Opis:
We have used an all-optical photoluminescence-imaging technique to measure excitonic transport in three types of GaAs structures in which the excitonic transitions vary from allowed direct-gap excitons to forbidden, doubly-indirect Type-II excitons. We f nd remarkable differences in the transport properties of these excitons. Our studies show that bulk free-exciton transport exhibits an anomalous laser power-dependent diffusivity, whereas quasi-2D interfacial excitons and Type-II cross-interface excitons do not. Additionally, we observe localization of cross-interface excitons at the potential disorder induced by the heterointerface roughness.

Transient pump-probe reflectance measurements on La$\text{}_{0.67}$Ca$\text{}_{0.33}$MnO$\text{}_{3}$/MgO and La$\text{}_{0.67}$ Ca$\text{}_{0.33}$MnO$\text{}_{3}$/SrTiO$\text{}_{3}$ thin films reveal a hitherto unknown magnetization-dependent energy gap that determines the relaxation process of the optically excited charge carriers on the picosecond time scale. In the case of La$\text{}_{0.67}$Ca$\text{}_{0.33}$MnO$\text{}_{3}$/SrTiO$\text{}_{3}$, the subsequent reflectance dynamics at low temperatures is determined to be substrate-induced strain that drives the sample into a metastable state characterized by an increased number of paramagnetic domains.

After one- and two-colour ps-excitation the transient absorption of rose bengal, erythrosin B and eosin Y in the spectral range from 450 to 670 nm was probed using picosecond continuum pulses generated in H$\text{}_{2}$O-D$\text{}_{2}$O mixture. Our experiments showed for all dyes a high T$\text{}_{1}$-T$\text{}_{n}$ absorption signal above 590 nm where no ground state absorption occurs. These excited triplet states can be effectively populated by a delayed second pump pulse. Their properties with special attention to reverse intersystem crossing processes from T$\text{}_{n}$ to S$\text{}_{x}$ are discussed.

We review studies on the coherent and incoherent exciton dynamics in ZnSe-based quantum wells. First, the exciton-exciton scattering parameter is determined from femtosecond four-wave mixing as a function of background exciton density generated by a prepulse. A linear increase in the excitonic homogeneous linewidth is found as a function of the background exciton density with significant different scattering parameters for the cases of interaction with coherent or incoherent excitons. Second, the thermalization dynamics of spectrally narrow hot-exciton distributions is investigated by time-resolved phonon sideband spectroscopy. Thermalization assisted by acoustic phonons occurs on a 100 ps timescale, which is in good agreement with model calculations in time dependent perturbation theory.

Quantum wires are peculiar in the sense that binary electron-electron collisions cannot thermalize energy distribution of the electrons in the same subband. We show that such thermalization occurs through many-body Coulomb scattering. We consider one-dimensional electron gas described by Newton equations of motion with many-body Coulomb forces. These equations are solved by molecular dynamics technique. Thermalization of the non-equilibrium distribution towards Maxwell function is demonstrated for a single-subband GaAs wire.

In this contribution, we review the development of sources for far-infrared (terahertz) radiation based on laser-generated gas plasmas. We describe several generation mechanisms based on ponderomotive forces, external field screening, and optical second-harmonic biasing. These methods are compared with the standard techniques with respect to the achievable terahertz pulse energy.

We show that at low carrier energies and densities the carriers in a two-dimensional Coulomb gas interact via classical unscreened carrier-carrier collisions. This allows us to calculate exactly the thermalization due to the two-dimensional carrier-carrier collisions in a nonthermal low-density (≈10$\text{}^{10}$ cm$\text{}^{-2}$) two-dimensional plasma excited near the band edge of an undoped GaAs quantum well. The thermalization is found to be 10-15 times slower than the 200 fs thermalization deduced from the previous spectral-hole burning measurements, which means that the spectral hole does not reflect the thermalization process. We also show that the Born approximation fails in describing such carrier-carrier collisions.

We report on high-excitation luminescence spectroscopy in In$\text{}_{x}$Ga$\text{}_{1-x}$N/GaN multiple quantum wells grown by MOCVD over sapphire and bulk GaN substrates. High excitation conditions enabled us to achieve a screening of the built-in field by free carriers. This allowed for the evaluation of the influence of band potential fluctuations due to the variation in In-content on efficiency of spontaneous and stimulated emission. InGaN/GaN multiple quantum wells grown on bulk GaN substrate exhibit a significantly lower stimulated emission threshold and thus enhanced lateral emission. Transient and dynamic properties of luminescence indicate a significant reduction in compositional disorder in homoepitaxially grown structures

Ultrafast excited-state relaxation process has been studied with zinc porphyrin dimers and circular trimer. Following 80 fs excitation at Soret band (420 nm) or Q band (580 nm) of zinc porphyrin, the fluorescence decay curves exhibit ultrafast decays with lifetimes of 80 fs in o-dimer, 450 fs in trimer and 540 fs in m-dimer. The timeresolved fluorescence spectra show that the fast decay process correspond to disappearance of monomer-like emission followed by red-shifted and broaden spectra. These ultrafast processes are assigned as due to excitation transfer among monomers and delocalization of excitation yielding excitonic states.

We report on high-excitation luminescence spectroscopy of In$\text{}_{x}$Ga$\text{}_{1-x}$N/GaN multiple quantum wells with a high indium content (x=0.22÷0.30). High excitation conditions enabled us to achieve screening of built-in field by free carriers. This allowed for the evaluation of the influence of the band potential fluctuations due to variation in In-content on optical properties. Enhanced spontaneous emission was found for x≫0.22 due to carrier localization within the chaotic band potential. Meanwhile the stimulated emission was found to be the highest for structures with x≈ 0.25-0.27. We attribute the In-content dependence of the stimulated emission intensity to a trade-off between an increased carrier density and a decrease in the density of states.

Opis:
Interactions among excitons, trions, and electrons are studied in CdTe modulation-doped quantum wells. These many-body interactions are investigated through the nonlinear dynamical properties in the excitonic complexes using time and spectrally resolved pump and probe techniques. This study is performed as a function of temperature and densities of excitons, trions, and electrons. The results reveal that the nonlinearities induced by trions differ from those induced by excitons and moreover they are mutually correlated. The correlated behavior of excitons and trions manifests itself by crossed trion-exciton effects. We propose that the main source of these correlations is due to the presence of electrons in the quantum well and that its physical origin is the Pauli exclusion-principle. We find that, at 5 K, trions are formed from excitons within 10 ps; at 20 K a thermal equilibrium is reached within 5 ps.
