    The article looks at the issue of the so-called cryptocurrencies, which are one of the main determinants influencing the functioning of contemporary monetary systems. It is an instrument widely used by financial investors. Due to their advantages they are often seen as the currency of the future. On the other hand, there are numerous controversies related to cryptocurrencies, mainly regarding their legal status and conceptual difficulties. The aim of the article is to elaborate on cryptocurrencies: their definitions, main features, and methods of creation. Next, some possible applications and their advantages and disadvantages, are discussed.

    The article provides a general overview of blockchain technology and its influence on cryptocurrency development. It is based on asymmetric cryptology, peer-to-peer technology, hash functions, consensus mechanism, and smart contracts. Since 2008, when Satoshi Nakamoto published online the Bitcoin blueprint, cryptocurrency market has grown. There are more than 1000 cryptocurrencies now (e.g. Ethereum, Dogecoin, Monero), as well as many stock exchange markets, exchange offices and bitcoin cash machines. It is also possible to “mine” cryptocurrencies by yourself, however special hardware solutions are required. The author claims that cryptocurrency has redefined the way of thinking and viewing the concept of money, and it will expand even further.

    The main objective of the paper is to provide an answer to the question whether new technologies such as blockchain that enter various spheres of public life are safe for users and what impact they have on national legislations. Cryptocurrencies, which are based on blockchain technology, can be used as a means of payment, investment or capital accumulation. Therefore, blockchain becomes more and more popular. The main research method used in the paper consists of the analysis of legislation and jurisprudence as well as linguistic and purposive interpretation which affects the functioning of blockchain and cryptocurrencies. The introductory part of the paper contains a general historical outline and basic principles related to blockchain technology. Real and potential threats posed by the discussed technology are also discussed in the paper as well as the question whether governments or, more broadly, the international community, offer sufficient level of protection against risks related to the use of new technologies such as blockchain and cryptocurrencies. Using blockchain to streamline logistic activities or to speed up transactions is useful in itself, but in the hands of private entities the technology may pose a risk of losing funds if not properly secured. The financial market is and should be supervised and controlled by the state which is the guarantor of economic freedom. Another vital question is whether legislators keep up with the advances in technology. It seems that the development of blockchain technology triggers development of new legal regulations. The more blockchain technology enters everyday life, the more legal documents appear in the form of case law, legal provisions, opinions etc. The role of these documents is to regulate, define and specify new technologies as they appear.

    Współczesny świat, oparty w dużej mierze na szeroko pojętej informatyzacji, stawia przed ludźmi coraz szersze wymagania m.in. w zakresie nowych, cyfrowych form wymiany. Wraz z wprowadzeniem do obiegu kryptowaluty „Bitcoin” zmieniło się postrzeganie pieniądza jako fizycznego elementu służącego do wyrażania wartości danego dobra. Wraz z tą zmianą konieczne stało się przystosowywanie krajowego prawa w Polsce oraz w innych państwach do obowiązujących warunków. Obserwacja i analiza tego zjawiska pozwalają sprawdzić, jakie państwa radzą sobie z tym nowym trendem lepiej, a jakie gorzej, jak również stwierdzić poziom zaawansowania technicznego danego kraju w tym aspekcie. Szczególne istotne jest tu podkreślenie roli Polski, Unii Europejskiej, Wielkiej Brytanii, Stanów Zjednoczonych oraz Chin i wskazanie daleko idących wniosków na przyszłość w zakresie rozwoju walut kryptograficznych oraz walut cyfrowych CBDC.
    The modern world, based largely on broadly understood computerization, places more and more demands on people in terms of new, digital forms of exchange. With the introduction of the cryptocurrency "Bitcoin", the perception of money as a physical element used to express the value of a given good has changed. With this change, it became necessary to adapt national law in Poland and other countries to the applicable conditions. Observation and analysis of this phenomenon allows us to check which countries are coping with this new trend better and which are worse. Moreover, it allows us to determine the level of technical advancement of a given country in this aspect. It is particularly important to emphasize the role of Poland, the European Union, Great Britain, the United States and China and to indicate far-reaching conclusions for the future in the development of cryptographic currencies and central bank digital currencies (CBDC).

