Opis:
The presentation of CFX-TASCflow code possibilities for the turbomachinery design is the main aim of this study. In the first part of the work the compressor design process is presented. Next, CFX-TASCflow possibilities in predicting unstable operating conditions (surge) are shown. The one-stage, radial blower installed in the Institute of Turbomachinery TU of Lodz has been chosen owing to the available numerous experimental data. The pump calculations discussed in the third part concern a comparison of different turbulence models with the experimental results. In the last part devoted to the turbine design, the code usefulness is proved on the examples of the last stage design process.

Opis:
Mechanisms of formation of the tir leakage over shrouded and unshrouded rotor blades are described in the paper. The loss diagrams for these two types of leakage in a wide range of cascade inlet and outlet flow angles are also plotted. They are obtained in a theoretical way from a model of stream mixing with the help of simplifying assumptions concerning the load of the rotor profile. Results of numerical investigations based on a 3D RANS solver FlowER are also presented in the paper. They extend on the effects of geometrical and flow parameters of the cascade (stage or stage group) on the development of flow losses in the leakage-dominated region as well as on the interaction of tip leakage flow with secondary flows. The tip clearance size, the level of flow turning in the cascade, incidence angle and the effect of relative motion of the blades and endwall are considered here in the case of unshrouded free-tip blades. In the case of shrouded rotor blades the tip leakage mass flow rate and its direction on the re-entry to the blade-to-blade passage. Since the tip leakage non-uniformities are hardly dissipated within the blade row where they originate, the interaction of the tip leakage with the flow in the downstream stator is considered. Same investigations also take into account the effect of relative motion of the stator and rotor blades.

Opis:
Purpose This study focuses on one of the key design aspects of mine ventilation fans, i.e. the selection of an appropriate aerofoil blade profile for the fan blades in order to enhance the energy efficiency of axial flow mine ventilation fans, using CFD simulations. Methods Computational simulations were performed on six selected typical aerofoil sections using CFD code ANSYS Fluent 6.3.26 at angles of attack varying from 0 to 21 at an interval of 3 and at Reynolds number Re = 3 × 106, and various aerody-namic parameters, viz. coefficients of lift (Cl) and drag (Cd) as a function of angle of attack (α) were determined to assess the efficiency of the aerofoils. Results The study revealed that the angle of attack has a significant effect on the lift and drag coefficients and stall condition oc-curred at α values of 12 and 15 in most of the aerofoils. Based on the criterion of higher lift to drag ratio (Cl/Cd), a blade profile was chosen as the most efficient one for mine ventilation fans. Practical implications This study forms a basis for selecting appropriate blade profiles for the axial flow fans used for ventilation in mining industry. Originality/ value The application of an appropriate aerofoil blade profile will impart energy efficiency to the mine ventilation fans and thereby result in energy saving in mine ventilation.

Opis:
In axial ventilation fans, the generation of a uniform flow velocity is desirable for better efficiency. To that end, different fan blade types have been developed to achieve better flow uniformity. This article aimed to characterize the flow distribution and its uniformity in four blade designs, namely constant chord, tapered blade, skewed blade, and tapered skewed blade, using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The study employs an iterative study where key study decisions are made as the study progresses. The study began with the selection of a blade profile for the study. A comparative study between the NACA seven-digit and four-digit series was conducted and for its higher flow throughput, the four-digit airfoil profile was selected. Next, with 30 and 40° Angle of Attack (AoA), the constant chord blade flow pattern is characterized. At 40° AoA flow disturbance and high-velocity spots were observed establishing the problem statement. Following that, three optimization strategies (tapering, skewing, and taper skewing) were applied in the design, and the flow pattern of each design was studied. Using a dispersion study a flow uniformity comparison between the models conducted. The property trade-off between three key performance indicators: efficiency, flow rate, and flow uniformity studied. The result shows an axial fan having a higher efficiency doesn't necessarily mean it has higher throughput whereas lower flow dispersion relates to the system's higher efficiency. Therefore, it can be concluded that seeking higher efficiency and flow uniformity in the design and development of axial fans comes with system throughput trade-off.

Opis:
This paper presents the results of a numerical investigation into the effect of blade trailing-edge thickness and shape on the performance of a rotor ring model of axial fan. The numerical simulations carried out under this investigation provided the performance characteristics of efficiency, working medium power, and total pressure increase in the function of the volumetric flow rate of the rotor ring. The investigated blade trailing-edge thickness values were 1 mm, 2 mm, and 3 mm. The models for the simulation series were developed with rounded and sharp blade trailing edges, for all thickness values thereof. The rounded trailing blade edges were modelled in the form of an arc over which the conditions of tangency with the upper and lower contours of the airfoil were imposed. The blades of the modelled blade fan were designed with the NACA 65-810 airfoil. To verify the applied turbulence model and mesh settings, experimental tests of the model rotor ring were performed on an axial fan test bed. The obtained experimental data was compared with numerical results. The results showed a significant impact of the thickness and shape of the blade trailing edge on the performance characteristics of axial fans.
W niniejszej pracy przedstawiono wyniki numerycznego badania wpływu grubości i kształtu krawędzi spływu łopatki wirnikowej na charakterystyki pracy modelowego wieńca wirnikowego wentylatora osiowego. W toku symulacji numerycznych uzyskiwano charakterystykę sprawności, mocy oraz przyrostu ciśnienia całkowitego w funkcji objętościowego natężenia przepływu przez wieniec wirnikowy. Przyjęte do analizy grubości krawędzi spływu łopatki wynosiły 1 mm, 2 mm, 3 mm. Modele do serii symulacji numerycznych wykonano dla zaokrąglonych i niezaokrąglonych krawędzi spływu o podanych wyżej grubościach. Zaokrąglone krawędzie spływu odwzorowywano w postaci łuku, na który narzucono warunki styczności do górnego i dolnego obrysu profilu definiującego kształt łopatki. Łopatki modelowego wieńca wirnikowego zbudowano w oparciu o profil NACA 65-810. Na potrzeby sprawdzenia poprawności przyjętego modelu turbulencji oraz ustawień siatki przeprowadzono badania doświadczalne modelowego wieńca wirnikowego na stanowisku do badań wentylatorów osiowych. Uzyskane dane eksperymentalne zestawiono z wynikami numerycznymi. Przedstawione wyniki wykazały istotny wpływ grubości i kształtu krawędzi spływu łopatki wirnikowej na charakterystyki pracy wentylatora osiowego.
