Opis:
Garnet in heavy-mineral assemblages, occurring in sandstones of the Campanian–Maastrichtian part of the Ropianka (Late Cretaceous–Palaeocene) and Menilite (Oligocene) formations of the Skole Nappe, is present as first-cycle and poly-cycle grains, derived from a proximal source, remote areas and/or from sedimentary rocks of the Skole Basin foreland. The garnets in the formations are compositionally similar, suggesting an origin from the same source rocks. Relatively large amounts of garnet, represented by euhedral or slightly rounded, weakly etched or unetched almandine and spessartine-almandine garnet, and minor pyrope-enriched almandine, were derived directly from a source close to the Skole Basin. These garnets are from sediments, metamorphosed at low- to medium-grade conditions (such as mica-schists, gneisses) and perhaps also granitic bodies. Rounded and variously etched garnets, especially high pyrope-almandine and pyrope-almandine-grossular varieties, but also partly almandine-dominated varieties, are suggested to have been derived from distant sources, such as sedimentary rocks of the Upper Silesian and Małopolska blocks. Rocks, forming uplifted parts of the crystalline basement of Brunovistulicum and/or crystalline domains of the Bohemian Massif, could have been protoliths for part of the almandine-dominated garnet population, whereas pyrope-grossular-almandine garnets may originate from the granulitic, eclogitic or metabasic rocks of the Bohemian Massif. The study shows that analyses of garnet composition, combined with observations on grain textural features and data on the lithology of clasts and pebbles, can permit the determination of sources for different garnet varieties in mixed-provenance populations.

The paper describes research on the effect of precipitation and infiltration on the groundwater recharge of the Palaeogene aquifer. Since the safe yield in the Tylicz region is closely linked to the recharge regime, the dates of occurrence of specific groundwater levels and amplitudes of water table increase and decrease have been characterised. These data have been discussed on the background of precipitation and infiltration rates.

Opis:
The Kropivnik Fucoid Marls of the Polish Outer Carpathians contain numerous bioturbation structures, and comprise thin-bedded sandstones, hard and soft marlstones and muddy to clayey, mainly turbiditic shales. Comparison of three sections elucidated the stratigraphic and sedimentological controls on the distribution of the bioturbation structures, which are most common on the soles of sandstone beds, and within and on the tops of beds of hard marlstone overlain by shale. Most of the bioturbation structures are taxonomically undeterminable. Nevertheless, twenty seven ichnospecies, including one new ichnospecies (Taenidium recurvum), and seven forms of trace fossils of unknown taxonomic affinity were recognised. Most ichnotaxa were observed as individual specimens. Irregular structures apparently formed by the squashing of burrows filled with fluidised fill, called here turbidichnia, are quite common in some marlstone beds in the lower part of the succession. Planolites beverleyensis and Halopoa imbricata are the most frequent trace fossils on the lower surfaces of sandstone beds. Chondrites intricatus, Planolites beverleyensis and Thalassinoides suevicus represent the most common taxa in hard marlstones. Endoreliefs of Scolicia isp. are quite frequent in the top parts of marlstone beds in some parts of the succession. Other ichnotaxa were found either rarely or as single specimens only. The burrowing depth, reaching 15 cm below the tops of normally-graded rhythmic units, together with the relatively rich trace fossil assemblage and common occurrence of Planolites and Thalassinoides, is interpreted as indicating fully oxic conditions at the bottom of the sedimentary basin.

Opis:
The types, abundance and origin of non-opaque heavy minerals from17 samples of sandstones and granule conglomerates of the Godula Beds, Upper Istebna Sandstone, Ciężkowice and Cergowa Sandstone (Upper Cretaceous–Paleogene) of the Beskid Śląski Mts. are described in this study. The descriptions are based on standard optical petrographic investigations and on scanning electronmicroscope (including electron microprobe) analysis. Garnet, rutile, zircon and tourmaline are the most common types of heavyminerals. Monazite and apatite occur subordinately, whereas epidote and spinel are sporadic. The heavy minerals from the Middle and Upper Godula Beds and the Upper Istebna Sandstone indicate original derivation mainly from metamorphic rocks of granulite and partly eclogite facies. Metasediments were significant constituents, with subordinate granitoids and hornfelses. Granitoids and corresponding pegmatites and aplites, as well as metapelites and metapsammites, appear to be the primary crystalline parent rocks of the Lower Godula Beds and the Ciężkowice Sandstone. Garnet-mica schists with subordinate granitoids and their pegmatites are interpreted as the main crystalline parent rocks of the Cergowa Sandstone. Sporadic chromian spinels and chromian pyrope indicate derivation from mafic and ultramafic rocks. Co-occurrence of rounded and fresh unabraded grains (sometimes euhedral) suggests a mixed provenance for the clastic material, both from crystalline and older sedimentary rocks.

