Opis:
A magnetic field induced coupling is observed between the Landau levels with different quantum number of two GaAs quantum wells separated by a thin (Ga,Al)As tunnel barrier using magneto-photoluminescence-excitation spectroscopy. This coupling cannot be due to a resonance between single particle energy levels, and therefore an explanation is proposed in terms of the Coulomb interaction of magneto-excitons across the thin barrier.

Opis:
Magnetooptic Kerr effect in GaAs/Al$\text{}_{0.312}$Ga$\text{}_{0.688}$As multiple quantum wells was investigated in the integer quantum Hall regime. The measurements have been performed in magnetic fields up to 14.5 T, at the temperature of 1.8 K. Experimental data indicate the discontinuous behavior of the magnetooptic Kerr effect spectrum as a function of the filling factor. For odd filling factor values ν=3 and 5 we observe the large spin splitting. The effects cannot be explained in the one-particle model.

Opis:
A recently proposed magnetooptical method of determination of interface mixing was applied to CdTe/CdMnTe superstructures grown by pulsed laser evaporation and epitaxy. Diffusion length were found ≈ 5 Å for a multiple quantum well and > 15 Å for a superlattice. Ranges of Mn mole fractions and well width values enabling efficient application of the method were determined.

Opis:
A simple model based on the effective-mass method and treating a quantum dot as a small irregularity of the periodic crystal field is developed and used for the description of the radiative recombination of an exciton captured in that quasi-zero-dimensional structure. The additional peaks appearing in the photoluminescence spectra at the critical quantum dot size are predicted as a consequence of the metastable excited states occurring in the energy spectrum of a confined exciton. The obtained dependence of the photoluminescence spectrum on the dot size and magnetic field reproduces well the available experimental results.

Opis:
We report on the results of first measurements of the Faraday rotation of modulated n-doped multiple quantum wells of GaAs/Al$\text{}_{x}$Ga$\text{}_{1-x}$As (x = 0.312). The measurements have been performed in the magnetic fields up to 13 T at the temperature of 2 K, in the spectral region of interband transitions. A rich structure of magneto-excitons has been found in the measured spectra. Faraday rotation (phase) measurements are proposed as an alternative method to photoluminescence excitation for investigations of magneto-excitons in quantum wells. The dependence of the measured Faraday rotation on magnetic field and hypothetical connections with quantum Hall effect are also discussed.

Opis:
Conduction and valence band edges in diluted magnetic semiconductors undergo enormous Zeeman shifts when a magnetic field is applied, reaching values in excess of 100 meV at low temperatures. These Zeeman shifts can thus have profound consequences on the properties of DMS/non-DMS heterostructures, since they provide the opportunity of tuning their band alignment by varying an applied field. This leads to a variety of entirely new effects, and also provides a powerful tool for probing the effect of band alignment on the properties of semiconductor heterostructures in general. We illustrate this with several examples. First, using the ZnSe/ZnMnSe system, we discuss the creation of a spatial spin modulation (spin superlattice). Second, we use the drastic differences in the Zeeman splitting occurring in different layers of a DMS/non-DMS superlattice in order to pinpoint the localization in space of the specific electronic states involved in optical transitions. We illustrate this by investigating the localization of above-barrier states in type-I ZnSe/ZnMnSe superlattices, and of spatially-direct (type-I) excitons which occur in ZnTe/CdMnSe and ZnMnTe/CdSe type-II super-lattices. Finally, we exploit Zeeman tuning to demonstrate the confinement effects which occur in a single quantum barrier.

Opis:
Optical spectra associated with transitions that create or annihilate charged excitons X$\text{}^{-}$ or X$\text{}^{+}$ can be observed in quantum well heterostructures containing an electron gas or a hole gas, respectively. A review is given of properties of trion states in CdTe quantum wells in zero field and of the magnetic field-dependence of the circular polarization and oscillator strength of the trion optical resonance. The possibility that disorder is needed to stabilise trion states in concentrated 2D electron or hole systems is discussed.
