Opis:
Hydrodynamic cavitation is a phenomenon that can be used in the water treatment process. For this purpose, venturis or orifices varying in geometry are used. Studying this phenomenon under experimental conditions is challenging due to its high dynamics and difficulties in measuring and observing the phase transition of the liquid. For this reason, the CFD method was used to study the phenomenon of hydrodynamic cavitation occurring in water flow through the orifice and then analyze flow parameters for different boundary conditions. The research was performed for four different orifice geometries and two defined fluid pressure values at the inlet, based on a computational 2D model of the research object created in Ansys Fluent software. As a result of the numerical simulation, the distribution of fluid velocity and pressure and volume fraction of the gas phase were obtained. A qualitative and quantitative analysis of the phenomenon of hydrodynamic cavitation under the considered flow conditions was conducted for the defined orifice geometries. The largest cavitation zone and thus the largest volume fraction of the gas phase was obtained for the orifice diameter of 2 mm with a sharp increase in diameter. However, the geometry with a linear change in diameter provided the largest volume fraction of the gas phase per power unit.

Opis:
This paper deals with CFD simulation and experimental study of ultrasonic flowmeters. A mathematical model of an ultrasonic flowmeter (USM) was built for studying the errors of flow measurement in disturbed flows. The method of defining the position coordinates of the acoustic paths and their weighting factors was improved based on the Gauss-Jacobi method of integration (i.e. the weighting function was improved) which provided the possibility to raise the accuracy of the turbulent flow velocity integration. The effectiveness of the improved method was verified using the Salami functions. New methodology for improving the mathematical model of USM is proposed. According to this methodology the dependence of the calibration factor on the Reynolds number is introduced into the model. A technique for studying the errors of USM in disturbed flows was developed on the basis of the proposed methodology. The developed technique was verified by comparing the CFD simulation results for a 3D model of an acting USM with the experimental results for this meter obtained by means of a reference test rig. The deviation of the simulation results from the obtained experimental data is not more than 1 %. Recommendations on defining the pipe straight lengths for the double-path chordal flowmeters were developed on the basis of the investigation results.

Opis:
Wyniki symulacji CFD przedstawiono w postaci map i profili prędkości osiowej.
Results of the Large Eddy Simulation for Taylor-Couette flow are presented in the paper. The numerical simulations of single-phase flow for Newtonian fluid (water) were carried out. In the Taylor-Couette flow medium passed between two соахіаl cylinders. The outer cylinder was stationary while the inner cylinder rotated at the constant angular speed ω = 1.05; 2.43; 9.42 [rad/s], The final results were presented in a form of ахіаl velocity maps and profiles.

Opis:
Operation of a passive autocatalytic hydrogen recombiner (PAR) has been investigated by means of computational fluid dynamics methods (CFD). The recombiner is a self-active and self-adaptive device used to remove hydrogen from safety containments of light water nuclear reactors (LWR) by means of a highly exothermic reaction with oxygen at the surface of a platinum or palladium catalyst. Different turbulence models (k-ω, k-ε, intermittency, RSM) were applied in numerical simulations of : gas flow, heat and mass transport and chemical surface reactions occurring in PAR. Turbulence was found to improve mixing and mass transfer and increase hydrogen recombination rate for high gas flow rates. At low gas flow rates, simulation results converged to those obtained for the limiting case of laminar flow. The large eddy simulation technique (LES) was used to select the best RANS (Reynolds average stress) model. Comparison of simulation results obtained for two- and three-dimensional computational grids showed that heat and mass transfer occurring in PAR were virtually two-dimensional processes. The effect of hydrogen thermal diffusion was also discussed in the context of possible hydrogen ignition inside the recombiner.

Opis:
The whirlpool separator, used for hot trub separation, is prevalent in the brewing industry. It is a kind of a hydrocyclone inside of which a tea leaf effect occurs, which is sediment accumulation into a cone shape at the central part of the tank’s bottom. This manner of sediment accumulation is caused by the secondary flow occurring in the so-called Ekman boundary layer. This article is a summary of the research, which has been conducted for many years and involved observation, simulation and experimental research on the recognition and formation of the secondary flow accumulating the sediment cone. Secondary flows occurring in a whirlpool were identified through CFD simulation and PIV experiments, and are presented in this paper. Based on their location and direction, an attempt to determine their impact on the separation process taking place in the whirlpool has been made. The secondary flow identification methods proposed in this paper can be successfully applied in other solutions, e. g. structural ones, which involve rotational-flow-based separation.

Opis:
This work is an attempt to study the behaviour of fluid in the mixing vessel with a two-bladed or four-bladed impeller. The working fluid is complex, of a shear-thinning type and the Oswald model is used to describe the fluid viscosity. The study was accomplishedby numerically solving the governing equations of momentum and continuity. These equations were solved for the following range of conditions: 50–1000 for the Reynolds number, 0–0.15 for the baffle length ratio, and the number of impeller blades 2 and 4. The simulations were done for the steady state and laminar regime. The results show that the increase in baffle length (by increasing the ratio baffle length ratio) decreases the fluid velocity in the vessel. Increasing the speed of rotation of the impeller and/or increasing the number of blades improves the mixing process. Also, the length of the baffles does not affect the consumed power.

The work involved the mass transfer in the segmented flow generated in a T-type microreactor. The reaction course was monitored by changing a color of bromothymol blue while neutralizing NaOH with CH3COOH. The heterogeneity in distribution of concentrations and the presence of poor mixing zones were observed during the analysis of photos. The presence of these zones was confirmed usinf CFD techniques. The relationship between the reaction rate and a value of energy dissipation was also shown.
