Kongo kings and contacts with Portugal - Opis:
- Political relations between Portuguese and Kongo were very difficult especially after 1575 when Portuguese colony in Luanda had been founded. Portugal was important commercial Partner for the kings of Kongo. Traders from Luanda often visited Kongo and many of them settled there. But on the other hand politics of some Portuguese governors from Luanda was serious threat for Kongo's territorial integrity at the beginning of 17th century. Many traders and Catholic priests were against military expeditions and slave raids directed into Kongo, especially because Portuguese forces were supported by heathen bands of Imbangala and Kongo was perceived as Catholic Kingdom. Military expeditions were also cause of blocking trade routes. Kongo was able to defeat Portuguese forces in 1622 during the reign of Pedro. But Luanda was perceived as serious threat and Pedro II sought European ally against Portuguese pressure. He planned to expel Portuguese from Luanda with help of Dutch but he unfortunately died before Dutch expedition arrived there in 1624.