Opis:
The Carpathian Flysch Belt represents a Paleogene accretionary wedge (External Western Carpathians  – EWC) located in front of the narrow Pieniny Klippen Belt zone and the Cretaceous Central Western Carpathian nappe stack. The Flysch Belt is formed of several nappes thrust over the slope of the European Platform in the Miocene. This study is focused on the uppermost Magura Nappe, which consists of the Rača, Bystrica and Krynica subunits. As there are no relics of pre-Miocene oceanic crust in the EWC, the sedimentary rocks of the Flysch Belt are the only source of information available about the Alpine collisional events. U-Pb geochronology was applied to detrital rutile from sandstones of the Magura Nappe in order to better understand the closure of the Alpine Tethys in the Western Carpathians. Ten medium-sized sandstone samples were collected across the Bystrica and Krynica subunits in the Nowy Targ region in southern Poland. The samples represent synorogenic clastic sediments with inferred deposition ages between the Late Cretaceous and Oligocene. Approximately 200 rutile grains were separated from each sandstone sample and around half of them were selected for further analyses. The age and appearance (shape, inclusions, zoning etc.) of the dated rutile show significant variations, suggesting derivation from various sources. The most prominent age peaks represent the Variscan (c. 400–280 Ma) and Alpine (c. 160–90 Ma) tectonic events which are well-pronounced in all but the oldest dated sample. It is also noteworthy that four distinct Alpine signals were detected in our rutile data set. The two most prominent peaks with ages of 137–126 Ma and 115–105 Ma are found in majority of the samples. In two sandstone samples, deposited between the Eocene –Oligocene and the Late Cretaceous–Paleocene, the youngest peak of 94–90 Ma appears. Another peak of 193–184 Ma is also present in these two samples, as well as in another sandstone deposited between the Paleocene and the Eocene. In addition, most samples show few Proterozoic ages (approx. 1770 Ma, 1200 Ma, 680 Ma and 600 Ma). Since metamorphic rutile requires relatively high pressure to crystallize, its formation in the course of an orogeny is possible in a subduction setting. Hence, our new age data may reflect tectonic events related to subduction of oceanic crust and overlying sediments. Tentatively, we propose that recognizable events include the Jurassic subduction of the Meliata Ocean (~180–155 Ma), the Early Cretaceous thrust stacking of the Veporic and Gemeric domains (140–105 Ma) and possibly the Late Cretaceous subduction of the Váh Ocean (c. 90 Ma). In addition to dating, the Zr content of the rutile formed during the Alpine orogeny was measured by electron microprobe at the AGH University in Krakow. The amount of Zr varies between 37–420 ppm in almost all grains, with the exception of 4 rutile grains where ~1100 ppm was reached. The Zr in rutile thermometer, based on the approach of Kohn (2020) was used to calculate the possible metamorphic conditions at 450–650°C and >7.5 kbar. This data set corroborates formation of the Alpine rutile under relatively high pressure and rather low to moderate pressure/temperature gradient, i.e. typical of subduction-related tectonic environments.

Opis:
The research on the Oligocene succession of the Central Carpathian Paleogene Basin (CCPB) in the Kacwin region focused on sedimentological and palynofacies analyses. Observations were carried out in natural exposures along three streams flowing in the Polish Spisz: Kacwinianka, Łapszanka and Kacwiński. Three main groups of lithofacies have been distinguished: coarse-grained, mixed and sandy-grained, and fine-grained. The lithofacies are characterized by variable sedimentary structures, e.g. massive structure, horizontal lamination, ripple cross-lamination, hummocky cross-stratification, deformation structure. Sedimentological analyses showed that structures typical for turbidity currents and those characteristic of relatively shallow deposition (HCS, wave ripples) could coexist in the investigated succession interpreted as typical for turbidity currents influenced by storm waves. This indicates relatively shallow-water environments. The palynofacies analysis enabled identification of the following components: black wood, brown wood, cortex, resin, sporomorphs, cuticle, algae, dinoflagellates and AOM. A high proportion of black wood and low diversity of components point to an origin related to turbidity currents. Furthermore, results of the palynofacies analysis have allowed determining that, during the deposition of the CCPB sediments in the Polish Spisz area, the distance between the deposition area and the source area became relatively large. The biostratigraphic analysis of dinoflagellate cysts from the Podhale Basin (Szaflary, Zakopane, and lower Chochołów beds) indicates an Early Rupelian age. Moreover, kerogen analysis in the UV was applied for the first time to study the CCPB succession. As a result, reworking was documented, so far unrecognized by other methods, and the mutual verification of the obtained results was possible.

