Opis:
It is known that the action of mechanical forces on solids (mechanical activation and/or mechanochemistry) leads to changes of their properties and reactivity. We have studied the physico-chemical and sorption properties of magnetite $Fe_3O_4$ (Kiruna, Sweden) mechanically activated in a planetary mill. Several methods such as X-ray diffractometry, Mössbauer spectroscopy, magnetometry, specific surface area measurement as well as arsenic sorption tests have been applied. By X-ray diffractometry strong amorphisation of magnetite has been evidenced. In parallel, specific surface area increased from 0.1 $m^2//g$ for the reference (non-milled) sample to the values 0.5-6.1 $m^2//g$ for milled samples. The Mössbauer spectrum of the reference sample is well fitted with two subspectra corresponding to tetrahedrally (A) and octahedrally (B) coordinated iron cations in the spinel structure of $Fe_3O_4$. In mechanically activated samples (B)-site subspectrum becomes asymmetric, while (A)-site spectrum remains more or less unchanged. The more covalent character of the Fe(A)-O bond compared to the Fe(B)-O bond can explain qualitatively why the spin-density transfer from (A) to (B) in the spinel structure is more effective than vice versa. The value of the saturation magnetization at room temperature was 67.4 ≈ 43.6 emu/g which is significantly lower than that of the bulk particles 92 emu/g. This reduction may be attributed to the surface disorder or spin canting at the particle surface. During the milling process the coercivity value increases from 150 Oe up to 460 Oe with milling time. This increase can be related to the fact that magnetic anisotropy may increase when particle size decreases. The sorption activity of $Fe_3O_4$ was enhanced as a consequence of its disordering: 88% of $As^{3+}$ was captured for the mechanically activated sample in comparison with 0% for the non-milled one.

Opis:
Changes in magnetic microstructure of Fe₇₈Si₉B₁₃ ribbons were investigated by the Mössbauer spectrometry as a function of their thickness. The latter decreases inversely with the quenching wheel velocity. Amorphicity of the samples was checked by X-ray diffraction and the Mössbauer spectrometry. Average values of hyperfine magnetic fields do not appreciably differ with the production velocity. On the other hand, notable deviations are observed in the position of a net magnetic moment. After annealing with moderate temperature, the magnetic anisotropy improves as indicated by an increase of the average value of hyperfine magnetic field. However, magnetic moments turn out of the ribbon plane and this process continues towards higher production velocity, i.e., smaller thickness of the ribbons. No appreciable deviations in the investigated Mössbauer parameters were revealed after annealing during different time intervals.

Opis:
Microstructure and thermomagnetic properties of ion-bombarded amorphous Fe₇₅Mo₈Cu₁B₁₆ alloy are investigated. The Mössbauer spectroscopy shows that surface regions at the air side of the ribbons irradiated with 2×10¹⁶ ions/cm² were significantly affected by 130 keV N⁺ ions. On the other hand, the opposite (wheel) side that was not exposed to ion irradiation is practically intact. The analysis of temperature dependences of magnetization shows the Curie points of 313 K and 316 K for as-quenched and irradiated samples, respectively. The maximum of magnetic entropy change calculated for the irradiated alloy in a magnetic field of 1.0 T occurs at 312.5 K and equals to 0.77 J kg¯¹ K¯¹ while that of the as-quenched sample is 0.74 J kg¯¹ K¯¹.

Opis:
Mechanical alloying was used to prepare $Co_{40}Fe_{60}$, $Co_{60}Fe_{35}Ni_{5}$, $Co_{40}Fe_{45}Ni_{15}$, and $Co_{40}Fe_{35}Ni_{25}$ alloys from the elemental powders. As X-ray diffraction studies proved the final products of milling were the solid solutions with bcc or fcc lattice and the average grain size between 20 and 50 nm. After heating of the alloys up to 993 K, the mixtures of two solid solutions with bcc and fcc lattices were formed in the case of Co-Fe-Ni alloys. Thermal treatment did not influence the type of the lattice of $Co_{40}Fe_{60}$ alloy. The Mössbauer spectroscopy revealed hyperfine magnetic field distribution ranged from 33 to 38 T for $Co_{40}Fe_{60}$ alloy and from 30 to 37 T for Co-Fe-Ni alloys. In the case of two-phase alloys, distributions were decomposed into two simple Gaussian functions using the numerical fitting. Magnetic measurements allowed to determine the effective magnetic moments and the Curie temperatures of the obtained alloys.

