Same seasonal changes in frequency of developmental stages were observed in the case of females T. gasterostei. The highest level of infection with ectoparasites was observed in spring and summer and was probably an effect of increase of the reproductive activity with increase of temperature. Infection with tapeworms was generally low and was a result of feeding activity and fish diet.

In the Baltic Proper, the mean circulation is too weak to explain the fast southward spreading of the so-called juvenile freshwater trapped by the seasonal thermocline in the summer season. Improved knowledge of the spatial and temporal scales of the velocity field is needed to better model dispersion. Spatial and temporal scales are investigated using some large historic data sets. Inertial oscillations are almost always present in the Baltic Proper, irrespective of wind conditions and mixed layer thicknesses. Analyses of the coherence in one data set reveal that the inertial oscillations have a horizontal coherence scale of 10–20 km under the conditions experienced during those measurements. Transient eddies and basin-scale modes with weaker periodicity are also indicated in our data sets. A tentative wavenumber spectrum is constructed for the Baltic Proper.

Opis:
This paper describes the seasonal and spatial variations of diffusive sediment– water ammonium fluxes in the western part of the Gulf of Gdańsk (southern Baltic). It assesses the potential environmental controls of these fluxes, such as the inflow of organic matter to bottom sediments and its quality, temperature-induced degradation of organic matter, and the redox potential of sediments. Ammonium fluxes, calculated using Fick’s first law, were always in the direction from the sediment into the water column and differed significantly with respect to sediment type. Fluxes were most intensive in sediments with the highest silt-clay fraction located in the deepest parts of the study area. The mean annual diffusive fluxes of ammonium from sediments to near-bottom water were estimated at 5.24 tonnes km−2 year−1 for silty-clays, 1.85 tonnes km−2 year−1 for silty-sands and 1.03 tonnes km−2 year−1 for sandy sediments. There was a high seasonal variation, with the greatest ammonium release in summer and early autumn, when the temperature of near-bottom water was the highest. On the basis of the calculated diffusive ammonium fluxes, we estimated that approximately 2700 tonnes of N–NH+4 are released annually from the surface sediments of the western part of the Gulf of Gdańsk, providing a minimum of 10% of the mineral nitrogen essential for primary production in surface waters. Our results are undoubtedly underestimated, as we disregarded advective ammonium fluxes, which in some areas of the Gulf of Gdańsk could well be comparable to diffusive fluxes.

Opis:
Sea Surface Temperature (SST) maps derived from NOAA weather satellites for the period 1990–2004 were used to investigate seasonal and inter-annual variations in the Baltic Sea. A comparison between monthly mean SST and in situ measurements at the MARNET station ‘Arkona Sea’ showed good agreement with differences in July and August. Monthly means reflect strong seasonal and interannual variations. The yearly means show a slight positive trend with an increase of 0.8 K in 15 years. In particular, summer and autumn months contribute to this positive trend, with stronger trends in the northern than in the southern Baltic. The winters are characterised by a slightly negative trend. The winter minimum SST in the Arkona Sea correlates best with the WIBIX climate index derived for the Baltic region.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of investigations concerning the number, distribution and physiological activity of sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB) inhabiting the bottom sediments of the Gulf of Gdańsk. The numbers of this group of bacteria range between 0.76 × 103 and 1.27 × 104 cells per g wet sediment. The bacterial sulphate reduction rate in bottom sediments of this area of the Baltic Sea varies from 1.89 to 31.6 nM SO2− 4 g−1 24 h−1. The numbers of SRB and their physiological activity were subject to considerable seasonal fluctuations, maximum values being noted in summer (June) and minima in spring (April). A direct relationship has been found between the number of SRB and hydrogen sulphide concentrations; there is, however, no such relationship with reference to sulphate concentrations. The numbers and distributions of SRB demonstrated considerable variation in a depth profile of bottom sediments. SRB inhabiting the bottom sediments of the Gulf of Gdańsk were able to use three different organic substrates (lactate, acetate, propionate) as electron donors and as carbon and energy sources.