    W artykule podjęta została analiza potencjału wykorzystania technologii blockchain dla wzmocnienia bezpieczeństwa państwa, którego gwarantem jest silna i sprawnie funkcjonująca armia. Na początku autor dokonuje charakterystyki rozwiązań, które jako pierwsze zostały zaimplementowane w 2008 roku wraz z powstaniem Bitcoina. Technologia łańcucha bloków, określana jako najważniejsze osiągnięcie ludzkości od momentu powstania internetu. Coraz częściej znajduje zastosowanie w takich obszarach jak: zarządzanie płatnościami, digitalizacja i przechowywanie umów, czy też w sektorze prywatnym, gdzie kluczową rolę odgrywa bezpieczeństwo danych. Dostępne raporty i opracowania wskazują, że intensywne prace nad wdrożeniem technologii w funkcjonowanie swoich armii prowadzą Stany Zjednoczone, Federacja Rosyjska oraz Chińska Republika Ludowa. Z kolei takie kraje jak Korea Południowa czy Indie w 2019 roku rozpoczęły programy pilotażowe, które finalnie mają także doprowadzić do implementacji technologii łańcucha bloków w ich armiach. Stąd też rodzi się pytanie, jakie militarne zastosowanie ma lub może mieć w dającej się przewidzieć przyszłości, technologia łańcucha bloków i jak jej wykorzystanie przez armie może przyczynić się do poprawy bezpieczeństwa państwa? W prezentowanym studium wyróżnione zostały trzy następujące obszary potencjalnego zastosowania: bezpieczeństwo w cyberprzestrzeni, zarządzanie łańcuchem dostaw oraz bardziej efektywna i niezawodna komunikacja.

    Blockchain is one of the most revolutionary technologies of the 21st century, which is still under development, and whose potential is not yet fully exploited. Although blockchain gained importance in 2009, scientists and entrepreneurs are still at an early stage of understanding its mechanisms and fully appreciating its potential, especially from the perspective of the technical challenges and limitations of the technology. Blockchain fi nds a variety of applications, especially in areas that have so far been based on third-party transactions in order to maintain a certain level of trust. Although blockchain is a promising technology for the reorganisation of business processes and many industrial applications, it still has many weaknesses despite various implementations in many forms. An innovative element, and one of the most attractive functions, of blockchain is intelligent contracts, as they reduce or even completely eliminate the administrative costs associated with the lack of trust in the transaction. However, the existing software that is built on this infrastructure has many shortcomings and unfortunately, combined with the lack of maturity of the scripting language to write the contract representation in the computer language, leads to errors or gaps in security that are not noticed or addressed by the author of the script. So far, no blockchain-based system has been completely broken. Nevertheless, phishing is the main trend in the operation of criminals in blockchain networks. Research has shown that over $115 million has been stolen from nearly 17,000 victims in the Ethereum blockchain alone. It is estimated that in total about 10% of the money invested in Ethereum’s ICO has ended up in the hands of criminals.

    Despite a relatively short period that elapsed since the development of the blockchain or Distributed Ledger technology (DLT), it has been put to multiple uses by multinational corporations, central banks, governments and individuals. It has been responsible for the emergence of digital money and revolutionary changes in a wide array of financial services. The paper examines opportunities and threats associated with the use of the DLT, with a special emphasis on the first experimental digital money, applying a heuristic SWOT analysis. It includes the analysis of properties of the Bitcoin in comparison to traditional money together with detailed examination of protocols that created it in terms of associated dangers.

