Sea Surface Temperature (SST) maps derived from NOAA weather satellites for the period 1990–2004 were used to investigate seasonal and inter-annual variations in the Baltic Sea. A comparison between monthly mean SST and in situ measurements at the MARNET station ‘Arkona Sea’ showed good agreement with differences in July and August. Monthly means reflect strong seasonal and interannual variations. The yearly means show a slight positive trend with an increase of 0.8 K in 15 years. In particular, summer and autumn months contribute to this positive trend, with stronger trends in the northern than in the southern Baltic. The winters are characterised by a slightly negative trend. The winter minimum SST in the Arkona Sea correlates best with the WIBIX climate index derived for the Baltic region.

The aim of the paper was to confirm the proposition that the classical SST algorithms MCSST and NLSST originally prepared for AVHRR data could also be used for Meteosat/SEVIRI data with satisfactory accuracy in the mid-latitude region, where the spatial resolution is about 7×7 km. The research was performed in the southern Baltic Sea (between 13◦E 53◦N and 21◦E 58◦N). Data were collected in all the seasons of 2007. The coefficients were found by means of regression analysis. SSTs determined on the basis of AVHRR data were used in the regression analysis instead of in situ data. A set of paired AVHRR and SEVIRI images spaced no more than 8 minutes apart were compared. The results show that the method is capable of producing sea surface temperatures with a statistical error (standard deviation) of 1◦C.

Coastal upwelling often reveals itself during the thermal stratification season as an abrupt sea surface temperature (SST) drop. Its intensity depends not only on the magnitude of an upwelling-favourable wind impulse but also on the temperature stratification of the water column during the initial stage of the event. When a ‘chain’ of upwelling events is taking place, one event may play a part in forming the initial stratification for the next one; consequently, SST may drop significantly even with a reduced wind impulse. Two upwelling events were simulated on the Polish coast in August 1996 using a three-dimensional, baroclinic prognostic model. The model results proved to be in good agreement with in situ observations and satellite data. Comparison of the simulated upwelling events show that the first one required a wind impulse of 28 000 kg m−1 s−1 to reach its mature, full form, whereas an impulse of only 7500 kg m−1 s−1 was sufficient to bring about a significant drop in SST at the end of the second event. In practical applications like operational modelling, the initial stratification conditions prior to an upwelling event should be described with care in order to be able to simulate the coming event with very good accuracy.

A statistical analysis of Baltic Sea upwelling has been carried out to cover, for the first time, the entire sea area for the period 1990–2009. Weekly composite SST maps based on NOAA/AVHRR satellite data were used to evaluate the location and frequency of upwelling. The results obtained were analysed and compared with earlier studies with excellent agreement. Our study enables the most intense upwelling areas in the entire Baltic Sea to be evaluated. According to the analysis of 443 SST maps, the most common upwelling regions are found off the Swedish south and east coasts (frequency 10–25%), the Swedish coast of the Bothnian Bay (16%), the southern tip of Gotland (up to 15%), and the Finnish coast of the Gulf of Finland (up to 15%). Pronounced upwelling also occurs off the Estonian coast and the Baltic east coast (up to 15%), the Polish coast and the west coast of Rugen (10–15%); otherwise the upwelling frequency was between 5 and 10%. Additionally, simulated SST distributions derived from a Baltic Sea numerical model were analysed for the same period. Furthermore, at specific positions close to the coastline, surface winds based on the SMHI meteorological data base were analysed for the same 20-year period. Wind components parallel to the coast were discriminated into favourable and unfavourable winds forcing upwelling. The obtained frequencies of upwelling-favourable winds fit very well the observed upwelling frequencies derived from satellite SST maps. A positive trend of upwelling frequencies along the Swedish east coast and the Finnish coast of the Gulf of Finland was calculated for the period 1990–2009.