Opis:
Variegated shales in the Early Eocene hemipelagic deposits of the Subsilesian series, Polish part of the Western Carpathians, have yielded rich siliceous microfossils comprising abundant radiolarians and rare diatoms. Forty-three radiolarian taxa have been recognised. One new radiolarian species, Amphisphaera subsilesianensis n. sp. was described. The assemblage represents the Phormocyrtis striata striata radiolarian Zone of the tropical oceans. The deposits investigated have also yielded abundant agglutinated foraminifera which correlate with the lower Eocene Saccamminoides carpathicus foraminiferal Zone. The radiolarian assemblage comprises a low content of taxa characterising cool, oligotrophic water masses which also occur in the upper Paleocene deposits of the Subsilesian series. Most part of the assemblage is represented by abundant radiolarian species characteristic of tropical domain, which may indicate the incursion of warm water masses into the Subsilesian Basin during the Early Eocene Climatic Optimum Period.
Radiolarie zostały znalezione w zielonkawych łupkach ilastych należących do serii łupków pstrych, ponad pierwszą odsłaniającą się w profilu wkładką bentonitu (Fig. 1C). Badany zespół radiolarii obejmuje 43 gatunki należące do czterech rodzin z rzędu Nassellaria (Trissocyclidae, Arthostrobiidae, Pterocorythidae i Eucyrtidiidae) i do pięciu rodzin z rządu Spumellaria (Actinommidae, Phacodiscidae, Sponguridae, Spongodiscidae i Porodiscidae) (Figs 3-6). Wyróżniono także nowy gatunek - Amphisphaera subsilesianensis n. sp. (Fig. 3G-I). Na podstawie obecności wielu charakterystycznych gatunków promienic jak: Calocycloma ampulla (Ehrenberg), Buryella clinata Foreman, Phormocyrtis striata striata Brandt, Lychnocanium bellum (Clark & Campbell), L. auxilla Foreman, L. babylonis (Clark & Campbell), Amphisphaera minor (Clark & Campbell), Amphisphaera coronata (Ehrenberg), badany zespół zaliczono do zony radiolariowej Phormocyrtis striata striata, wyróżnionej przez Riedel & Sanfilippo (1987) dla regionów tropikalnych. Współwystępowanie zespołów otwornic aglutynujących wraz z radiolariami umożliwiło korelację tego poziomu radiolariowego z poziomem otwornicowym Saccamminoides carpathicus (Geroch & Nowak, 1984). Opisany zespół radiolarii wskazuje wyraźnie na ingresję ciepłych wód powierzchniowych do basenu podśląskiego we wczesnym eocenie, w których mogły żyć gatunki tropikalne i subtropikalne. Podobne zespoły taksonów występują w utworach jednostki skolskiej należących do tych samych poziomów biostratygraficznych (Bąk et al., 1997). Może to wskazywać na zmianę termiki wód oceanicznych na skalę regionalną, która mogła być związana z wczesnoeoceńskim optimum klimatycznym.