Opis:
The paper analyses experimental measurements of laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) spectra in different seawaters. The fluorescence parameters, calculated from LIF spectra as the ratio of the integrals of fluorescence and Raman signal intensities, provide information about the relative changes in the concentrations of fluorescing molecules. Gathered during several cruises in 1994–2004 in the Baltic and Nordic Seas, all the data are presented as scatter plots of the fluorescence parameters of chlorophyll a (Chl a) and coloured dissolved organic matter (CDOM). Satisfactory correlations between these two parameters were found a) for open Nordic Seas waters, b) for the southern Baltic in blooming periods only, and c) for the Gulf of Gdańsk in non-blooming periods only.

Opis:
This paper discusses changes in the dissolved oxygen concentration (DOC) in the southern Baltic Sea. The oxygenation of the whole water column was estimated. Monthly mean DOCs, as well as a detailed description of the annual surface layer dissolved oxygen (DO) cycle, are presented. The DO cycle at the surface is characterized by two maxima in March/April and November, and by two minima in July/August and December. The DO decline time after the major Baltic inflow (MBI) in 2014 was estimated at about 10 months for the Bornholm Deep and Słupsk Furrow. Whereas the Bornholm Basin was relatively well oxygenated, low oxygen concentrations (<4 mg l−1) were measured in the deep layer of the Gdańsk Deep throughout the inflow period. In addition, the cod spermatozoa activation layer together with the neutral egg buoyancy layer for the Bornholm Basin and Słupsk Furrow are discussed on the basis of the measured DOCs and the variability in hydrographic conditions.

Opis:
This work presents numerical simulations of the time-dependent vertical distributions of phytoplankton, microzooplankton, Pseudocalanus elongatus, early juvenile herring (Clupea harengus) and two nutrient components (total inorganic nitrogen and phosphate) using the 1D-Coupled EcosystemMo del with a highresolution mesozooplankton (herbivorous copepods) module for P.elongatus and a simple prey-predator model for early juvenile herring C. harengus. This m odel was discussed in detail in Part 1. The calculations were done for one year (1999) for a station in the Gdańsk Deep (southern Baltic Sea). The results of the simulations were compared with the mean concentrations of nutrients, phytoplankton and zooplankton recorded in situ. The differences between the calculated and mean recorded values of nutrients and phytoplankton are c. 5–30% and depend on the month and depth for which the calculations were done. However, the calculated depth-integrated biomass of P. elongatus differs fromthe mean recorded value. This difference ranges from30 to 50% at the end of May. The 1DCEM model can be used to forecast ecological changes in the southern Baltic Sea.

The main aim of the paper is to present general information about hydro-meteorological conditions in the catchment of the Łebsko Lake. In the first part of the article a short description of the most important hydrographic elements of the investigated area (the Łebsko Lake, the Łeba River and its tributaries) was provided. The climatic analysis of local conditions, besides the characteristics of the air temperature and precipitation, contains the distribution of other principal meteorological elements (pressure, wind, cloud cover or relative humidity). The paper is a part of broader studies aimed at finding the key factors determining seasonal and annual changes of water relations in the catchment of the Łebsko Lake.
Opracowanie stanowi część projektu, którego celem jest analiza zmian stosunków wodnych w zlewni jeziora Łebsko. W artykule przedstawiono ogólną charakterystykę warunków klimatycznych i hydrograficznych zlewni jeziora Łebsko. Charakterystyka hydrologiczna obejmuje opis najważniejszych elementów sieci wodnej analizowanego obszaru: jeziora Łebsko wraz z zasilającymi je ciekami oraz rzeki Łeby jako głównego źródła zasilania jeziora. Opis warunków klimatycznych oprócz podstawowych charakterystyk termicznych i opadowych zawiera również analizę rozkładu wielu innych elementów meteorologicznych: wiatru, ciśnienia, zachmurzenia oraz wilgotności względnej. Bardziej szczegółowych pomiarów wymaga natomiast analiza bezpośrednich i pośrednich skutków hydrologicznych w czasie gwałtownych zmian wybranych elementów meteorologicznych (np. spiętrzenia wody przy silnych wiatrach z jednego kierunku). Wnikliwej analizie poddane zostały warunki pogodowe sprzyjające występowaniu skrajnie niskich i wysokich stanów wody w obrębie zlewni jeziora Łebsko.
