Opis:
Research interests of the author focus, among others, on accounting and Catholic social teaching (CST). This paper is motivated by the wish to launch research into these areas by raising the question featuring in the title about the feasibility of interdisciplinary studies covering the above-mentioned fields of research, i.e., accounting and Catholic social teaching. The paper makes an attempt to answer the question, however, whether it needs to be stressed that it just delineates a context for a wider and in-depth discussion that can be continued. Looking at conclusions reached by the author we may agree that it is possible to make references to Catholic social teaching when expanding the body of research knowledge in accounting. The aforesaid can be substantiated by the following arguments. First, CST can be viewed not only as the Catholic Church's doctrine but also as a reflection of research activity. Second, today there is a number of research works that discuss interdisciplinary studies on CST and social sciences, including economics and law. Third, accounting is a social science but at the same time it is an applied science focused, among others, on seeking solutions that would assist humanity and, above all, economic entities in accomplishing goals and meeting requirements set forth for them, which the mankind delivers not just in the economic context but also in the context of the system of values approved and exercised by societies. Fourth, in the literature there are writings that touch upon accounting and its links with ethics, culture, and religion (e.g., studies on accounting and Islam). In view of the above, seeking solutions in accounting (e.g. in reporting) that would meet requirements posed by CST is not in contradiction with to-date threads in research considerations and studies.

The Word of modern finance is a growing challenge for society. Catholic social science recognizes numerous problems in this area, hence the emerging diagnoses warning against the effects of abandoning ethical requirements in economics. Particularly valuable in this area is the Vatican document Oeconomicae et pecuniariae questiones issued by the Congregation for Doctrine of the Faith and the Department for Integral Human Development on 17/05/2018. Among the serious problems affecting the 21st century’s finances listed there were: the process of financial detachment from the real economy, immoral financial and tax practices, and the risks associated with the growing globalization process. Each of these issues requires increased socio-political attention in the light of the principles of proper anthropology. The latter must value human dignity and the value of truth rooted in love, higher than the prospects of expected financial gains.

The subject matter of the paper is the John Paul II teachings on the fields of a state’s activity in economic life. The first part of article talks about general elements of economic order: private property, liberal market, a just salary for labour and the participation of workers in the control of a business. The second part of the paper confirms that the state ought to create a solid infrastructure of economy and to find a good balance between different sectors of economic life. The last part of the paper shows that the state ought to interfere sometimes in the economic field, for example, to combat unemployment and poverty, or to protect the family.

Opis:
The role of Catholic social teaching has been attributed to the promotion of moral values and principles that should be considered when establishing or evaluating a given social, economic, or political system. This also applies to smaller structures, specific institutions, concepts, and practical social solutions, which may include social entrepreneurship. The article aims to confirm the hypothesis that, taking into account the principles of Catholic social teaching in the process of discovering the axionormative determinants of social entrepreneurship allows its deeper understanding and more effective implementation of its praxeological goals. At the beginning of the paper, the author emphasises the common source of all general and specific axionormative criteria of the two analysed disciplines – the dignity of a human person. Further deliberations revolve around other values and principles, such as the value of human work and entrepreneurship, the common good, the universal destination of goods, the preferential option for the poor, solidarity, subsidiarity, and participation.

Traditionally Catholicism has been perceived as unfriendly to the capitalist economy. Protestantism’s image is different: it has been regarded as a religious movement which boosted the so-called spirit of capitalism. The aim of this article is to raise a question whether today’s Catholicism still deserves that characterization as a denomination biased against capitalism. This issue is of considerable importance for business ethicists who are interested in the moral condition of market economy and, quite often, in the impact of religion on economic culture. Many of them are Catholics themselves and their religion seems to be a real source of inspiration for the ethical analyses of economic life they present. This article offers a number of arguments to the effect that although Catholic social teaching originated in the pre-modern, medieval period, it has changed to a large degree due to several papal encyclicals in the 20th century. Centesimus annus by John Paul II should be mentioned here as an epochal message expressing approval of human creativity and entrepreneurship. This new perspective was also due to Catholic philosophers and theologians such as Michael Novak and other members of the neoconservative movement in the United States.

