Opis:
Power electronic three-level AC-DC converters connecting a utility grid with DC supplies are widely used in renewable energy sources. For such distributed systems, the quality of energy is very important. Hence, control algorithms of an AC-DC converter have to provide not only a sinusoidal shape of grid current, but also stable operation during transient states in the grid, e.g. voltage dips or voltage unbalance. This paper deals with the problem of robustness of AC-DC control methods under disturbed grid voltage. Three modern predictive control algorithms are presented and investigated under grid voltage distortions. Experimental results from a laboratory test setup illustrating properties of the described methods are shown.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of the experimental work that was carried out for the model non-insulated AC / DC low power converters. They are used to supply the components of the electrical installation, controls, automation systems in building (sensors of lights, smoke, etc.), remote control systems, time programmers, consumer appliances and lighting components etc. The manufacturers offer now the integrated drivers for the construction of non-isolated converters with power up to several watts. As part of the experimental work the factors which have an influence on the level and nature of conducted disturbances propagation were examined. The example of a model converter shows how the disturbances are generated and propagated in circuit of non-isolated power supply and how the degree and nature of its load affects the level of generated conducted disturbances. It shows how the load condition of the power supply influenced on the level of generated conducted disturbances. Finally, the VIPer16L power supply application has been used in the application of the engine speed regulator for household appliances.

Opis:
The birth of electricity witnessed “the battle of currents” between AC and DC as a medium of power transfer. AC won the battle in the first place because of its ability to transform voltage levels. However, with the development of power electronic converters (PECs), DC is striking back. Most of the electronic loads in our conventional AC-based homes are DC by nature. Moreover, the modern concept of energy-efficient variable speed drive (VSD) based loads, i.e. DC-inverter based air-conditioners and refrigerators, require a DC link for their operation. The driving component of all such loads is the PEC. The operational efficiency of PECs depends on the loading which varies throughout the day. This paper presents a mathematical model based on a bottom-up approach to the comparative efficiency analysis of AC and DC distribution systems considering daily load variation. Two topologies are presented where AC and DC distribution systems are compared in terms of efficiency. The first topology (T1) defines a separate/independent converter for each load, whereas in the second topology (T2) loads of a particular class are lumped and driven by a single converter. The results present DC distribution better than AC distribution with an efficiency advantage of 2.28% and 1.57% for T1 and T2, respectively.

Opis:
The paper presents a control method for the three-phase power converter operating under unbalanced grid voltage conditions. The method uses a new transformation to the non-Cartesian frame, which makes the controlled current vector components balanced in this frame even if originally the three-phase current is referenced as unbalanced. Furthermore, Park’s transformation makes the controlled variables constant, which allows to apply proportional–integral terms as current controllers independent of the required control target. Several control targets known from literature have been analyzed with regard to the required new transformation parameters, and the transformation parameters for all targets have been found. Simulation results are shown to prove the theoretical analysis, and the experimental test results are presented as practical validation of the proposed use of the non-Cartesian frame in control.

Opis:
One of the currently investigated problems in power electronics-based electrical energy conversion is proper operation of electronic converters during grid voltage imbalance and harmonics. In classic control methods, it introduces oscillations of variables, resulting in the necessity to improve control systems with signals filtration and usually by application of resonant terms as part of current controllers. The paper presents a new approach to grid-connected inverter control based on transformation to a non-Cartesian frame, the parameters of which are correlated with grid voltage asymmetry. The proposed method results in resignation from resonant terms used as controllers and their replacement with proportional–integral terms for which anti-wind-up structures are significantly simpler than for oscillatory terms. The paper presents new transformation principles, features and some simulation results showing the waveforms of signals transformed to the new non-Cartesian frame.

Opis:
Power electronics is one of the most important elements of today’s industry. Many of converters applications are being considered as critical for plant production process. Offering enhanced functionality in modern AC drives is a way to gain a competitive advantage in power converters market. One of the values to the customers comes from low cost condition monitoring of critical equipment and from optimized maintenance costs. DC bus is one of the elements of power converters. Although the designers pay a lot of attention when designing DC-link circuit, breakdowns and failures of the DC circuit components can still happen. Unfortunately this means that the whole converter must be shut down in emergency mode to be repaired. Nowadays, monitoring of the bus capacitor is becoming one of the desired features from customer side, as well as from the converter manufacturer. Proposed approach presents a method which assures the online evaluation of the equivalent series resistance (ESR) of a DC-link capacitor. The ESR increase trend is an important indicator of accelerated aging process or incoming failure of the capacitor. The important feature of the proposed condition monitoring method is that it does not require any additional sensors. For estimation purposes already installed sensors and other internal converter’s signals are used. Particularly the method employs the DC-link voltage measurement with the DC-link current reconstruction.

The escalating prevalence of rooftop solar PVs and DC powered home appliances are the driving forces for the research in the field of DC distribution at residential level. The current research work presents comparative analyses of AC and DC distribution systems considering various scenarios for the specific purpose of efficiency/energy savings. A modern Bakersfield CA, USA home is considered for the analyses. The loads are classified according to the power demand. Rooftop solar PVs are also included in each residential building. Mathematical equations are devised for the efficiency analysis of residential buildings powered with AC as well as DC. The results reveal strong dependence of the efficiency values on the utilization/types of loads, efficiencies of the power electronic converters (PECs), solar capacity and seasonal conditions, as a function of the time of day. It is concluded that AC system presents better efficiency values as compared to the DC counterpart except during the time periods when solar power is available and when the penetration of variable speed drive (VSD) based loads is high.

Opis:
Single-stage energy converters, in particular, the Z-Source Inverter (ZSI) or impedance source inverter, has gained significant attention in the recent years. ZSI ensures flexible energy conversions (dc–dc, dc–ac, ac–ac and ac–dc) because of its unique ability to boost the output voltage in typical renewable energy systems. The impedance network integrated between the energy source and the load contributes to the unique functionality of the ZSI. As substantial research has been conducted on the ZSI, this article provides a review on the operation of ZSI. The article initially examines the various topologies commonly adopted for the application of the ZSI. Subsequently, details of the various modulation methods that are commonly used to obtain the voltage boosting using ZSI are documented. Additionally, the phenomenon of neutral point formation, which is an important impediment to the adoption of multilevel ZSIs and the limitation of the modulation methods, is explained.