Opis:
Amorphous glass with nominal chemical composition Fe₅₁Co₁₂Si₁₆B₈Mo₅P₈ was studied by combination of the Mössbauer spectroscopy and magnetic measurements in order to characterize magnetic and structural features. Temperature evolution of the Mössbauer spectra revealed presence of broad distribution of hyperfine magnetic field at lower temperatures which vanishes with increase of temperature. The Curie temperature estimated from the Mössbauer spectroscopy experiments is T_{C} ≈ 392 K. This value is in a good agreement with that obtained by magnetic measurements (T_{C}=397 K). The Mössbauer spectroscopy spectra of the sample annealed at 823 K revealed a presence of crystalline components. This temperature is notably lower than the expected temperature of the onset of crystallization observed by differential scanning calorimetry ( ≈ 835 K).

Opis:
Magnetic and structural studies were performed on $Fe_{50}Co_{50}$ material. The samples (disk-shaped, diameter: 10 mm, thickness: 2.5 mm) were fabricated by compaction of powder under pressure of 800 MPa for 5 min at temperatures 300-600°C. The powder was obtained by milling of $Fe_{50}Co_{50}$ alloy swarfs in high-energy planetary mill. The milling time varied from 1 h to 40 h. In the course of milling process the mean size of alloy pieces was decreasing from about 0.5 mm to 0.05 mm (scanning electron microscopy), which provided more compact structure after compression. The annealing process during compaction strongly reduces a coercive field of the samples. Parameters of conversion electron Mössbauer spectra are almost the same for all samples, which points to not significant changes of atomic and magnetic order after milling and compacting.

Opis:
Microstructure and soft magnetic properties of the Fe₈₁Mo₈Cu₁B₁₀ amorphous alloy in the as-quenched state and after irradiation with N⁺ ions are investigated. CEMS spectra show that the irradiated surface at the air side of the ribbons was significantly affected. On the other hand, no noticeable changes were observed at the opposite wheel side. More deep subsurface regions are also not altered as evidenced by CXMS spectra. Thermomagnetic measurements have shown presence of two magnetically different phases with well distinguished Curie points. They can be ascribed to the amorphous matrix and crystalline phases. The latter were quenched-in during the production process and/or induced by ion bombardment. Curie temperatures of the amorphous matrixes were calculated using the Heisenberg model. For the as-quenched and irradiated ribbons they are of 223 K and 228 K, respectively. The behaviour of coercivity versus temperature was also analysed.

$Co_{40}Fe_{50}Ni_{10}$ and $Co_{50}Fe_{45}Ni_{5}$ ternary alloys were prepared by mechanical alloying method. To check the stability of their structure thermal treatment was applied subsequently. As X-ray diffraction studies proved the final products of milling were the solid solutions with bcc lattice and the average grain sizes ranged of tens of nanometers. After heating of the $Co_{50}Fe_{45}Ni_{5}$ alloy up to 993 K the mixture of two solid solutions with bcc and fcc lattices was formed. In other cases thermal treatment did not change the type of the crystalline lattice. Mössbauer spectroscopy revealed hyperfine magnetic field distributions which reflected the different possible atomic surroundings of $\text{}^{57}Fe$ isotopes. Results of the macroscopic magnetic measurements proved that both investigated alloys had relatively good soft magnetic properties.

A new kind of magnetically separable composite consisting initially of magnetite and cerium carbonate nanograins was investigated using magnetic and Mössbauer methods at room and low temperatures. Various stages of calcination treatment in air resulted in a transformation of the cerium carbonate into cerium dioxide and magnetite into more complicated iron oxide compositions. The final CeO₂ nanograins on the surface of α-Fe₂O₃ were obtained after calcination at 973 K.