On the basis of monthly averaged satellite data, this study examined how the annual cycle of the Baltic Sea surface temperature (SST) varied spatially and temporally during the period 1986–2005. We conclude that there are two main thermal seasons in the Baltic Sea separated only by short transitional periods – spring lasting about one month, and autumn lasting two months. Generally speaking, summer covers the part of the year from June to October with the highest monthly mean SST in August. Winter, with a minimum monthly mean SST in February in shallow waters or in March in deeper areas, lasts from December to April. As a result of climate changes over the Baltic Sea region, strong positive trends in SST occur in the summer months. In consequence, the period with extremely high sea surface water temperatures has become slightly longer in the central Baltic. In the last decade winter changes in SST display zero or even negative tendencies. The investigated period was characterized by an annual increase in mean temperatures of about 0.03–0.07◦C. However, the rates of monthly mean SST changes were sometimes more than three times as high.

W sezonie zimowym 2019-2020 wystąpiło historyczne minimum rocznej maksymalnej powierzchni zlodzonej Bałtyku (MIE) w całym 301.letnim okresie obserwacji (1720-2020). MIE osiągnęła w tym sezonie lodowym wartość zaledwie 37 tys. km2, przy średniej (1720-2019) równej 213 tys. km2 i (odchyleniu standardowym) równym 112,9 tys. km2. W pracy rozpatruje się zespół procesów, które doprowadziły do osiągnięcia przez MIE ekstremalnie niskiej wartości. Analizę przeprowadzono dla okresu ostatnich 70 lat (1951-2020). Główną przyczyną wystąpienia w sezonie zimowym 2019-2020 tak niskiej MIE jest zmiana reżimu cyrkulacji środkowotroposferycznej w latach 1987-1989, polegająca na przejściu epoki cyrkulacyjnej E w epokę cyrkulacyjną W. W ostatniej epoce cyrkulacyjnej frekwencja makro-typu W według klasyfikacji Wangengejma-Girsa wzrosła znacznie powyżej wartości średnich (ryc. 3). Ponieważ zmienność frekwencji makrotypów cyrkulacji środkowotroposferycznej steruje zmiennością wartości elementów klimatycznych, w tym temperaturą powietrza, usłonecznieniem, prędkością wiatru (tab. 1), zmiana frekwencji makrotypów doprowadziła do zmiany bilansu cieplnego Bałtyku. Po roku 1988 wzrosła akumulacja ciepła słonecznego w wodach Bałtyku w okresie letnim i zmniejszyły się strumienie ciepła jawnego i ciepła parowania z powierzchni Bałtyku w okresach zimowych. W efekcie tych zmian temperatura powierzchni morza (SST) systematycznie wzrastała i SST na coraz większych powierzchniach morza nie osiągała w okresach zimowych temperatury krzepnięcia. W przebiegu SST pojawił się trend dodatni i tym samym wystąpił ujemny trend w przebiegu MIE. Spowodowało to zmianę reżimu lodowego Bałtyku, w ostatniej epoce cyrkulacyjnej silnie zmniejszyła się średnia wartość MIE i znacznie wzrosła częstość występowania łagodnych sezonów lodowych, w tym sezonów ekstremalnie łagodnych (MIE < 81.0 tys. km2). Wystąpienie w okresie ostatniej zimy (DJFM; 2019-2020) bardzo silnej cyrkulacji strefowej (ryc. 6), będącej skutkiem dominacji frekwencji makrotypu W (tab. 3) doprowadziło do wystąpienia bardzo silnych anomalii temperatury powietrza i anomalii SST (ryc. 7), uniemożliwiających, poza skrajnymi północnymi akwenami Bałtyku (Zatoka Botnicka), rozwój zlodzenia. Wystąpienie historycznego minimum MIE w sezonie lodowym 2019-2020 stanowi wynik ewolucji pola SST Bałtyku, zacho-zącej pod wpływem zmiany charakteru cyrkulacji atmosferycznej po roku 1988.
In the winter season 2019-2020, there was a historical minimum of the annual maximum ice extent (MIE) of the Baltic Sea within the entire 301-year observation period (1720-2020). In this ice season MIE reached a value of only 37,000 km2, with an average (1720-2019) of 213,000 km2 and (standard deviation) of 112,900 km2. The paper considers the set of pro-cesses that led to the MIE reaching an extremely low value. The analysis was carried out for the last 70 years (1951-2020). The main reason for the occurrence of such a low MIE in the winter season 2019-2020 is the change in the mid-tropospheric circulation regime in the years 1987-1989, consisting in the transition of the E circulation epoch into the W circulation epoch. In the last period of circula-tion epoch the frequency of the W macrotype according to the Wangengejm-Girs classifica-tion increased significantly above the mean values (Fig. 3). As the variability of the frequency of the macrotypes of the mid-tropospheric circulation controls the variability of the values of climatic elements, including air temperature, sunshine duration, wind speed (Table 1), the change in the frequency of macrotypes led to a change in the thermal balance of the Baltic Sea. After 1988 the accumulation of solar heat in the waters of the Baltic Sea in the Summer period increased, and the fluxes of sensible heat and the heat of evaporation from the surface of the Baltic Sea in Winter periods decreased. As a result of these changes the sea surface temperature (SST) was systematically increasing, and the SST on increasingly larger sea sur-faces did not reach the freezing point in Winter. There was a positive trend in the course of SST and thus a negative trend in the course of MIE. This caused a change in the ice regime of the Baltic Sea. In the last circulation epoch the mean value of MIE decreased significantly and the frequency of mild ice seasons increased significantly, including extremely mild seasons (MIE <81,000 km2). The occurrence of a very strong zonal circulation during the last winter (DJFM; 2019-2020) (Fig. 6), resulting from the dominance of the W macrotype frequency (Table 3), led to a very strong air temperature anomalies and to the SST anomalies (Fig. 7), preventing, apart from the extremely northern waters of the Baltic Sea (Gulf of Bothnia), the development of the ice cover. The occurrence of the historical MIE minimum in the 2019-2020 ice season is the result of the evolution of the Baltic SST field, which took place as a result of the change in the nature of the atmospheric circulation after 1988.

