Opis:: This article aims to various interpretations of The Apocalypse of St. John in 20th century music. Because of its comprehensive use of symbols and mystery, The Apocalypse was often an inspiration for painters, poets, and composers. Particularly, worth analysing are symbols and visions used in selected compositions, such as The Quartet for the End of Time by Olivier Messiaen, Black Angels by George Crumb, Apokalipsis and Septem Tubae by Bernadetta Matuszczak, Symphony ‘1999’ by Aleksander Lasoń. Seven trumpets, seven horns, God’s anger, angels, destruction, God’s omnipotence, the victory of good over evil, and hope—those are the most common symbols used in these compositions. Transcendental and mysterious meaning is reflected by composers in various ways (from timbre and instrumentation, rhythmic diminution and tempo that shows eternity, to quotations and characters from The Apocalypse). Music written by different authors gives us a broad perspective on how the topic of Apocalypse was adapted in music.

Opis:: Nowadays people are more and more concerned about the future and the end of the world. The vision of the End of Times in Joachim of Fiore’s apocalyptic conception presents one of the most interesting interpretations of the end of the world in relation to events and historical figures and presents an attempt to look into the future made by the 12th-century Calabyan Abbot Joachim of Fiore on the basis of the book of the Holy Bible, especially the Apocalypse of Saint John. The purpos of the thesis is to introduce the reader to the very form of the medieval exeget – Joachim of Fiore as well as the concept of tripartite and interpretation of history in the Trinitarian context created by him. In the light of the concept mentioned above, the vision of the Calabyan Abbot was presented regarding the end of times, preceded by an explanation of exegetical methods used by the abbot (especially biblical typology and the principle of compatibility of both Testaments in relation to the entire history of the Chosen People and Christianity). The thesis also presents a comparison of the convergent historiosophic concepts of Joachim of Fiore and Saint Augustine of Hippo. The thesis contains both Latin fragments of Joachim’s manuscripts and translations of them into Polish. Annex show translated testament of Joachim of Fiore, proving his faithfulness to the authority of the Catholic Church.

Opis:: Temat świadectwa jest jednym w ważnych motywów teologicznych ostatniej księgi Nowego Testamentu, jaką stanowi Apokalipsa Janowa. Rzeczownik „świadectwo” występuje w niej dziewięć razy (1,2.9; 6,9; 11,7; 12,11.17; 19,10bis; 20,4), zawsze w liczbie pojedynczej. Trzykrotnie rzeczownikowi „świadectwo” towarzyszy czasownik „mieć”, z którym tworzy syntagmę „mieć świadectwo” (6,9; 12,17; 19,10). Zdaniem niektórych komentatorów wskazuje ona na „głębszą tożsamość uczniów” Jezusa. W niniejszym artykule proponuję analizę powyższego sformułowania, szukając odpowiedzi na pytanie o istotę owej pogłębionej tożsamość wyznawców Jezusa, którą wyraża omawiany związek wyrazowy. Rozpoczynam od kilku uwag na temat etymologii rzeczownika „świadectwo” pojmowanego jako pamięć o osobach i wydarzeniach. Następnie analizuję trzy fragmenty, w których występuje syntagma „mieć świadectwo”, aby w ostatnim punkcie rozważań szukać odpowiedzi na pytanie o sens tego wyrażenia w kontekście rozumienia tożsamości wyznawców Jezusa. Żywa pamięć o Jezusie, przechowywana, przeżywana i przekazywana, kształtuje tożsamość wyznawców Chrystusa, która powraca do przeszłości, ale jest jednocześnie otwarta na teraźniejszość oraz z nadzieją pozwala oczekiwać przyszłości. W ten sposób wyznawcy Jezusa stają się świadkami i prorokami Jezusa wobec współczesnego świata.
The theme of testimony is one of the most important theological motifs in the final book of the New Testament, the Apocalypse of John. The noun “testimony” appears there nine times (1:2-9; 6:9; 11:7; 12:11-17; 19:10[x2]; 20:4), always in the singular form. The noun “testimony” is accompanied three times by the verb “have”, with which it creates the syntagma “have the testimony” (6:9; 12:17; 19:10). This syntagma, according to some analysts, indicates “a deeper identity of the disciples” of Jesus. In the present article I suggest an analysis of the above-mentioned phrase, seeking to identify the essence of that deeper identity of Jesus’ followers, which is expressed by the analyzed constituent segment. I begin with a few remarks about the etymology of the noun “testimony”, understood as the memory of people and events. Next, I analyze the three fragments which feature the syntagma “have the testimony”. From that background, I finally seek to answer the question of the sense of such an expression within the context of understanding the identity of Jesus’ followers. The living memory of Jesus – kept, experienced and passed along – shapes the identity of Christ’s followers. It looks back to the past, but at the same time is open to the present and, through hope, allows believers to await the future. In this way Jesus’ followers become witnesses and prophets of Jesus in the modern world.

