Opis:
The ProDeMo (Production and Destruction of Organic Matter Model), a 3D coupled hydrodynamic-ecological model, was formulated and applied to the whole Baltic Sea and the subregion of the Gulf of Gdańsk. It describes nutrient cycles (phosphorus, nitrogen, silicon) through the food web with 15 state variables, oxygen conditions and the parameterisation of water-sediment interactions. The present version of the model takes two groups of phytoplankton – diatoms and non-diatoms – as well as zooplankton into consideration. It covers the flow of matter and energy in the sea, including river discharges and atmospheric deposition. Numerical applications are embedded on a 1 NMgri d for the Gulf of Gdańsk and a 5 NMgri d for the Baltic Sea. Since the model results largely concur with observations, the model can be regarded as a reliable tool for analysing the behaviour of the Baltic ecosystem. Some examples of the spatial-temporal variability of the most important biological and chemical parameters are presented. The model results are compared with those of other modelling research in the Baltic Sea. Both the ProDeMo model algorithm and its computing procedures need to be further developed. The next version should therefore enable more phytoplankton groups to be defined, for example cyanobacteria, which are able to take up molecular nitrogen from the atmosphere (nitrogen fixation). Additionally, the sediment phase should be divided into active and non-active layers.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to verify whether the biogeochemical features (e.g. concentration of nutrients, oxygen consumption, mineralization rate, Eh) of sediments changed by the zebra mussel or its shell deposits differ from those in the ambient soft bottom, and how these differences are related to the structure of benthic macroinvertebrates. In 2006 three sampling sessions were carried out in the Curonian Lagoon, SE Baltic Sea, at three pre-defined sites, corresponding to different bottom types: zebra mussel bed, zebra mussel shell deposits and bare soft sediments. Similarity analysis of biogeochemical parameters indicated that bottom sediments covered with zebra mussel shell deposits were rather distinct from the other bottom types because of the lowest total organic matter mineralization rate and highest organic carbon, total phosphorus and total nitrogen content. The parameters measured in the zebra mussel bed did not deviate conspicuously from the values observed in bare bottoms, except for the higher rate of oxygen consumption in the upper sediment layer. Unsuitable anoxic conditions on the one hand and the ‘attractive’ shelters provided by zebra mussels on the other hand may promote the epifaunal life style in the habitats formed by dense zebra mussel clumps.

Opis:
This work presents a one-dimensional simulation of the seasonal changes in CO2 partial pressure (pCO2). The results of the model were constrained using data from observations, which improved the model’s ability to estimate nitrogen fixation in the central Baltic Sea and allowed the impact of nitrogen fixation on the ecological state of the Baltic Sea to be studied. The model used here is the public domain water-column model GOTM (General Ocean Turbulence Model), which in this study was coupled with a modifed Baltic Sea ecosystem model, ERGOM (The Baltic Sea Research Institute’s ecosystem model). To estimate nitrogen fixation rates in the Gotland Sea, the ERGOM model was modified by including an additional cyanobacteria group able to fix nitrogen from March to June. Furthermore, the model was extended by a simple CO2 cycle. Variable C:P and N:P ratios, controlled by phosphate concentrations in ambient water, were used to represent cyanobacteria, detritus and sediment detritus. This approach improved the model’s ability to reproduce sea-surface phosphate and pCO2 dynamics. The resulting nitrogen fixation rates in 2005 for the two simulations, with and without the additional cyanobacteria group, were 259 and 278 mmol N m−2 year−1 respectively.