The spatio-temporal variability of chlorophyl a (Chl a) caused by a sequence of upwelling events in the Gulf of Finland in July–August 2006 was studied using remote sensing data and field measurements. Spatial distributions of sea surface temperature (SST) and Chl a concentration were examined using MODIS and MERIS data respectively. The MERIS data were processed with an algorithm developed by the Free University of Berlin (FUB) for case 2 waters. Evaluation of MERIS Chl a versus in situ Chl a showed good correlation (r2 = 0.67), but the concentration was underestimated. The linear regression for a 2 h window was applied to calibrate MERIS Chl a. The spatio-temporal variability exhibited the clear influence of upwelling events and related filaments on Chl a distribution in the western and central Gulf. The lowest Chl a concentrations were recorded in the upwelled water, especially at the upwelling centres, and the highest concentrations (13 mg m−3) were observed about two weeks after the upwelling peak along the northern coast. The areas along the northern coast of upwelled water (4879 km2) on the SST map, and increased Chl a (5526 km2) two weeks later, were roughly coincident. The effect of upwelling events was weak in the eastern part of the Gulf, where Chl a concentration was relatively consistent throughout this period.

The first part of the Baltic Sea ecohydrodynamic model, based on the Princeton Ocean Model (POM), was validated by long-term observations of sea level, salinity and water temperature fluctuations. The modelled sea surface temperature (SST) fields were also compared to satellite images – satisfactory correlation coefficients were obtained. The model bias and efficiency coefficients of the modelled variables in relation to the observed values were determined. The quality of model simulations in relation to measured values was estimated with respect to spatial and seasonal variability in shallow and deep coastal waters as well as in the open sea. The results indicated the high quality of simulations by the hydrodynamic model.
