Opis:
A recently proposed magnetooptical method of determination of interface mixing was applied to CdTe/CdMnTe superstructures grown by pulsed laser evaporation and epitaxy. Diffusion length were found ≈ 5 Å for a multiple quantum well and > 15 Å for a superlattice. Ranges of Mn mole fractions and well width values enabling efficient application of the method were determined.

Opis:
The photoluminescence and optically detected magnetic resonance studies of Cd$\text{}_{1-x}$Mn$\text{}_{x}$Te (x = 0.095) are presented. The Mn$\text{}^{2+}$ magnetic resonance is detected optically via the changes of "edge" emission induced by the decrease of the Mn spin system magnetization.

The complicated (H,T)-magnetic phase diagram of EuSe is caused by the critical balance between nearest and next nearest neighbour exchange interaction (J$\text{}_{NN}$=0.119 K and J$\text{}_{NNN}$=-0.1209 K) and leads to various spin arrangements NNSS..., NSN..., NNS, NNN... [NS denotes opposite ferromagnetic order in adjacent (111) planes]. Beside the subtle local exchange of 5d-t$\text{}_{2g}$ electrons and localized holes with neighbouring Eu-4f spins, obviously also the strain status influences the occurrence of these different phases. We investigate the magnetic ordering phenomenon in a strained 2.5 μm EuSe film on BaF$\text{}_{2}$ substrate by SQUID magnetometry and magneto-optics like spectral Faraday- and Kerr-effect measurements for temperatures from 2 K up to 200 K and for magnetic fields up to 5 T. The magneto-optical probe monitors the local environment of the photoexcited electron-hole pair, called magnetic exciton, located within a ferromagnetic surrounding (photoinduced magnetic polaron), whereas the integral magnetization measured by SQUID is most sensitive to long-range magnetic ordering. In spite of the dissimilarity of measurement techniques we find an influence of the long-range magnetic order (e.g. of the NNS- or NNN-matrix) on the non-resonant Kerr reflection. The complementarity of SQUID and magneto-optical methods is stringent only in the (resonant) spectral regime, where magnetic polarons are formed.

Opis:
A simple and convenient model is proposed to elucidate the optical characteristics of Cd$\text{}_{1-x}$Mn$\text{}_{x}$Te crystals using experimental data on light reflection in magnetic field. The model is based on the quasi-oscillator concept accounting both for the exciton and fundamental absorption edge contributions. The energy dependencies of refraction index and absorption coefficient are presented for Mn mole fraction x=20% at the magnetic field values up to 5 T.

Opis:
Optical pump-and-probe experiments performed at the nanosecond timescale on Cd$\text{}_{1-x}$Mn$\text{}_{x}$Te are reviewed. Recent studies have established that for low excitation densities thermo-magnetic modulations of the reflectivity prevail against other possible modulations. Hence the relaxation time of the signal directly reflects the spin relaxation of the Mn ions. Detailed studies of the modulation mechanisms give the opportunity to investigate some fundamental magneto-optical properties of the diluted magnetic semiconductors, otherwise beyond reach, such as the paramagnetic shift of the gap in the dilute regime.

Opis:
Magnetooptical properties of (Ga,Fe)N layers containing various concentrations of Fe-rich nanocrystals embedded in paramagnetic (Ga,Fe)N layers are reported. Previous studies of such samples demonstrated that magnetization consists of a paramagnetic contribution due to substitutional diluted Fe ions as well as of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic components originating from Fe-rich nanocrystals, whose relative abundance can be controlled by the growth conditions. The nanocrystals are found to broaden and to reduce the magnitude of the excitonic features. However, the ferromagnetic contribution, clearly seen in SQUID magnetometry, is not revealed by magnetic circular dichroism. Possible reasons for differences in magnetic response determined by magnetic circular dichroism and SQUID measurements are discussed.

Opis:
We present a theoretical description of the excitonic giant Zeeman effect observed in wide gap diluted magnetic semiconductors (Zn,Co)O and (Ga,Mn)N. In these materials, A and B excitons present quite complex energy shifts and change of oscillator strengths under magnetic field. These features can be well reproduced using an excitonic Hamiltonian, taking into account ion-carrier exchange, wurtzite trigonal crystal field, spin-orbit and electron-hole exchange interactions.

This paper contains a description and explanation of selected basic phenomena characteristic of bulk semimagnetic semiconductors: giant Faraday rotation and giant Zeeman splitting, mean field approximation and its limitations, ion-ion interaction, its measurements and its influence on magnetic properties, etc. The basic part is followed by a discussion of a personal choice of new perspectives open by the introduction of diluted magnetic semiconductors in semiconductor quantum structures. In particular, the role of magnetic ions in characterization of semiconductor quantum structures and low-dimensional excitonic systems is analyzed. Particular attention is paid to magnetooptical phenomena and magnetooptical experimental methods in large gap II-VI semimagnetic semiconductors.

During recent years diluted magnetic semiconductors based on III-V compounds have been of considerable interest. In this respect we review the basic properties of these materials, which are nearly exclusively Mn-based systems, such as GaMnAs, InMnAs, GaMnSb, and GaN:Mn. We discuss the nature of Mn impurity. Different Mn centers are considered and experimental pieces of evidence suggesting the dominating role of Mn (d$\text{}^{5}$) configuration are given. Then we analyze s, p-d exchange, together with resulting magnetooptical properties (in particular absorption edge slitting for heavily p-type GaMnAs). The coupling between Mn ions (d-d exchange) and ferromagnetic ordering observed in InMnAs and GaMnAs is the next subject. Some mechanisms responsible for this ordering are presented. Finally we discuss transport properties and some selected problems of quantum structures based on III-V diluted magnetic semiconductors.

This article gives an overview of the use of X-ray absorption spectroscopy to characterize the magnetic properties for technologically important, low dimensional magnetic materials. An overview is given both for the experimental hardware, the measurements and the analysis of the spectra. The information obtained is discussed for metallic and semiconducting systems, using both the X-ray magnetic circular dichroism and the X-ray linear magnetic dichroism spectroscopy.

Effect of misfit strain in the layers of (Ga,Mn)(Bi,As) quaternary diluted magnetic semiconductor, epitaxially grown on either GaAs substrate or (In,Ga)As buffer, on their magnetic and magneto-transport properties has been investigated. High-resolution X-ray diffraction, applied to characterize the structural quality and misfit strain in the layers, proved that the layers were fully strained to the GaAs substrate or (In,Ga)As buffer under compressive or tensile strain, respectively. Ferromagnetic Curie temperature and magneto-crystalline anisotropy of the layers have been examined by using magneto-optical Kerr effect magnetometry and low-temperature magneto-transport measurements. Post-growth annealing treatment of the layers has been shown to enhance the hole concentration and the Curie temperature in the layers.

Opis:
The light emitting devices based on the $p-Zn_{1-x}Mn_{x}Te$ bicrystals have been fabricated. The $Zn_{1-x}Mn_{x}Te$ devices produce red and green emission originating from the internal d-shell transitions in the $Mn^{2+}$ ions and the donor-acceptor pairs recombination, respectively. A critical behavior of the magnetic field dependence of the green emission intensity and a positive magnetoresistance near the Curie-Weiss temperature in the $Zn_{1-x}Mn_{x}Te$ devices was observed.