    Мета роботи – проаналізувати сучасні тенденції та стан міжнародного ринку провідних криптовалют та оцінити можливі перспективи їх подальшого розвитку та інтеграції в світову фінансову систему. Результати дослідження. Ретроспективно простежено історію походження та становлення Біткоіна (Bitcoin), розглянуто деякі особливості «Блокчейн» («Blockchain»). Проаналізовано позитивні та негативні сторони роботи з криптовалютами. Розглянуто найближчу за капіталізацією до Біткоіна криптовалюту Ефір (Ethereum) і проаналізовано основні відмінності між ними. На основі проведеного дослідження сформовано прогноз про найбільш вірогідний напрям розвитку ринку криптовалют на найближчу перспективу і про можливість їх інтеграції у світову фінансову систему. Теоретичне значення дослідження. Це дослідження і його результати будуть сприяти вирішенню глобальної наукової задачі – формуванню науково-обгрунтованого погляду академічної науки до нового феномену в економіці - криптовалют і їх ролі у світовій фінансовій системі. Оригінальність/цінність/наукова новизна дослідження. Ця робота є однією з небагатьох, що присвячені новому явищу в економіці – криптовалютам; представлено авторські прогнози про можливі напрямки подальшого розвитку ринку криптовалют. Перспективи подальших досліджень. Ця робота відкриває можливість подальших досліджень в області ринку криптовалют, його подальшого розвитку та інтеграції у світову фінансову систему. Тип статті – емпірична.
    Purpose – to analyze the current trends and the state of the international market of leading cryptocurrencies and to evaluate the possible prospects for their further development and integration into the world financial system. Findings. The authors traced the history of the origin and formation of Bitcoin retrospectively, considered some features of the "Blokchain". The paper analyzed the positive and negative aspects of working with cryptocurrencies. The research considered the closest on capitalization to Bitcoin – the Ethereum cryptocurrency and analyzed the main differences between them. On the basis of results of the study, the authors made the forecast about the most likely direction of the development of the cryptocurrency market for the near future and the possibility of their integration into the world financial system. Theoretical implications. The issues studied in the work and its results should contribute to the solution of the global scientific task – the formation of scientifically grounded opinion of academic science to a new phenomenon in the economy – the cryptocurrencies and their role in the world financial system. Originality/Value. This research work is one of the few which is dedicated to the new phenomenon in the economy – cryptocurrencies; author's forecasts about possible directions of further development of the crypto-currency market are presented. Research limitations/Future research. This paper opens the possibility of further research in the field of the crypto-currency market, its further development and integration into the world financial system. Paper type – empirical.
    Цель работы – проанализировать современные тенденции и состояние международного рынка ведущих криптовалют и оценить возможные перспективы их дальнейшего развития и интеграции в мировую финансовую систему. Результаты исследования. Ретроспективно прослежена история происхождения и становления Биткоина (Bitcoin), рассмотрены некоторые особенности «Блокчейн» («Blockchain»). Проанализированы положительные и отрицательные стороны работы с криптовалютами. Рассмотрена ближайшая по капитализации к Биткоину криптовалюта Эфир (Ethereum) и проанализированы основные различия между ними. На основе проведенного исследования сформирован прогноз о наиболее вероятном направлении развития рынка криптовалют на ближайшее будущее и о возможности их интеграции в мировую финансовую систему. Теоретическое значение исследования. Настоящее исследование и его результаты будут способствовать решению глобальной научной задачи – формированию научно-обоснованного мнения академической науки к новому феномену в экономике – криптовалютам и их роли в мировой финансовой системе. Оригинальность/ценность/научная новизна исследования. Работа является одной из немногих, посвященных новому явлению в экономике – криптовалютам; представлены авторские прогнозы о возможных направлениях дальнейшего развития рынка криптовалют. Перспективы дальнейших исследований. Настоящая работа открывает возможность дальнейших исследований в области рынка криптовалют, его дальнейшего развития и интеграции в мировую финансовую систему.