The Kamyanyi (Kaminnyi) Potik Unit (Nappe) is the most internal and structurally-highest unit of the Fore-Marmarosh units, and in many places is directly covered by the Marmarosh Nappes of the Marmarosh Crystalline Massif. Chyvchyn Mount is built of this unit and forms a separate tectonic cap (Chyvchyn Mt. Klippe). It consists of the Upper Jurassic/lowermost Cretaceous Chyvchyn Formation, composed mainly of basic volcanic rocks, and the Tithonian-Early Cretaceous Kamyanyi Potik Formation, represented by calcareous and/or turbiditic deposits containing volcanic material. Geological mapping showed that this complex forms a tectonic klippe, which consists of four small tectonic thrust slices. Structurally, the lowermost one is represented by thin-bedded micritic limestones with cherts, and is interbedded with coarse/fine-grained calcareous pyroclastic turbidites (flysch). The second thrust slice is composed of calcareous-pyroclastic breccia with blocks of limestone, basalt, and chert (radiolarite?), which occur within a pyroclastic matrix and of coral limestones with basalt fragments and pyroclastic intercalations. The third thrust slice is constructed of breccia with a pyroclastic and volcanic matrix and clasts of effusive rocks and limestone. The fourth thrust slice – the highest – is represented by massive basaltic pillow lavas. Sedimentologically, the volcano-sedimentary complex represents a whole spectrum of marine mass-movement deposits, from debris flows through proximal turbidites to distal ones, which were formed during latest Jurassic/earliest Cretaceous time in the Outer Dacide-Severinide part of the Carpathian basins.

Opis:
The sediments of the upper Eocene (Priabonian)-lower Oligocene (Rupelian) of the Siary zone in the Magura nappe (basically Magura Beds in glauconitic facies) display features indicating their origination in sedimentary conditions quite different from those in which coeval sediments from the other parts of the Carpathians were deposited. This paper aims at interpreting the sedimentary conditions on the basis of lithofacies, their vertical and lateral distribution, foraminifera assemblages, CaCO3 and organic matter content determined in six transects through the entire Siary zone, the contents of main and trace elements determined in 11 samples from one section and different published data. Lithofacies and the present day shape of the Siary zone suggest sedimentation of the entire succession in a strongly elongated confined basin. Facies distribution indicates deposition on a submarine ramp that gradually expanded to NE and E along the slopes of the outer basin margin. Assemblages of foraminifera suggest location of the basin bottom below the foraminiferal lysocline. Moreover, foraminifera together with bioturbation structures and sediment geochemistry indicate sedimentation mainly in weakly oxic, close to dysoxic bottom waters. The differences in facies in relation to the coeval deposits of the other parts of the Carpathians are interpreted as resulting mainly from intense resedimentation in the Siary zone during the Priabonian-Rupelian, and in part from the relatively low calcium carbonate supply. Gradual expansion of resedimentation towards NE, followed by a decrease in the supply of coarse-grained material is regarded as due to lithosphere rollback beneath the evolving Carpathians. This process is interpreted as of superior significance in controlling se--Rupelian not only in the Siary zone but also in the entire Magura basin. This was the factor responsible for forcing the subsidence of the Magura basin, accretionary wedge development in its inner part, and fore-bulging of the area at some distance in front of the zone of the rolling back lithosphere, i.e. in the source area of the sedimentary succession in question. Finally, this process also caused drowning and burying of the source area.

The Futoma Member (Oligocene, Rupelian) of the Menilite Formation is present only in the northern part of the Skole Nappe. Some diatomitic layers of this member in the Nowy Borek section contain coarse-grained detrital material composed of a variety of metamorphic, volcanic and sedimentary rock fragments. The material derives from primary and secondary sources. Most abundant are debris of metamorphic rocks, mostly gneisses and mica schists. The metamorphic origin of these rocks is confirmed by the composition of heavy mineral assemblages and garnet chemistry. These rocks could have been transported from a local source located close to the margin of the Skole Basin or within that basin. The volcanic rocks reflect Paleogene volcanic activity that was widespread in the Carpathian region. Cherts, which could have been subjected to synsedimentary erosion, may have been derived from the older portions of the same formation.

Well-preserved foraminiferids have been found in the Chmielnik-Grabówka section (Skole Nappe, Polish Carpathians). The Abathomphalus mayaroensis (late Maastrichtian) and Racemiguembelina fructicosa (earlylate Maastrichtian) standard planktonic foraminiferal biozones have been recognized, based on the occurrence of their respective index species. Sediments of the R. fructicosa Zone contain diatoms, which are a rare component of Cretaceous flysch microfossil assemblages in the Carpathians. The diatom frustules and some foraminiferid tests are pyritized, probably after burial in the sediment, below the redox boundary or in the oxygen-deficient microenvironment inside the frustules or tests of microfossils; the presence of trace fossils and bioturbational structures in the same bed indicate an oxygenated sea floor.