Opis:
The problem of the development of a human person and the whole mankind has a significant place in the post Vaticanum Secundum social teaching of the Catholic church. This year’s anniversary of two social encyclicals: Paul VI’s Populorum progressio (1967) and John Paul II’s Sollicitudo rei socialis (1987) indicates the need of undertaking theological and anthropological reflection upon the process of development. The Catholic social teaching placing a human person in the center of all social, political and economic processes evaluates the quality of development from the perspective of respecting human dignity and rights. Although the development issues have originated from social teaching of local churches of Africa and Latin America, thanks to the social encyclicals it took on a global dimension. The social teaching of the Catholic church by indicating the need of the integral development of a human person and the whole mankind, points out the problems of material, spiritual poverty and violation of human rights. Therefore, the teaching about development is an integral element of the preferential option for the poor in the ministry of the Catholic church.

Social enterprises perceive social and environmental issues as primary objectives of their hybrid socio-economic activities. They believe that financial stability is a prerequisite, not a goal. This approach is similar to Catholic social teaching (CST). The detailed content of the social encyclicals is a valuable means of deeper exploration and enrichment of the moral dimension of social enterprise management. The following article analyses social entrepreneurship from the point of view of the fundamental principles of CST and theological premises. The reference to the management of a social enterprise of the supreme personalistic standard and principles such as the common good, subsidiarity, and solidarity allows the moral dimension of this process to be understood more deeply. The paper was created based on a method appropriate to research focused on moral theology and CST. First, the content of selected literature on the subject (social entrepreneurship) and carefully selected theological-moral sources (especially papal documents and publications by CST researchers) were analysed. Subsequently, the results of the analysis were subjected to inference and conceptual work in relation to the adopted general research objective and specific research tasks: the phenomenon of social enterprises was described; the specific features and limitations of the social enterprise management process were identified; the fundamental principles of Catholic social teaching as normative criteria for social enterprise management were reviewed; the possibility of applying the aforementioned CST principles to social enterprise practice was discussed and presented, and the final conclusions were formulated.

The main aim of this article is to show that except the priestly activity the priest should get involved in the social life. We can distinguish two principal forms of the presence of the church in the social life. The first of them is the wide understood teaching in the social sphere, second the concrete activity. The man in the light of the social science of the church is the highest value in the world, and the family is the proper environment of the man’s life and development. So the church realizes his social mission base on the family. The family is the value not only for the individual, but also for the larger community, in this case for the state community. Essential question, which to find oneself in priestly social prophesying is the question of the nation. The nation both through the community and the culture creates the conditions of the man development in all planes of development: - in the plane of the truth /the intellectual development/, - in the plane of the beauty /the spiritual development/, - in the plane of the good /the moral development/, - in the plane of holiness /the religious development. The question, which to also find oneself in the field of the interest of the social science of the church is the question of the character of state, relation the state - the church, as well as the question of the system of the state. The conception of state can’t be indifferent to the church. The problem, therefore such the system, which lets men lives on the proper living standard have to be the centre of the interest of the social science of the church. From the different social questions which are the symptom of the presence of the church in the life we can specify the problems of the human rights and the presence of Christian values in the social life. There are signaled here the most important questions which touch the man who is in the centre of the interest of the church.

Modern Catholic social criticism in Heinrich Federer’s publications and prose Heinrich Federer (1866–1928) was one of the most popular German-speaking writers of the pre- and interwar period who fell into oblivion for a half-century as a result of unfortunate policy and propaganda broadcast by publishing houses that pigeonholed his works as both Catholic-mission-like, and provincial regionalist literature (blood-and-soil literature). The breakthrough in reception of his works was achieved in the beginning of the 1980s due to Charles Linsmayer’s publication of anthology of Federer’s texts, which revealed his modern and broad-minded mode of thinking with regard to social issues. Based on selected examples, this article develops and explores the aforementioned hypothesis, indicating a social-critical aspect in Federer’s literary and journalistic work. Following the outline of the autobiographic and historical background, the object of analysis are Federer’s emphasis on social criticism and the postulate of the so-called third way of seeking a solution between capitalism and communism – social market economy, which demonstrate numerous features common with the contemporary Catholic social teaching (Leo XIII’s Rerum novarum, Pius XI’s Quadragesimo anno, Francis’s Sozialenzyklika im Kleinen, Evangelii Gaudium). Therefore, they portray the Swiss writer as a modern social reformer, and his works as a literary presentation of progressive social reforms.

