Opis:
Background. Macoma balthica is the major zoobenthic species in the Gulf of Gdańsk. Material. Two (4.2%) of the 48 M. balthica specimens collected in 2002 from the depth of 40 m were found to harbour metacercariae−containing sporocysts of Parvatrema affinis (Jameson et Nicoll, 1913) James, 1964. Results. The paper reports morphoanatomical dimensions of 30 sporocysts and metacercariae. Due to the common occurrence of the intermediate (Macoma balthica) and definitive (anseriform and charadriiform birds) hosts of P. affinis in the Gulf of Gdańsk, the trematodes are regarded as a constant component of the local biocoenose.

Opis:
The main 137Cs accumulation zone in the study area was found to be located at depths below the 50-metre isobath, i.e. below the layer of hydrodynamic activity. In coastal waters not influenced by the fresh water discharge from the Curonian Lagoon, 137Cs occurs mostly in soluble form. The particulate 137Cs activity concentration in the marine area affected by Curonian Lagoon water can make up 10% of the total 137Cs activity concentration. The circulation model was developed to assess the distribution of artificial radionuclides in Lithuanian territorial waters. The model was validated on the basis of data acquired during the measurement campaign in the Lithuanian part of the Baltic Sea and the Curonian Lagoon in the years 1999–2001. The model enables the 137Cs activity concentration to be simulated as a passive admixture (error within c. 15%).

Opis:
Mono- and dimethylphenanthrenes were determined in recent (0–10 cm) sediments collected at about 30 stations in the southern Baltic Sea from 1995 to 2001. The stations were located in the Szczecin Lagoon, the Pomeranian Bay, the Bornholm Deep, the open sea (without the Bornholm and Gdańsk Deeps), the Gdańsk Deep, and the Gulf of Gdańsk including the Wisła (Vistula) Lagoon. The results were related to the unsubstituted PAH content. The annual load of methylphenanthrenes in relation to unsubstituted PAHs in the Rivers Odra and Wisła was estimated. Methylphenanthrenes are more abundant in the Odra estuary than in the Wisła estuary, and more abundant in the coastal sediments than in the open sea sediments. The results indicate that methylphenanthrenes related to the lower molecular, unsubstituted PAHs are a good measure of petrogenic pollution in the southern Baltic.

Opis:
Sediments in ports usually contain very high concentrations of tributyltin (TBT), heavy metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and other contaminants. The stabilization/solidification technology would reduce the environmental impact and it may also prove to be cost-effective and sustainable. The Port of Gdynia in Poland serves as a case study to present some of the aspects of the dredged sediments stabilization. By using an echo sounder and digital side sonar the hydrographical measurements were made. On the basis of the analysis of seismic-acoustic records were set the sediment sampling points. 58 sediment samples were collected by using vibro corer and laboratorial analysis was performed on concentrations of trace metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), chloro-organic pesticides, tributyltin (TBT) and mineral oil index in accordance with accredited methods. Determined concentrations of analysed parameters indicated heavy pollution in basin VI (close to Hungarian quay) in the Port of Gdynia. The determined content of TBT ranged from 0.89 to 4.40 mg Sn kg-1 d.w, Ʃ 7 PAHs 0.677-9.0 mg kg-1, Ʃ 16PAHs 2.604-14.66 mg kg-1 and Ʃ7 PCBs 0.479-3.693 mg kg-1. The stated concentration of Pb (299 mg kg-1) exceeded the limit value set by Polish law. The content of mineral oil index ranged from 251 to 2904 mg.kg-1. Leaching tests were performed for both the stabilized and unstabilized samples. The results of primary laboratory stabilization tests, the leaching tests and uniaxial compressive strength confirmed that the stabilization/solidification technology can be applied to managing of contaminated dredging sediment. The material obtained as a result of the stabilization process can be used for the construction of quays, roads or car parks.
Osady portowe zazwyczaj zawierają bardzo wysokie stężenia tributylocyny (TBT), metali ciężkich, wielopierścieniowych węglowodorów aromatycznych (WWA) i innych zanieczyszczeń. Technologia stabilizacji zanieczyszczonych osadów może pomóc zredukować negatywny wpływ jaki wywierają one na środowisko. Badania nad zastosowaniem technologii stabilizacji urobku czerpalnego przeprowadzono w Porcie Gdynia.

