: roots > stems > seeds. With 3 contaminated irrigation levels which were applied, the Cd concentrations of 0.05 mg/L and 0.5 mg/L affected plant height and yield. However, the Cd content in grains under contaminated soil condition can be controlled from 82.47–83.94% by applying a BRH ratio from 2.5–5% (w:w).

Opis:
The phytoremediation potential of Indian mustard (Brassica juncea) on the cadmium-contaminated soil was investigated under the treatment of sulfur (15, 30 and 60 g/kg soil). The effects of the sulfur treatment were evaluated by measuring the biomass and root vitality of the plants, enzymatic activities, and the content of malondialdehyde and Cd. The results show that the biomass and root vitality of the plants were significantly increased, and the activities of superoxide dismutase and catalase were improved when the soil was treated with 30 g sulfur /kg soil, while the activities of peroxidase and malondialdehyde were decreased. The total Cd in the plants treated with 15 g/kg soil was 2.8 times higher than that in the control plants. In summary, the results indicate that the addition of sulfur could promote the growth of Indian mustard and promote the uptake of Cd. As such, the treatment of cadmium-contaminated soil with sulfur can be used as a strategy for the removal of cadmium contamination by improving the phytoremediation potential of Indian mustard.

Opis:
The main threats to human health from heavy metals are associated with exposure to lead, cadmium, mercury and arsenic. These metals have been extensively studied and their effects on human health regularly reviewed by international bodies such as the WHO. Heavy metals have been used by humans for thousands of years. Although several adverse health effects of heavy metals have been known for a long time, exposure to heavy metals continues, and is even increasing in some parts of the world, in particular, in less developed countries. However, over the last 100 years, emissions have declined in most developed countries. Cadmium compounds, the exception, are currently mainly used in re-chargeable nickel-cadmium batteries. Cadmium emissions have increased dramatically during the 20th century, one reason being that cadmium-containing products are rarely re-cycled, but often dumped together with household waste. Cigarette smoking is a major source of cadmium exposure. In non-smokers, food is the most important source of cadmium exposure. Recent data indicate that adverse health effects of cadmium exposure may occur at lower exposure levels than previously anticipated, primarily in the form of kidney damage, but possibly also in bone effects and fractures. Many individuals in Europe already exceed the recommended exposure levels and the margin is very narrow for large groups. Therefore, measures should be taken to reduce cadmium exposure in the general population in order to minimize the risk of adverse health effects. The general population is primarily exposed to mercury via food, fish being a major source of methyl mercury exposure, as is dental amalgam. The general population, however, does not face a significant health risk from methyl mercury, although certain groups with high fish consumption may attain blood levels associated with a low risk of neurological damage to adults. Since there is a risk to the fetus in particular, pregnant women should avoid a high intake of certain fish, such as shark, swordfish and tuna; fish (such as pike, walleye and bass) taken from polluted fresh waters should especially be avoided. There has been a debate on the safety of dental amalgams and claims have been made that mercury from amalgam may cause a variety of diseases. However, there are no studies so far that have been able to show any associations between amalgam fillings and ill health. The general population is exposed to lead from air and food in roughly equal proportions. During the last century, lead emissions to ambient air caused considerable pollution, mainly due to lead emissions from petrol. Children are particularly susceptible to lead exposure due to high gastrointestinal uptake and the permeable blood-brain barrier. Blood levels in children should be reduced below the levels so far considered acceptable as recent data indicates that lead may hold neurotoxic effects at lower levels of exposure than previously anticipated. Although lead in petrol has dramatically decreased over the last decades, thereby reducing environmental exposure, phasing out any remaining uses of lead additives in motor fuels should be encouraged. The use of lead-based paints should also be abandoned, and lead should not be used in food containers. In particular, the public should be aware of glazed food containers, which may leach lead into food. Exposure to arsenic is mainly via intake of food and drinking water, food being the most important source in most populations. Long-term exposure to arsenic in drinking water is mainly related to increased risks of skin cancer, but also enhanced risk of some other cancers, as well as other skin lesions such as hyperkeratosis and pigmentation changes. Occupational exposure to arsenic, primarily by inhalation, is causally associated with lung cancer. Clear exposure-response relationships and high risks have been observed.

