Opis:
Many devoted and well-educated Catholics begin to doubt the need for the Church. Flooded by the plethora of publications about the Church’s dark pages and scandals in the past and today they feel pain and are ashamed. On the other hand, they realize that the Church can be neither a mistake nor a lie. Undoubtedly, Catholics and Catholic theology need today an honest and serious apology of the Catholic Church that will not conceal any of her true weaknesses. This paper seeks to prove that such an apology is offered by Joseph Ratzinger (1927–2022). It is an attempt to recreate it on the basis of his entire intellectual output. His diagnosis of the Catholic Church is bitterly critical, he indicates many ecclesial problems that seem to be carried over from one generation to the next. At the same time, he provides an original apology of the Catholic Church that can surely be helpful in accepting the bipolar truth about her: God’s real presence has been so many times mediated by the disappointing Church. This article’s final part attempts to critically evaluate the effectiveness of Ratzinger’s apology from the contemporary perspective of ardent Catholics.

Opis:
Unemployment and emigration were the most important and urgent concerns which beset Poland shortly after its rebirth in 1918. The Catholic Church took action in both of these fields, inspired by the teachings of Popes Leo XIII and Pius XI concerning the so-called “social issue.” These inspirations were aptly interpreted and practically implemented by Antoni Julian Nowowiejski, bishop of Płock, known today as a social activist and reformer. This text analyses the specific activities of the Płock clergy in the interwar period, which were supposed to counteract the negative social consequences of the issues mentioned above.

Opis:
The article investigates the persecution of the Catholic Church in the times of Stalinism, when the political power in Poland was largely centralized in the hands of the Communists of Jewish origin, who were sent by Joseph Stalin from Moscow in order to sovietize Poland. The Catholic Church, which had been defending the sovereignty of Poland for centuries, was treated by Com-munists as a greatest enemy of their objectives. The article shows the ruthlessness of the Com-munist regime, whose goal was to weaken the role of the Roman Catholic Church, and to liqui-date its leading institutions, such as the Catholic University of Lublin. It concisely presents main assumptions of the “anticlerical action” which was authorized by Hilary Minc and Jakub Ber-man. The paper contains legal reviews which indicate the illegal behavior of security officers in relation to Catholics, in particular to those of juvenile age. It argues that, with fighting against the Catholicism in Poland, the Communists infringed the law established by themselves. The article is a result of the many months inquiry in several archive institutes in Poland.

The Catholic Church is a strong player in Africa, especially due to its social, medical, educational care and charity giving to African people. Diplomacy of the Holy See is also very concerned with African problems at an international forum. First of all the cause of this involvement is the increasing community of the Catholic faithful in Africa. The paper deals with a few aspects of Catholic commitment for the better future of this marginalized continent and tries to answer the question if the Catholic Church/the Holy See is the real power in Africa. However, there is not explicit answer because of special nature of this entity.

The article discusses important religious motifs that appear in the broad philosophical and artistic work of Miguel de Unamuno, Del sentimiento trágico de la vida en los hombres y en los pueblos. One of them is the problem of immortality, which is one of the most important issues that often appears in the reflections of the Spanish writer. The author distinguishes several levels of immortality: (1) biological, (2) cultural, and (3) species. Unamuno, using the Catholic tradition, navigates various dogmas of Catholic beliefs, while maintaining creative independence in these intellectual explorations. He also changed his mind towards the Catholic Church itself, believing that it limited the field of freedom in philosophical and religious discussions. However, in his late essays, Unamuno defended Christian culture as important for Spanish and European identity. With some reservations, the author’s philosophy of religion and culture can be classified as adequate to irrationalism and existentialism.

In the stream of recent years one can notice that divorces granted by the civil court in Poland constantly grow in number. The author observes that each di-vorce suit results from the tragedy of a matrimonial life, though not always from the fault of a spouse. He dedicates his considerations (1) to show how the Catholic Church defends the indissolubility of marriage, (2) to discuss the prob-lem of these divorced Catholics whose sacramental marriage has not been de-clared invalid by the Church court, (3) to analyze the legal and pastoral situation of these spouses who left their sacramental marriages for living in non-sacramental ones.

Bishop Edward Samsel’s relations with the Church of the East were a major part of his pastoral ministry. As a patriot, he felt the obligation to help the Poles which remained within the borders of the Soviet Union, and suffered the torment of the local life. If possible, he tried to involve himself in the rebirth of religion in Belarus. Most contacts Bp E. Samsel had with the Grodno Diocese which was founded in 1991. The author analyzes the pastoral and material assistance, which was provided by Bp Samsel to resurgent church communities in Belarus, as well as his care for priests and seminarists.