Opis:
The occurrence of algae on the Sopot beach was investigated from 2004 to 2006 from the beach management point of view. Various methods were applied in an attempt to understand the mechanisms underlying the accumulation of algae on the shoreline. They included daily observations of the occurrence of macrophyta on the beach, absorption measurements of acetone extracts of the particulate matter in the seawater, the collection of macrophyta and phytoplankton samples for biomass and taxonomic identification, and determination of the degree of decomposition on the basis of chloropigment analyses. The results were related to the environmental conditions: meteorological data and the physicochemical parameters of the seawater. The biomass recorded on the beach consisted mainly of macroalgae and a small proportion of sea grass (Zostera marina). The phytoplankton biomass consisted mainly of dinoflagellates, diatoms, cyanobacteria, euglenoids and cryptophytes. The conclusions to be drawn from this work are that the occurrence of huge amounts of macrophyta amassing on the Sopot beach depends on the combined effect of high solar radiation in spring and summer, high-strength (velocity × frequency) south-westerly winds in May-September, followed by northerly winds, bringing the macrophyta from Puck Bay on to the Sopot beach. At the same time, their abundance along the beach varies according to the shape and height of the shore, the wind strength and the local wind-driven seawater currents. According to estimates, from 2.2–4.4 × 102 tons (dry weight) of macrophyta can be moved on to the Sopot beach in one hour. In October, strong southeasterly winds can also transport huge amounts of decomposing biomass onshore. The phytoplankton content in the total biomass is negligible, even though at low concentrations its biological activity may be considerable. The intensive phytoplankton blooms observed on the Sopot beach in summer are not always caused by cyanobacteria.

Opis:
The Vistula Lagoon is situated along the south-eastern shore of the Gulf of Gdańsk and is linked with the gulf through the Strait of Baltiysk. Separated from the open sea by the Vistula Spit, the Vistula Lagoon is a shallow body of water with a mean depth of 3 m; the bottom is covered with a layer of mud several metres thick. This article presents a unique, newly discovered locality of tree stumps occurring in situ at the bottom of the Vistula Lagoon. The radiocarbon age of the alder stumps and the top of the peat in which they are rooted is Subboreal. The alder wood was dated to 4770±35 and 3295±35 years BP. The top layers of peat were dated to 4670±40, 4410±35 and 3690±35 years BP. The considerable scatter of the dates indicates the significance of erosional processes during marine transgressions. Radiocarbon dates and pollen analyses indicate that in the late Atlantic – early Subboreal periods, the water level of the Vistula Lagoon was about 3 m lower than it is today. The −2 m level was passed no earlier than c. 3500 years ago; the −1 m level was reached around 2000 years ago.

The aim of this work was to explore the possibilities of utilising the macroalgae accumulating on the Sopot beach, a part of the Gulf of Gdańsk (Baltic Sea). During this work (2004–2006) a range of activities were undertaken: monitoring the occurrence of macroalgae, collection of plant material, taxonomic identification, laboratory analyses of contamination (metals – Cd, Pb, Ni, Zn, Cu, Cr, Hg; radionuclides – 137Cs, 40K; organic contaminants – polychlorinated biphenyls, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons), the stage of algal degradation and studying possible uses of the plant material collected on the beach. The most suitable way of utilising the plant material seems to be as a biofertiliser. Laboratory growth tests were carried out to assess this possible use; they were successful.

Opis:
In order to assess their short-term variability, nutrient concentrations were measured at standard depths at 2 h intervals in the deepest region of the Gdańsk Deep during the first ten days of June 2001. The mean concentrations of nutrients in the euphotic zone were: NN (NO2 −, NO3 −, NH4 +) – 1.93 μmol dm−3, PO4 3− – 0.12 μmol dm−3 and Fetot – 0.11 μmol dm−3. During daylight hours, when the rate of assimilation was fastest, concentrations of nitrogen, phosphorus and iron compounds were very low. The phosphate concentration fell to a minimum (0.03 μmol dm−3) between 04:00 and 10:00 hrs, while total iron dropped to 0.01 μmol dm−3 between 10:00 and 16:00 hrs. Both levels were below the limiting values for phosphorus and iron. At night, concentrations of NO3 − and PO4 3− rose by 25%, those of NH4 + and Fetot by 35%. The mean molar ratios of NN:PO4 3− and Fetot:PO4 3− in the surface layer were subject to significant daily fluctuations. The molar NN:PO4 3− ratio was higher than the optimum value established for the Baltic Sea. Below the halocline, the concentrations of dissolved iron and phosphorus rose as a result of diffusion from sediments in response to changing redox conditions.

This paper summarises current knowledge of goods and services in the Polish Exclusive Economic Zone of the Baltic Sea ecosystem. It reviews specific properties of the Baltic that could be used for economic valuation. Goods and services range from the familiar resources of fish and minerals, which were valued with the Productivity Method, to less obvious services provided by the ecosystem such as biofiltration in coastal sands, valued with either the Replacement Cost or Damage Cost Avoided methods. Disservices to the marine ecosystem are also considered, e.g. erosion and coastal flooding, including the costs of planned mitigating measures. This paper emphasises the importance of using valuation methods to help make better-educated decisions for the sustainability of the Baltic Sea.