Opis:
The investigations were focused on determining the level of trace element pollution of soil and root vegetables cultivated for human consumption in the Miechowski county. The collected soils differed in view of their floatable particles, colloidal clay and organic matter content, as well as pH value. Differences in the total content of trace elements and the content of their soluble forms extracted with 0.1 mol • dm–3 HCl solution also occurred. The total content of trace elements in the analysed soils and their soluble forms were determined by soil reaction. Geometric mean of total heavy metals content in the studied soils was as follows: 55.08 mg Zn • kg–1, 8.08 mg Cu • kg–1, 10.05 mg Ni • kg–1, 19.85 mg Pb • kg–1 and 0.46 mg Cd • kg–1. The assessment of heavy metals content in the analysed soils was conducted according to the framework guidelines for agriculture elaborated by IUNG. In this respect 44 of analysed samples were classified as soils with natural heavy metals contents. The content of trace elements in cultivated root vegetables was determined by the species, analysed plant part and soil pH. The content of these elements was much higher in plant tops than in roots. For instance, if one assumes geometric mean of cadmium and lead content in parsley roots grown in soil with pH • 6.5 as 100, cadmium concentration in leaves was higher by 64 %, and lead content was higher by 36 %. On the basis of the obtained results, content of trace elements in vegetable roots was assessed assuming the critical levels of trace element in agricultural products stated by IUNG. Taking into consideration these criteria was stated that all samples of the vegetable roots fulfilled the requirements of usefulness for human consumption in respect of copper and nickel contents, and majority of them in respect of lead content. However, 7.6 % of samples did not fulfil these requirements because of excessive content of lead (> 1 mg • kg–1), 52.5 % of zinc (> 50 mg • kg–1), and as much as 81.6 % samples because of cadmium excess (> 0.15 mg • kg–1), despite their being cultivated in majority in soils with natural these metals content. Excessive content of copper and nickel was registered only in 1.3 % of tops samples, lead in 51.3 %, zinc in 79.7 %, and cadmium in 98.1 % of tops samples, in which 7.6 % of tops samples did not meet fodder requirements for zinc, and as much as 65.8 % for cadmium. Taking in to account all roots and tops samples, only 0.6 % of them did not meet criteria of usefulness for human consumption, because of copper and nickel excess, 29.4 % for lead, 66.1 % for zinc, and as much as 89.9 % of samples contained excessive amount of cadmium. Moreover, in 3.8 % of samples Zn content exceeded admissible values in fodder and in 32.9 % contained excessive amount of Cd.

The aim of this study was to determine the content of chosen heavy metals (mercury, lead and cadmium) and some nutritional substances (p-carotene and vitamin C) in raw broccoli samples obtained from trade network. For the assessment of heavy metals the samples were mineralized with the mixture of sulphuric acid and hydrogen peroxide and the analysis was performed using atomic absorption spectroscopy (analyzers AMA 254 and AYANTA GBC 933A, GBC, Australia). Vitamin C and P-carotene were extracted by hexane and acetone and mixture of methanol, phosphoric acid and redistilled water, respectively. Both p-carotene and vitamin C were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection (Coulochem III, ESA, USA). The broccoli samples contained 0.094 š 0.115 ug o 100 g-1 of mercury and 0.0004 š 0.0398 ug - 100 g-1 of lead. No cadmium was detected. It appears from this results that no heavy metals accumulate in this vegetable since all concentrations were below quality standard. The amount of P-carotene in broccoli was 1.703 š 0.194 mg o 100 g-1 and the content of vitamin C was 57.974 š 0.535 mg o 100 g-1.

Opis:
In the thesis assessed was fertilizing value of ashes from municipal sewage sludge combustion in grate furnace in Pomorzany Sewage Treatment Plant in Szczecin. The ash was treated as a substitute of phosphorus from phosphatic fertilizer because general content of this component exceeded 20 % of P2O5. In 2011–2012 a field experiment was conducted on a light soil. The scheme of the experiment included five objects of fertilizing corn for seeds and spring rape with mineral fertilizers (NK, NPK) and mineral fertilizers together with increasing doses of ash from municipal sewage sludge combustion (NK + P1, NK + P2, NK + P3). Substitution of phosphorus in a dose of NPK from superphosphate enriched with phosphorus from ash (P1, P2, P3) from municipal sewage sludge combustion did not cause any differences in the volume of corn seeds or corn stove or rapeseed straw, and in the object NK + P3 received were considerately richer crops with spring rape seeds than from any other objects. Ahs caused an increase in content of cadmium and nickel in seeds and straw, as for lead only in corn seeds, content of cadmium and lead in spring rape seeds and cadmium in straw. After two years of applying nitrogen and potassium as mineral fertilizers and ashes from municipal sewage sludge combustion, in comparison with exclusive fertilizing corn and spring rape with mineral fertilizers, an increase of lead in general soil content was observed, and general content of cadmium and nickel as well as their dissoluble form in 1 molHCl dm–3 in soil from all objects was similar.

Opis:
City Recreational Parks (RP) exert important functions for inhabitants of great agglomerations. They create peculiar ecosystem subjected to high pressure of anthropogenic factors (ie, motorization, maintenance, dusts), which may be a source of heavy metal contamination. Four parks located within the city Poznan have been: RP Marcinkowski (RPM), RP Solacki (RPS), RP Wodziczko (RPW) and RP Piatkowo (RPP). The aim of the work was to apply different quantitative methods for assessing heavy metal contamination state of these parks and to outline the encountered difficulties in the choice of the appropriate method. On the basis of the assessment made by the IUNG suggestion [16], it appeared, that soils of all Recreational Parks may be considered as not contaminated by Pb, Cu and Zn. Cadmium was the main contaminant of RPM, RPS and RPW soils. The use of data representing the geochemical background [17], classifies soils of all parks as contaminated to polluted, even, whereas the evaluation made on the basis of mean heavy metal contents of Polish soils [18], stated that cadmium solely exceeded the reference value. Criteria reported in the Minister of Environment Directive [19] dealing with heavy metal thresholds seem to be less restrictive. The resulting assessment revealed that soils of investigated parks are free of any contamination.

