Opis:
Measurements of steady state and transient stimulation and quenching of photocurrent and luminescence were performed in ZnSe single crystals doped with Cu which exhibit marked change in the photoconductivity and luminescence when illuminated by infrared light simultaneously with shorter wavelength radiation. A model which might explain all IR induced phenomena on the basis of donor-acceptor pair recombination mechanism including releasing holes from deep center by IR light and energy redistribution between different recombination centers is presented.

Opis:
A brief overview is given on selected effects of the exchange coupling between effective mass electrons and localized spins in II-VI semiconductors containing Mn ions. In the case of a carrier or exciton trapped by an impurity or defect, the exchange interaction leads to zero-field spin-splitting. The current theory of such complexes, known as bound magnetic polarons, describes correctly their spectroscopic and thermodynamic properties as well as their formation dynamics. At the same time, a free magnetic polaron - a delocalized carrier accompanied by a traveling cloud of polarized spins - is not expected to exist for the actual values of the coupling constants. However, hole scattering by thermodynamic and static fluctuations is shown to affect significantly its energy. For a strong coupling, the corresponding renormalization has to be described by a non-perturbative approach. Finally, the influence of the carrier liquid upon the Mn spins is discussed. Here, either optical pumping or p-type doping may lead to a ferromagnetic order, both in bulk and layered structures. Because of a long-range character of the carrier mediated interactions, this ordering is not destroyed by the fluctuations, even in the reduced dimensionality systems.

Photoluminescence measurements on CdTe/ZeTe self-assembled quantum dot samples with different cap thickness values (18-110nm) were performed at 1.8 K at varying excitation levels. The shape of macrophotoluminescence spectra did not altered notably with the excitation power. The spectra exhibited interference fringes related to the total barrier thickness. Simulation of the fringes confirmed the barrier thickness determined during the growth. The minimal amplitude of the fringes was observed for the cap thickness corresponding approximately to a quarter of the emission wavelength in the barrier material. Maximum emission intensity occurred for the largest thickness of the cap, i.e., 110 nm. We attribute this result to the influence of the surface recombination centers.

A brief review is given of optical experiments related to creation and recombination of charged excitons. Their results are analyzed in terms of a simple three-particle free trion model. It is shown that the simple model explains well such results as temperature variation of lifetime and absorption intensity or photoluminescence line shape and a decrease in absorption oscillator strength per carrier with increasing carrier concentration. The range of applicability of the simple model is examined and found to be limited by two factors: disorder-induced localization and many-body interactions occurring and high carrier sheet concentrations (of order of 10$\text{}^{11}$ cm$\text{}^{-2}$).

The zinc sulphide crystals as-grown and heat treated in different atmospheres, have been studied by photoluminescence technique. A blue emission band (IB) peaking at 2.91 eV has been identified in the mentioned crystals. Parameters of the IB band such as peak energy, half width of spectrum, lifetime of photoluminescence as well as a superlinearly excitation intensity dependence of the luminescence have been determined. A model of the IB transition is proposed to explain the properties and features of IB luminescence.

Opis:
In this paper we review results of studies of two types of spatially graded quantum well structures containing various layers of diluted magnetic semiconductors Cd$\text{}_{1-x}$Mn$\text{}_{x}$Te or Cd$\text{}_{1-x-y}$Mn$\text{}_{x}$Mg$\text{}_{y}$Te. The design of the structures has been recently proposed by us and suitable samples have been grown by a modified molecular beam epitaxy method. In the structures of the first type a digital profiling of the composition of the constituent material in the growth direction allowed to produce quantum wells with a specifically required shape of the confining potential (including parabolic, half-parabolic, triangular, and trapezoidal). Such samples were used for (i) determination of the conduction and valence band offsets in MnTe/CdTe and MgTe/CdTe systems, (ii) for the demonstration of an enhanced exciton binding in a parabolic confining potential as well as for (iii) demonstration of the possibility of "spin-splitting engineering" in diluted magnetic semiconductors quantum structures. In the second type of the structures, a precise in-plane profiling of either quantum well width or the barrier width or n-type doping intensity was realized. These structures were subsequently used for studies of the evolution of optical spectra with an increase in the concentration of confined two-dimensional gas of conduction electrons.

ZnO nanostructures doped with a high concentration of Gallium (Ga) were synthesized on a Si substrate by thermal evaporation. Subsequent heat treatments of selected nanostructures was done at 600°C, 700°C, 800°C and 900°C. Scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-Ray diffraction (XRD) and photoluminance (PL) studies was performed after every heat treatment. Systematic scanning electron microscope (SEM) studies suggest significant sublimation at 800°C. XRD results show that crystal quality was improved by annealing and phase separation may occur after high temperatures annealing. Ultraviolet (UV) and visible emission depends strongly on the annealing temperatures and luminescent efficiency of UV emission is enhanced significantly with heat treatment.

Opis:
We review several situations in which the emission rate of a nanostructure is modified by its environment. We first consider small objects embedded in media with different refractive indices. The local electromagnetic field and the rate of spontaneous emission of the nanostructure are enhanced or inhibited by the induced dipole charges on the interface. In quantum wells or nanocrystals embedded in a low dielectric constant medium, the binding energy of excitons is increased. In anisotropic microcrystals, the local field is anisotropic and emission of light is polarized. We consider especially the case of p$\text{}^{+}$-doped porous silicon in which nanocrystals are elongated. Another interesting situation occurs when a dipole is in the vicinity of a dielectric interface. The local field acting on the dipole results from the interferences of incident and reflected beams. Contributions from evanescent waves are important when the dipole is located in the medium of low refractive index, very close to the surface. The intensity of emission and its pattern are modified by the vicinity of the dielectric interface. Close to the interface semiconductor/air, the exciton binding energy is increased. In the vicinity of a metallic surface, a nonradiative transfer to the metal occurs for small distances of the nano-object or quantum well to the surface and the quantum efficiency varies with the distance to the metallic surface. The exciton binding energy of a quantum well is decreased close to a metallic surface.

ZnMgSe mixed crystals were obtained by the high pressure Bridgman method and by thermal diffusion of Mg metal into ZnSe crystals. Measurements of luminescence and transmission spectra show that the band-gap energy of such mixed crystals is larger than that of "pure" ZnSe. ZnMgSe crystals exhibit n-type conductivity and electrical parameters comparable with that of ZnSe. Blue-violet luminescence in the temperature range from 40 K to room temperature was observed. This feature makes this material very promising for future applications in constructing short wavelength electroluminescent devices.

Wire patterns (80-1000 nm) of molecular beam epitaxy grown Cd$\text{}_{0.2}$Zn$\text{}_{0.8}$Se/ZnSe quantum well were fabricated by a CH$\text{}_{4}$/H$\text{}_{2}$ reactive ion etching technique. Photoluminescence emission shows with decreasing lateral size a broadening of line shape and a spectral red shift. Calculations for the change of the band gap due to strain relaxation show that this shift of the photoluminescence emission for narrow Cd$\text{}_{0.2}$Zn$\text{}_{0.8}$Se/ZnSe structures (lattice mismatch of 1.34%) can be explained by a partial elastic strain relaxation of the biaxially compressively strained Cd$\text{}_{0.2}$Zn$\text{}_{0.8}$Se quantum well after the patterning process.