Opis:
A Christian worldview entreats humans to live in ethical relationship with the natural world; our current ecological crisis makes that call of crucial and immediate importance. If humans, and Christians in particular, are to adequately participate in care for creation, then we must proceed with both ecological and theological knowledge about the natural world. In both scientific and theological analyses, we uncover not only creative processes of growth, but elements of chaos and destruction. The carbon cycle, food webs, and evolution are examples of where the earth’s survival depends upon destructive processes. In parallel fashion, God’s activity in Scripture also entails chaos and destructive activity, such as the flood in Genesis, the wisdom of the Book of Job, and Paul’s reflection on creation in Romans. This article argues that humans, called to be co-creators with God, thus need to integrate destructive activity into our framework of what it means to “co-create,” thereby participation in creation in a more holistic manner. Far from unleashing unrestricted destruction on the world, such a framework offers ethical guidelines for destroying and creating in ways that support the overall flourishing of the natural world. -------------- Received: 12/04/2020. The goal of this article is recollection of traditional forms of penance often called; Three Good Deeds: fasting, almsgiving and prayer. Looking at the main object of these reflections from the point of view of social moral theology allows one to see how influential are these three good deeds on one’s life, in the fulfillment of oneself, in the relationship with God as well as in the relationship with others. Apart from the above and through the use of Biblical tradition, teaching of the Fathers and the rich teaching of the Church, it also reflects on their source of vitality from antiquity to modern times. The final part of the research focuses on threats in practicing these three good deeds, which includes: secularism, lost sense of sin, consumerism, and permissivism. It is worth mentioning that this refection gains an additional value during this “year of faith,” especially if interpreted in the context of living faith. Often due to the lack of faith fasting, almsgiving and prayer are forgotten and misunderstood.

Artykuł stanowi podsumowujące ujęcie stanowisk Kościoła katolickiego w stosunku do zagadnień etyki gospodarczej. Przedstawia zmieniające się od pierwszych stuleci naszej ery priorytety w pojmowaniu sytuacji człowieka gospodarującego, przechodząc od klasycznych średniowiecznych rozważań nad moralnym wydźwiękiem lichwy, bogactwa czy handlu poprzez wypływające z ustrojowo-gospodarczych przemian XIX i XX wieku refleksje nad własnością prywatną i wartością ludzkiej pracy, kończąc na problemach współczesnych. Część pierwsza omawia korzenie społecznej nauki Kościoła, które sięgają średniowiecznych pism św. Ambrożego i Św. Augustyna.
The article is a Abstract of opinions of the Catholic Church with regard to the question of business ethics. It is presenting a changing overview of priorities since the early Middle Ages, when the main concern was a problem of usury, richness or trade, through the turbulent times of XIX and XX century, where the main reflection was related to private ownership and value of human work, ending with the contemporary times. The first part discusses the roots of Catholic social teaching, which are dating back to the Middle Ages and writings of Saint Ambrosius and Augustine. The important contribution into social teaching were also the ideas of scholastics - Thomas Aquinas and the late Spanish scholastics. The second part of the paper refers to the classic period in Catholic social teaching, that means since the encyclical Rerum Novarum of the pope Leo XIII, till Laborem Exercens of John Paul II. Then, a short resume of contemporary teaching follows, which includes chosen encyclicals by John Paul II, published after 1989 and also dogmatic point of view of Catholic Church contained in the last edition of Catechism of Catholic.

The aim of the article is to reveal an intragenerational social justice dimension in the Sollicitudo rei socialis encyclical through defining a problem of social underdevelopment. From this perspective, an environmental care is related with current proenvironmental actions which prove improvement of environmental awareness and interest in the intragenerational justice. The article is summed up with pointing out risks of a conducted environmental policy which sometimes seems to show phenomena weakening a status of a humanbeing. Simultaneously, it emphasizes necessity for action which fullfill a intragenrational social justice in a social and economic dimension.

Patriotism is a just love of one’s own nation, and national culture is an environment for personal human growth. Thus the requirement of justice towards this community which has shaped us is to be a part of the nation, showing solidarity and love towards one’s own country. An important duty of every human being is patriotic education and a wise historical policy plays a significant role in this process. Family, school, artists, scouting, non-governmental and local government organizations, sports events and historical re-enactments are elements of patriotic formation for young people. A patriotic attitude should be combined with the requirements of universalism, such as openness and respect for people who belong to other traditions and cultures and to communities that use a different language.