Opis:: The term “earthquake” appears in the Book of Revelation seven times. The number “seven” has great significance in the Bible. However, the sevenfold occurrence of the concept of “earthquake” in the Book of Revelation is a result of the use of John’s patterns, which reveal Mary’s dignity as “the Mother of the Lord.” Furthermore, the magnitude of these earthquakes corresponds to the Greek expression ἡ μήτηρ τοῦ κυρίου μου (Luke 1:43). Thus apocalyptic earthquakes are evidently linked to the Mother of the Lord.
Pojęcie „trzęsienie ziemi” pojawia się w Apokalipsie siedem razy. Liczba siedem ma głębokie znaczenie w Biblii. Jednak siedmiokrotne występowanie pojęcia „trzęsienie ziemi” w Księdze Objawienia jest wynikiem użycia wzorów Janowych, które ujawniają godność Maryi jako „Matki Pana”. Ponadto, wielkość tych trzęsień ziemi odpowiada greckiemu wyrażeniu ἡ μήτηρ τοῦ κυρίου μου (Łk 1, 43). Apokaliptyczne trzęsienia ziemi są więc wyraźnie powiązane z Matką Pana.

Opis:: Autor niniejszego artykułu proponuje refleksję nad tajemnicą Bożej miłości, objawionej i urzeczywistnionej w Jezusie Chrystusie, która bezpośrednio odnosi się do wspólnoty Kościoła. Analizowane teksty zostały zaczerpnięte z ostatniej księgi Nowego Testamentu, jaką jest Apokalipsa św. Jana, określana niekiedy jako synteza całego Pisma Świętego. Będąc księgą napisaną w Kościele i dla Kościoła, opisuje wspólnotę w jej różnorodnych wymiarach. Jednym z istotnych rysów eklezjologii Apokalipsy jest przekonanie, że Kościół to wspólnota zrodzona z miłości Jezusa, podtrzymywana, umacniana i prowadzoną ciągle tą samą Chrystusową miłością. Wskazują na to przede wszystkim te teksty Apokalipsy, które wprost mówią o miłości Jezusa do Kościoła, a ideę te wyrażają przy pomocy dwóch charakterystycznych czasowników tradycji Janowej, jakim są agapao i fileo.
I propose in the present article a reflection upon the mystery of God’s love, revealed and materialized in Jesus Christ, which directly relates to the community of the Church. The analyzed texts have been taken from the last book of the New Testament. One of the essential features of ecclesiology in the Apocalypse is a conviction that the Church is a community begotten from Jesus’ love, invariably upheld, enhanced and led through Christ’s love. I have chosen texts from the Apoca-lypse which explicitly refer to Jesus’ love to the Church and express this idea by means of two characteristic verbs of John’s tradition, namely agapao and fileo. Although the said verbs are not often employed in the Apocalypse (four times: 1:5; 3:9; 12:11; 20:9 and two times: 3:19; 22:15 respectively), they are, however, mostly used in passages which describe a relationship between Christ and the community of the Church (1:5; 3:9-19; 20:9). During the liturgy, the Church worships Jesus, whose love is the foundation for everything (1:5): it is expressed through deliverance from sin, a sacrifice of one’s own life and man’s participation in Christ’s victory and reign. The Church is obliged to show the world a clear testimony to love (3:9). It is being incessantly admon-ished and brought up by Christ, called up to renew zeal and conversion (3:19). As “the camp of the saints and beloved city” (20:9), the Church actively participates in the battle against evil and, sup-ported by the loving God and Lamb, it lives on assured of Christ’s ultimate victory.