The inspiration to pursue a research topic or to contribute to the research of other scientists often comes from a single remark, thought or sentence. ‘Continuations’ in the heading suggests that this, too, is the case of this paper. It presents early results of a research project undertaken in 2017 to examine the religiousness of high school and academic youth inhabiting different social environments and coming from different regions of Poland (the Silesian, St Cross and Lesser Poland voivodeships). Research of this kind is undertaken relatively often, and usually focuses on similar topics; was it thus necessary to add yet another new project? The inspiration behind it comes from the findings of Fr. Janusz Mariański, an expert on the religiousness of Poles, which he described in numerous publications and in particular in the latest one: Religious activity of Poles in regression, a paper which forms part of the Anniversary Publication of Prof. Andrzej Wójtowicz. In the paper, J. Mariański summarises the results of multiannual sociological research of the topic. His central thesis points to a slow but consistent diminishing – regression – of Poles’ religious activity in the past decade. Whilst it is still possible to talk about a specific uniqueness of Polish religiosity, it does not mean that it will remain so unique in the future.

Unquestionably, the nationalization of Caritas in 1950 was outlawed and its main purpose was to attack the only independent power in the State – the Catholic Church, headed by Primate Stefan Wyszyński as head of the state. Numerous attempts were made in order to limit the influence of the Church on children and the education of the young. Yet, these attempts were failed by the Communists. Almost every caring institution within the Caritas activities was supported by a monastic congregation. In spite of political compulsion of propaganda character, these institutions were still helping people who needed it.

Catholic Church
Opis:
Various aspects of the term Catholic Church can be considered: theological, sociological, legal or politological. For the purpose of this article the defi nition of the Church as formulated by political science will be essential, although in this discipline various connotations exist. The Church is referred to as a denomination, religious community, an interest group or a political entity. Among authors writing about the Church as a denomination are Wolfgang Ernst Böckenförde and Heindrun Abromeit. Both of them focus on the spiritual-religious aspect of Church activities, at the same time emphasizing that political activity is not the principal aim of the Church. Broader theories of Church activities as an interest group are presented by Carolyn M. Warner and Dietrich Hierlemann. Classifying the Catholic Church as an interest group C.M. Warner claims that this institution makes eff orts to get preferential treatment by political authorities, and its goal is to gain certain resources from the economic and political systems. The Church attempts to lobby democratic governments through political parties and other means, as it intends to have an infl uence on the educational system, impose its moral values on society through legislation, or retain certain tax reliefs. The Church tries to provide its members with certain collective goods (such as answers to moral and philosophical dilemmas), affiliation-based (e.g. cult site), or individual incentives (e.g. sacraments). The Catholic Church, therefore, in addition to an organized religion, can be referred to as an untypical interest group D. Hierlemann similarly states that the Church acts as a representative of interests and a lobbyist that attempts to make infl uential contacts, establish good relations with decision makers and play for resources. The Church acting in the secular sphere is subject to the same priciples as other associations (Verbände). This entity tries to promote its interests in the political process. In reference to theories describing the functioning of associations in the lay-political area we can examine the activities of the Church within the political system. From this perspective D. Hierlemann analyzes various forms of lobbying done by the Catholic Church in Poland.

The article deals with the subject of searching the nature of the consecrated virginity in the Church. This analysis is based on the theological and liturgical aspects defined by Ordo Consecrationis Virginum and Ordo Professionis Religiosae. Therefore we take the assumption that the most appropriate criterion of its interpretation in the Christian reality can be found in the principle: lex orandi – lex credendi. From this perspective the consecrated virginity is perceived as positive reality as far as faith celebration is concerned. The liturgy describes virginity as a gift offered to man by God’s people. Faith is also a prize and through the liturgy it is able reach its highest point. Virginity glorified in the Christian reality becomes a present as well as it is not only connected with but also filled with faith. Virginity consecrated under liturgical circumstances gains both ontological and dynamic features typical of worship. This sequentially allows to understand that virginity is not simply the result of ascetic effort, nor it is the physical adornment of a believer. In fact it spreads on the whole person who is being revived by sacraments. It makes them improve by personal commitment marking their route through the history of salvation.

Today, that center is struggling with numerous problems related to the economic and social difficulties, high unemployment, depopulation of villages and towns – which are assigned to the parish, the migration of young people to larger cities and towns, etc. However, it has valuable monuments, first of all the church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Additionally, there is also a historic cemetery. These are treasures that the local community looks after and develops with faith and tradition, enriching to the best of their abilities.
