Opis:
Three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) plays important role in engines development. The mixture formation in a direct-injection piston engines poses a huge challenge in successful simulations of the engine processes. It is due to the fact that the spray as a two-phase flow complicates the computational process. Moreover, this multiphase flow is not uniform. Three main zones, depending on the distance from the nozzle exit are visible when a liquid is injected. Very dense so called “thick” in a direct vicinity of the injector hole, than “thin” as a result of pri-mary breakup downstream the injector and finally in the certain distance from the injector appears “very thin” region as a result of secondary breakup. It is important to take into account that the liquid phase in various regimes behaves differently and is under influence of different phenomena. The modelling approach needs to take in to consideration all those elements. This paper focuses on presentation of the theory and numerical models for primary and secondary breakup phenomena. The primary breakup is a process that results from a combination of three mechanisms: turbu-lence within liquid phase, implosion of cavitation’s bubbles and aerodynamic forces acting on a liquid jet. Secondary breakup regime occurs mainly due to the aerodynamic interactions between the liquid and the gaseous phase.

Opis:
In order to maintain a competitive edge, the turbomachinery industry has to rely increasingly on design and analysis methods based on numerical simulation of flow. The European funded APPACET was set up to study the application of turbulence modelling and the simulation of unsteady interactions to provide guidelines for the application of CFD to design. This paper shows the results of computations of four of the test cases studied by the project. The importance of grid refinement has been clearly demonstrated, but no evidence was found that one family of turbulence models could be definitely better than the other. Compared to steady results, unsteady time-averaged solutions have not shown any major improvement in accuracy. However unsteady flow phenomena generating losses within each blade row have been captured and partly explained.

Opis:
The numerical simulation was based on the computational fluid dynamics formalism in order to identify the change of temperature in rock strata during underground coal gasification (UCG). The calculations simulated the coal gasification process using oxygen and water vapour as a gasification agent in 120 hours. Based on the selected software (Ansys-Fluent) a model of underground coal gasification (UCG) process was developed. The flow of the gasification agent, the description of the turbulence model, the heat-exchange model and the method of simulation of chemical reactions of gasification are presented herein.

Opis:
The article presents modeling of the work environment microclimate using numerical methods. The numerical models adopted for the calculations were based on an office located in the building of the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the Czestochowa University of Technology. Six computational variations were made that differed in the heating method, air supply and ventilation. The results of the numerical analysis for one of the models were compared with the test in the assumed measuring point recording temperature and relative humidity. The per-formed numerical analysis allows for a relatively quick assessment of the influence of the adopted boundary conditions on the formation of the microclimate in the work environment.

Opis:
Results of numerical calculations of heat exchange in a nuclear heating detector for nuclear reactors are presented in this paper. The gamma radiation is generated in nuclear reactor during fission and radiative capture reactions as well as radioactive decay of its products. A single-cell calorimeter has been designed for application in the MARIA research reactor in the National Centre for Nuclear Research (NCBJ) in Świerk near Warsaw, Poland, and can also be used in the Jules Horowitz Reactor (JHR), which is under construction in the research centre in Cadarache, France. It consists of a cylindrical sample, which is surrounded by a gas layer, contained in a cylindrical housing. Additional calculations had to be performed before its insertion into the reactor. Within this analysis, modern computational fuid dynamics (CFD) methods have been used for assessing important parameters, for example, mean surface temperature, mean volume temperature, and maximum sample (calorimeter core) temperature. Results of an experiment performed at a dedicated out-of-pile calibration bench and results of numerical modelling validation are also included in this paper.

Opis:
A review of studies on the cyclone separators using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) that have been published so far indicates that research has primarily involved four numerical models: k-ε, k-ε RNG, Reynolds Stress Model (RSM) and Large Eddy Simulations (LES). The aim of this paper was to assess the precision and reliability of these models based on a cyclone used as part of cyclone suspension preheater. The assessment concerned the value of pressure drop and separation efficiency of the raw meal. Results obtained through computation were compared to those obtained in a real clinker burning installation. The obtained results showed that in the case of cyclone separators used in cyclone suspension preheater the RSM model (in the case of separation efficiency) and LES model (in the case of pressure drop) were most accurate. The performed analysis and its conclusions may prove useful for defining the strategy of numerical research aimed at optimizing the structure of cyclones used in cyclone suspension preheater.

Opis:
The paper addresses the issues of quantification and understanding of Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFC) based on numerical modelling carried out under four European, EU, research projects from the 7FP within the Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking, FCH JU, activities. It is a short review of the main projects’ achievements. The goal was to develop numerical analyses at a single cell and stack level. This information was integrated into a system model that was capable of predicting fuel cell phenomena and their effect on the system behaviour. Numerical results were analysed and favourably compared to experimental results obtained from the project partners. At the single SOFC level, a static model of the SOFC cell was developed to calculate output voltage and current density as functions of fuel utilisation, operational pressure and temperature. At the stack level, by improving fuel cell configuration inside the stack and optimising the operation conditions, thermal stresses were decreased and the lifetime of fuel cell systems increased. At the system level, different layouts have been evaluated at the steady-state and by dynamic simulations. Results showed that increasing the operation temperature and pressure improves the overall performance, while changes of the inlet gas compositions improve fuel cell performance.