Opis:
Significant traffic congestion can lead to contamination of the soil and water environment within the range of its impact, i.a. with mercury, lead, cadmium, chromium and zinc. As a consequence of contamination of the subsurface soil layers, migration of metal ions into groundwater is possible, consequently leading to contamination of local aquifers. In 2015-2016 a soil test was conducted at a depth of 0.4-0.6 m below surface level in the vicinity of about a dozen kilometers from the southern ring road of Kraków. The total contents of mercury, lead, cadmium, chromium and zinc were measured in the collected samples (mainly medium and fine sands) and a leaching test was conducted using the classical batch test 1:10. The mercury content in the soil samples ranged between 0.02 and 0.06 mg/kg, cadmium 0.1 to 0.7 mg/kg, chromium 0.3 to as much as 116 mg/kg, lead from 3.7 to 26.6 mg/kg and zinc from 17 to 102 mg/kg. The conducted leaching tests have shown that in all samples the release of metal ions into the solution may be observed. The solubility of the compounds of the analyzed metals ranges from a fraction of a percentage point (0.01% for zinc) up to a few and even, as in the case of mercury, over a dozen percent (approx. 15.7%) of the total metal content accumulated in the soil.

Opis:
Recreational Parks (RP) of the city Poznan were investigated in October 2009 in order to evaluate contamination state of their soils by lead and cadmium. From the Recreational Park Marcinkowski – RPM, Recreational Park Solacki – RPS, Recreational Park Wodziczko – RPW and Recreational Park Piatkowo – RPP the soil samples were collected at two depths, ie 0–10 and 10–20 cm, in the quantity of 36, 52, 32 and 34, respectively. The total content of Pb and Cd was determined in these samples, as well as some their selected physical and chemical properties. Detailed assessment of the soil contamination state was undertaken on the basis of different indices such as geochemical accumulation index (Igeo), factor (C f i ) and degree (Cdeg) of contamination. The evaluation of soils made by applying Pb-Igeo has shown that parks may be ranged as follows: RP Piatkowo < RP Solacki < RP Wodziczko < RP Marcinkowski. The concern and threat related to the impact of Pb on humans requires more restrictive limits of content, hence geochemical background (GB) values as reported by Czarnowska [20] may be considered as more adapted for protecting from potential health hazards. In the case of cadmium, the Cd-Igeo based contamination assessment allowed to organize parks accordingly: RP Piatkowo < RP Marcinkowski < RP Solacki < RP Wodziczko. Cadmium contribution in the overall contamination (Cdeg) changed as did the Cd-Igeo indices. This was mostly reflected in the RPs Wodziczko and Solacki and intermediately in the RP Marcinkowski. On the basis of the performed geochemical evaluation of soil Recreational Park Piatkowo is the sole to be classified as free from Pb and Cd contamination threat.
Rekreacyjne Parki (RP) miasta Poznań zbadano w październiku 2009 r. w celu oceny stanu zanieczyszczenia ich gleb ołowiem i kadmem. Z Parku Marcinkowskiego - RPM, Parku Sołackiego - RPS, Parku Wodziczki - RPW i Parku Piątkowo - RPP pobrano próbki gleby z dwóch głębokości (0-10 10-20 cm) w ilości odpowiednio: 36, 32, 52 i 34. Oznaczono całkowitą zawartość Pb i Cd oraz wybrane właściwości fizyczne i chemiczne tych próbek gleby. Szczegółową ocenę stanu zanieczyszczenia gleb rzeprowadzono na podstawie różnych wskaźników, takich jak: geochemiczny indeks akumulacji (Igeo) oraz spółczynnik (C współczynnik ) i stopień (Cdeg) zanieczyszczenia.

Opis:
Among a number of climate-related factors, moisture has the greatest impact on crop productivity. In recent years, certain changes have been observed under conditions of the Forest-Steppe of Ukraine with regard to precipitation – from low to in some cases – abnormally high, which requires the study of their impact on the yield and safety of cereal grain for its forecasted production. The article examined the effect of a high level of soil moisture (256.2–272.5 mm) and a low level (47.4–52.3 mm) during the growing season (germination→earing) of spring barley grain on the accumulation of heavy metals in it and its productivity under the conditions of gray forest soils of the Right Bank Forest Steppe of Ukraine. Spring barley varieties Helios and Caesar were selected for the research. A decrease in the accumulation coefficient at a high level of soil moisture (256.6–272.5 mm) in spring barley grain Pb from 8.3% to 11.3%, Cd – from 35.0% to 35.5%, Zn was established – by 15% and Cu – from 11.2% to 16.6% compared to the low level of soil moisture (47.1 mm – 53.3 mm). At the same time, it was found that with a high level of soil moisture, there is a decrease in the yield of Helios and Caesar spring barley by 18.0% and 14.1%, respectively.
